Important Safety Instructions
1. Read and follow all warning notices and instructions marked on the product or
included in the manual.
2. This product is intended to be used with a three-wire grounding type plug - a plug
which has a grounding pin. This is a safety feature. Equipment grounding is vital to
ensure safe operation. Do not defeat the purpose of the grounding type plug by
modifying the plug or using an adaptor.
Prior to installation, use an outlet tester or a voltmeter to check the ac receptacle for
the presence of earth ground. If the receptacle is not properly grounded, the
installation must not continue until a qualified electrician has corrected the problem.
If a three-wire grounding type power source is not available, consult a qualified
electrician to determine another method of grounding the equipment.
3. Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation. To ensure reliable
operation of the product and to protect it from overheating, these slots and openings
must not be blocked or covered.
4. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord and do not locate the product where
persons will walk on the power cord.
5. Do not attempt to service this product yourself, as opening or removing covers may
expose you to dangerous high voltage points or other risks. Refer all servicing to
qualified service personnel.
6. General purpose cables are provided with this product. Special cables, which may be
required by the regulatory inspection authority for the installation site, are the
responsibility of the customer.
7. When installed in the final configuration, the product must comply with the applicable
Safety Standards and regulatory requirements of the country in which it is installed. If
necessary, consult with the appropriate regulatory agencies and inspection
authorities to ensure compliance.
8. A rare phenomenon can create a voltage potential between the earth grounds of two
or more buildings. If products installed in separate buildings are interconnected, the
voltage potential may cause a hazardous condition. Consult a qualified electrical
consultant to determine whether or not this phenomenon exists and, if necessary,
implement corrective action prior to interconnecting the products.
In addition, if the equipment is to be used with telecommunications circuits, take the
following precautions:
– Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
– Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed
for wet locations.
– Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has
been disconnected at the network interface.
– Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
– Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm.
There may be a remote risk of electric shock from lightning.
– Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.

This manual provides the information needed to enable a user to configure and manage the
following multiplexers for use in the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System
(NMS):
• ACCULINK 731/740/741/742 multiplexers
• ACCULINK 745 multiplexers
• ACCULINK 764 multiplexers
• DATAPHONE II 719/72x NETWORKER
• DATAPHONE II 724/735 multiplexers
How to Use this Manual
Chapter 1. Managing Multiplexers provides an overview of the products and features supported
and the information necessary to manage a multiplexer network with the 6800 Series NMS.
Chapter 2. Configuring Multiplexers discusses the procedures for configuring multiplexer
networks managed by the 6800 Series NMS.
Documentation Conventions
The following conventions are used throughout this document.
Typeface
This typeface indicates a choice of options that can be entered. The 6800 Series NMS commands
are always shown in italics within parentheses. For example, the Change Node Configuration
Parameters command is shown as (chncp).

Overview
The 6800 Series Network Management System (NMS) supports the AT&T Series 700
Multiplexers. These multiplexers include the following types:
• DATAPHONE II 719/72x NETWORKER
• DATAPHONE II 724/735 Multiplexers
• 731/740/741/742 ACCULINK Multiplexers
• 745 ACCULINK Multiplexer
• 764 ACCULINK Multiplexer
In this document the 764 multiplexer is referred to as a 74x-56K multiplexer.
The NMS provides only partial support for the 74x-56K multiplexer and for 740 and
745 multiplexers with feature packages 3.5.1 and 4.2.1, respectively, and later. Some
multiplexer commands must be executed via External Systems cut-through.
NOTE
The 6800 Series NMS does not provide command support for the
719/72x NETWORKER, or the 724/735 multiplexers. Access to
diagnostics and configuration commands for these products from
the 6800 Series NMS is via External System cut-through to their
terminal interfaces.
NMS Ports Used by Multiplexers
Before the hardware connections between the NMS host computer and the ACCULINK network
are completed, you must configure the ports on one or more of these local multiplexers to send and
receive specific information about all the multiplexers in the network. This configuration process
is performed from a series of multiplexer software menus accessed via a terminal or a personal
computer (PC) that you temporarily connect to the multiplexer.
The 6800 Series NMS communicates with the multiplexers via user-configurable port connections
on the NMS. These port connections are used for the event port, the command port, and the
external systems ports. The following three ports are used to communicate with AT&T Series 700
Multiplexers.
Event Port
An event port establishes communications between the NMS host and either an
ACCULINK multiplexer or a 719 NETWORKER. This is a one-way communication link
that allows event/alarm information to be sent to the NMS host from the nodes.
Command Port
This is a two-way communications port used to send commands to the multiplexer
network and to receive results coming back into the NMS. A command port establishes
communications between the NMS host and the ACCULINK network.

External Systems Port
This port is used for initiating cut-through sessions for user interaction from a window on
an NMS workstation to a multiplexer node’s terminal interface. It provides access to the
multiplexer menus via the 6800 Series NMS External Systems task. The external systems
port is a two-way communication link between the NMS host and either an ACCULINK
multiplexer or a 719 NETWORKER. A 724/735 multiplexer must be connected to a
719 NETWORKER to communicate with the NMS in this fashion.
All ACCULINK Series 700 nodes have two network administration ports (NAPs) which are
RS-232 ports that provide control access to the Series 700 network. A NAP can be configured to
interface with any ASCII terminal, printer, the 6800 Series NMS, or with another node’s NAP to
establish an alternate SDL.
While the NMS host processor has three ports for communicating with the multiplexers,
ACCULINK multiplexers have only two ports for communicating with NMS; the 724/735
multiplexers have just one port. Therefore, you can either use two ports for communicating with
NMS or connect to a 719 NETWORKER which offers three ports. Alternatively, you can use two
or three nodes for the ports since all three ports do not need to be on the same node.
In addition to configuring the port(s) on the 719 NETWORKER and the 74x multiplexers to
communicate with the three NMS ports, you may also need to configure one of the following
ports:
• An event log printer (ELP) port between a printer and either a 74x multiplexer or a
719 NETWORKER if a real-time paper copy of network events/alarms is required. This is a
one-way communication link that sends the event/alarm data to the printer from the network
nodes.
• A supervisory data link (SDL) port between the 719 NETWORKER and a 74x multiplexer
if these multiplexers are used together in the network. This is a two-way communication
link that sends network control data, such as event information, from one node in the
network to another.
The 6800 Series NMS completely manages an ACCULINK multiplexer network. Support for these
devices includes network tests and commands and alarm and event integration.
In addition, the 6800 Series NMS provides alarm and event integration for the DATAPHONE II
Series 700 Model 719 NETWORKER. The NMS does not provide test or command support for
these devices.
All of the above devices can also be accessed from the 6800 Series NMS workstations via a
cut-through session to the multiplexer terminal interface.
Figure 1-1 is a sample NMS multiplexer network diagram.

Each multiplexer node that NMS supports is identified by a unique node number (1 to 249). A
node is a multiplexer with integrated packet-switching software. The multiplexers included in this
class are the 731/74x, 74x-56K, and the 719.
When a device profile is created or edited for a command-supported node, the NMS sends a
command to the network to obtain the node’s model number, version number (feature package) and
product type (series 700 for the chassis and CPU types listed below). If the data and node are
accessible to the NMS, the NMS will populate the model number, version number and product
type fields as shown in Table 1-1.
In Table 1-1, Chassis is the chassis type of the multiplexer; CPU is the type of CPU software
loaded; Aggregate Interface is the speed of the aggregate or physical link; Device Type is the
NMS device type used for this combination; and Model Number is the model number used in the
NMS device profile for this combination.

The terms Link, Logical Link and Supervisory Data Link are used throughout this manual as
follows:
• A link is a generic term used to describe the termination of a facility (the digital path
between nodes) at a node. When a facility terminates at a 731/740/741/742 or 74x-56K
multiplexer, the link is called an aggregate link. When the facility terminates at a 745
multiplexer, it is a T1 link.
• A logical link is a term used to describe the logical assignment of time slots between two
nodes through an intervening network of foreign cross-connect devices.
• Supervisory Data Links (SDLs) are the connections that are used to pass network control
data between nodes.
Multiplexer Access Security
Access to the multiplexers in the network is achieved via user access security in the NMS and can
also be set up via Level I, II, and III password security within the multiplexer network when you
directly access a node from NMS using the External Systems task.
NMS Access Security for Multiplexers
Access security in the NMS to the network is achieved by regulating each user’s access to network
devices and to NMS commands.
User access levels are assigned or modified using the Create User Profile (crup) or Edit User
Profile (edup) commands, respectively, from the Manager task.
Multiplexer Security through the NMS External Systems Interface
The ACCULINK multiplexers in the network have their own built-in security system that uses
three tiers of passwords: Level I, Level II, and Level III. These password levels basically
correspond respectively to the command access levels — Manager, Data Technician, and Help
Desk.
The NMS internally uses the Level I password to communicate with the multiplexers. Therefore,
all of the multiplexers in the network must be configured with the same password for Level I. If
you change the Level I password of the nodes in the network, you must inform the NMS by
executing the Change Node Passwords (chnp) command. The Level I password should be known
only by the System Administrator and other personnel who require complete access to the
ACCULINK multiplexer network.
When you access a node via the NMS External Systems task, you are required to enter a password.
To restrict users from access, you can configure the multiplexer with Level II and Level III
passwords and inform the appropriate users of the passwords. You may only configure multiplexer
Level I, II, and III passwords through the terminal interface or the NMS External Systems
interface.
For more information on multiplexer security, refer to the user’s manual that came with your
multiplexer.

Multiplexer Profile Database Information
The 6800 Series NMS device, site, facility and vendor profiles are used to store information
relevant to specific multiplexer nodes and facilities. The profiles are created, respectively, using
the Create Device Profile (crdp), Create Site Profile (crsp), Create Facility Profile (crfp) and
Create Vendor Profile (crvp) commands.
These profiles are discussed in the COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System
User’s/System Administrator’s Guide, and the commands are described in greater detail in the
COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System Core Command Reference Manual. The
profiles need to contain specific data in them for multiplexer support. The following sections
identify the required fields that must be completed for multiplexers in the profile database.
Device Profile Information for Multiplexers
Device profile data maintains synchronization with internal multiplexer node connectivity data and
channel group tables according to the following guidelines.
• You are not permitted to delete a device profile for a multiplexer node if the current channel
group tables indicate that a channel group is configured with a fixed route that contains the
node requested for deletion. This also applies for the endpoint nodes of automatic routes. If
you attempt to delete a profile, the NMS returns a message indicating that channel groups
passing through the node must be deleted before the profile can be deleted.
• Successfully adding, deleting, and editing device profiles causes NMS to appropriately
update its poll list for multiplexer nodes.
• NMS does not allow device profiles to be deleted if the device has active alerts, opened or
closed trouble tickets, or associated facility profiles.
Specific device profile fields are required by NMS for Series 700 multiplexers. If the device exists,
the NMS automatically retrieves model numbers and software versions for the device profile when
you execute the Create Device Profile (crdp) or Edit Device Profile (eddp) command for that node.
Here is a list of possibilities:
• If the model/version is known to NMS, the fields are automatically completed in the profile.
• If the model/version is unknown to NMS, the fields remain unchanged.
• If a node is not available, a warning box appears indicating no response was received from
the node. You can still enter the model/version manually by using either the Create Device
Profile (crdp) command or the Edit Device Profile (eddp) command.
The COMSPHERE 6800 Series Network Management System Core Command Reference Manual
provides the detailed information needed for these required fields on the Create Device Profile
input form. The required fields in the device profile record for each multiplexer are briefly
identified here.
Inventory State
This field indicates if the multiplexer node is being used in the network. The inventory
state of the mux can be active, on order, stock, repair, or removed.

NMS Support
This field indicates if the multiplexer is managed (supported or unsupported) by NMS.
All ACCULINK multiplexers, DATAPHONE 724/735 multiplexers, and the
719 NETWORKER can be supported, so the NMS can receive alerts from the nodes
and/or send tests and commands to them. DATAPHONE 718 multiplexers must be
unsupported since they do not have a network management interface.
Device Type
This field identifies the type or class of the multiplexer as follows: For 719/72x
NETWORKERs, the device type is ntwk, for 724/735 multiplexers, the device type is
mux, for 731/740/741/742 multiplexers the device type is mux, for 74x-56K multiplexers
NOTE
Throughout this chapter, references to 740 multiplexers always
imply the 741 and 742 multiplexer also unless explicitly stated
otherwise. References to 74x-56K multiplexers always imply both
the 742 chassis and the 740 chassis unless explicitly stated
otherwise.
Model Number
The model number of the node as identified by NMS. The NMS model numbers identify
the type of chassis — NMS version numbers can identify the type of CPU as well as the
version of software in the CPU. See Table 1-1.
Version Number
The feature package number of the device.
Device Address
This field uniquely represents the diagnostic location of the multiplexer. This is a required
field for any ACCULINK Series 700 multiplexer with a supported inventory state. The
address is given in the form m2/node# where node# is the multiplexer node (1 to 249)
number (or m2/N/.C/M or m2/N/.C/S for 735 nodes). Refer to the COMSPHERE
6800 Series Network Management System User’s/System Administrator’s Guide for
complete information on device addressing.
