Detector JA105 is a detector of metal masses which, by changing the state of an electrical contact, signals the presence
of a vehicle on an area defined by a loop.
The system's operating sensitivity can be adjusted to any vehicle and to different loops and power supply lines.

2. INSTALLATION OF THE LOOP
ATTENTION: Optimal operation of the detector depends to a great extent on correct configuration of the magnetic
loop.
2.1. CHOICE OF ELECTRIC CABLE
The loop consists of a preferably continuous electric cable, placed in a groove made in the floor.
If installing in places still without any flooring, a standard electric cable with a cross-section of 1.5 mm
2
and a PVC sheath,
can be used.
If a protective sheath is not used, we recommend the use of high temperature resistant cables to allow the loop to be
sealed with quick setting black epoxy resin or hot bitumen cement. Here are some examples of these cables:
Butyl cable, double Teflon insulation
Cable with Teflon insulation
Cable with reinforced polyethylene insulation, 1.5 mm
2
Pirelli FA 8544 cable
Ceat HO7RNF cable
Ceat UG5R/0.6 1kV cable
2.2. GEOMETRY OF DETECTION LOOP
Unless operating under severe conditions, the detection loops must be rectangular and be installed with their longest
sides perpendicular with respect to direction of traffic (Fig.1).
Ideal distance between the sides: 1 metre.
The length of the loop depends on the transit area to be controlled. The loop should reach to at least 30 cm from every
access side (Fig.1).
Loop length must not be less than one metre and not more than 25 metres.
In the case of triangular shapes (e.g.: application for swing leaves), sensitivity drops especially on corners (Fig.2).
2.3. HOW TO MAKE THE GROOVE
NB.: You cannot connect more than one loop to a single DETECTOR
1) Using a piece of chalk, mark the shape of the loop on the floor and - at an angle from the loop - mark the raceway
of the power supply line, bearing in mind the following:
the minimum distance between the loop and any fixed metal mass must be at least 15 cm;
the minimum distance between the loop and any moving metal mass (e.g.: gate leaves) must be at least one
metre;
the length of the power line supplying the loop must be less than 100 metres.
2) Make the groove with an asphalt-standard circular saw, observing the dimensions in fig.3.
NB.: To avoid damaging the cable at the corners, make 45° cross-cuts (Fig.1-2).

2.4. LAYING THE ELECTRICAL CABLE
1) Calculate the length of the loop cable, bearing in mind the following elements:
a) the number of the loop's windings depends on the loop's perimeter according to the criteria in Table 1.
b) Presence of reinforcements under the road surface reduces the loop's efficiency - the loop must therefore be
increased by two windings.
c) the loop and power line must consist of a single continuous conductor cable. If interruptions to the loop and
power line cannot be avoided, the relevant connections must be welded and
placed in a hermetically sealed enclosure.
d) The two loop power cables must be braided to each other a minimum of 20 times per meter of length to avoid
reductions of sensitivity.
TABLE 1.
LOOP PERIMETER NUMBER OF WINDINGS
Over 10 metres
from 10 to 6 metres
less than 6 metres
2
3
4
2) Position the cable in the power line raceway, leaving an end bit to be used for reaching the detector.
3) Make the necessary windings in the loop groove and once again lay the cable in the power line raceway, braiding
it with the cable already there.
NB.: if the loop power line cables are laid together with other electric cables, they must be adequately shielded. The
shield must be earthed on the detector side only.
4) Carefully secure the cable inside the groove and seal the loop, making sure that no part of the cable remains
exposed (Fig.4).
3. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
The detector is supplied with a rapid connector complete with connecting wires.
The pins and the relevant wires are described in Fig. 5.
NB.: the detector can be used simultaneously as a pulse generator and as a safety device, by making both the
connections.
PINS 1 – 2 N.C. PRESENCE CONTACT
A N.C. contact is available between pin 1 (white wire) and 2 (pink wire), and is activated when the detector detects the
presence of a metal mass on the loop.
It is usually employed as a safety device.
Contact capacity is 1A at 230 Vac, and the contact makes it possible to command any additional services which are
disabled while the loop is engaged.
PINS 1 – 3 N.O. PRESENCE CONTACT
A N.O. contact is available between pin 1 (white wire) and 3 (yellow wire), and is activated when the detector detects
the presence of a metal mass on the loop.
Contact capacity is 1A at 230 Vac, and the contact makes it possible to command any additional services which are
enabled while the loop is engaged.
PINS 4 – 5 N.O. PULSED CONTACT
Two different pulse activation times can be selected - the times are available on pin 4 (grey) and 5 (grey):
when the magnetic loop is engaged;
when the magnetic loop is released.
It is usually employed as a pulse generator.
The contact's automatic state-hold time is 250 msec.
PINS 6 – 8 RESET PUSH-BUTTON
We advise you to connect a N.O. RESET push-button between pin 6 (orange wire) and pin 8 (black wire) to be pressed in
the following cases:
new setting of the system;
new programming of the system;
system-restore following an operational fault.
PINS 7 – 8 DECODER POWER SUPPLY
Pin 7 (black wire), -24Vdc, and pin 8 (red wire), +24 Vdc, should be connected to the terminal for externally powering the
24 Vdc accessories of any control equipment.
NB.: observe polarity.
PINS 9 – 10 LOOP POWER SUPPLY
Pins 9 and 10 (purple wires) should be connected to the loop power line.
Make the connection between the wires by welding and insulate them with self-bonding tape or a compression sheath.
9
4. PROGRAMMING MICROSWITCHES
NB.: You must press the RESET push-button after every programming job.
SW1 – SW2 FREQUENCY
This depends on loop dimensions. Frequency microswitches generate one variation only.
To avoid interference between closely positioned detectors, you should set different frequencies.
In general, the detector connected to the loop with the higher inductance (the larger one with more windings) must be
set to the lower frequency, and vice versa.
SW3 – SW4 SENSITIVITY
This function is for selecting users, i.e. denying access to motorcycles and small vehicles.
SW5 BOOST
This function enables an increase in sensitivity level at detection. When the vehicle moves away from the loop, sensitivity
returns to the selected level. This system makes it possible to maintain the detection contact even for very high vehicles
or when a tractor with trailer passes through.
SW6 FILTER
This is used to prevent rapid transits of metal masses on the loop (e.g.: manoeuvring cars).
If this function is activated when the loop is occupied by a vehicle, the response time is delayed by two seconds.
SW7 PULSE ACTIVATION
Two different pulse activation times can be selected:
when the magnetic loop is engaged;
when the magnetic loop is released.
SW8 PRESENCE TIME
To prevent permanent accidental presence of vehicles from disabling the system, by selecting a LIMITED presence time,
the system resets automatically to the new inductive state and, therefore, returns the contact to its initial state.
The presence time of the vehicle enabling the new setting cannot be quantified exactly, because it is closely linked to all
the system's parameters (inductance, sensitivity and frequency). If the above parameters are at average values, the
vehicle presence time causing the new setting is about one hour.
If a PERMANENT presence time is selected, this activates the detection contact unlimitedly for the vehicle's entire
presence time on the loop.
5. SETTING OPERATION
Detector setting is fully automatic when it is powered up.
The detector performs the setting automatically according to the inductance value of any detection loop in the range
from 20 to 1500 microhenry.
While this operation is taking place, there should not be any metal masses on the loop surface.
Any loop inductance variations are, however, compensated by the detector, which automatically sets itself to the new
state.
In any event, you can always press RESET to command a new automatic setting operation.
