Symbols and Conventions
The Avid hardware documentation uses the following special symbols
and conventions:
1. Numbered lists, when order is important.
a. Alphabetical lists, when the order of secondary items is
important.
Bulleted lists, when the order of the items is unimportant.
- Indented dashed lists, when the order of subtopics is unim-
portant.
Look here in the margin
for tips.
In the margin you will find tips that help you perform tasks more eas-
ily and efficiently.
n
A note provides important related information, reminders, recommendations,
and strong suggestions.
c
A caution means that a specific action you take could cause harm to
your computer or cause you to lose data.
w
A warning describes an action that could cause you physical harm.
Follow the guidelines in this guide or on the unit itself when han-
dling electrical equipment.

If You Need Help
If You Need Help
If you are having trouble using your system, you should:
1. Retry the action, carefully following the instructions given for that
task in this guide.
2. Check the documentation that came with your hardware for main-
tenance or hardware-related issues.
3. Check the Customer Service and News + Publications sections of

CHAPTER 1
Avid Media Composer
Products Site Preparation
This guide provides information about preparing your site for the
installation of Avid Media Composer products hardware for
Release 8.0. By following these site preparation guidelines, you can
help ensure a successful installation and avoid delays in getting your
system up and running.
This guide contains the following sections:
Site Planning (including environmental, electrical, size, and
weight considerations)
System Planning
Preparing a Network
Check List (a list of tasks pertinent to your setup)
This guide assumes you are installing an Avid system with a Power
Macintosh® G3 platform and an Avid PCI Extender. The guide covers
the preparation required for installing the Avid Media Composer or
Avid Xpress™ system.
2
Avid Media Composer Products Site Preparation
Site Planning
You need to be aware of environmental, electrical, size, and weight
requirements as you choose the location for your system.
Be sure to meet the narrowest range of specifications in the following
tables. For example, the Avid iS MediaDrive can operate in an environ-
ment of 32°F to 120°F (0°C to 49°C), but the digital linear tape (DLT)
drive should only operate in an environment of 50°F to 104°F (10°C to
40°C). Therefore, the temperature at your site should not drop below
50°F (10°C) or rise above 104°F (40°C).
Environmental Requirements
In general, you should prepare a site that is clean and dust free. In
addition:
Choose a location free from significant temperature or humidity
changes. A location with approximately 40 percent humidity can
prevent problems stemming from electrostatic discharge.
Make sure your location is sturdy, level, and not subject to
vibration.
Make sure the location is away from high-traffic or high-noise
areas.
Choose a location where there is adequate space in front of and
behind the system components. You must be able to connect
cables and service the parts of your system; they also need ade-
quate airflow for cooling.
You should also make sure the site meets the specifications in Table 1.
It shows the environmental requirements for the major components of
the system.

Electrical Requirements
Choose your site with these electrical requirements in mind:
Make sure there is adequate power for each system component.
This prevents the need for extension cords.
Make sure your site is away from major electrical equipment such
as motors, air conditioners, or elevators.
Make sure the location is not subject to static electrical buildup.
Make sure you manually select the proper voltage range for the
Power Macintosh G3 platform if needed. See the Avid Media
Composer Products Setup Guide for Release 8.0 for further informa-
tion regarding voltage selection.
Plug only your Avid equipment into the power strip. Do not plug
in coffee makers, radios, lights, or other non-Avid devices. Avid
recommends the use of an uninterruptable power supply (UPS)
appropriately sized for your system configuration.

System Planning
This section discusses your system setup. It presents information on
clearance and the access you need to install and service your system. It
also discusses system components and physical layout.
Clearance and Access
Install the system in a location that provides at least 12 inches
(30.5 cm) of air clearance in front of and behind the system. Maintain 1
to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of clearance between components. Remem-
ber to provide additional space for connecting or disconnecting cables
and changing internal drives, boards, and components. Allow 3 feet
(0.9 meters) all around the system for servicing.
Place your system on recessed shelves or cabinets with rollers so you
can pull out and access the components easily. Avoid installing the
system in tight, fixed spaces.
You should also provide telephone line access for modem use and
technical support.
