This quick installation guide explains how to install the
LSIiTBBU03 Intelligent Transportable BBU on the MegaRAID
SAS 8888ELP RAID controller.
The iTBBU03 is an intelligent, transportable battery backup
unit that protects the integrity of the cached data on the
MegaRAID controller for up to 72 hours in the event of a
complete AC power failure or a brief power outage. The
iTBBU03 connects directly to the SAS 8888ELP RAID
controller in the MiniDIMM socket.
LSI Logic provides a family of MegaRAID intelligent
transportable battery backup units (iTBBUs) for use with its
high-performance MegaRAID RAID controllers. The
MegaRAID iTBBUs provide an inexpensive alternative to
using an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a second
level of fault tolerance when used in conjunction with a UPS.
Note: See the MegaRAID 1078 Battery Backup Unit
User’s Guide for detailed information about this
battery.
Figure 1 shows the top view and the bottom view of the
iTBBU03. (The “top” side is the side you can see after you
install the iTBBU03 on the motherboard or server chassis.)

Note: The only functional difference between the iBBU
and the iTBBU is that the battery unit is
integrated into the cache DIMM itself on the
iTBBU. This integration enables you to transfer
the DIMM assembly from a faulty RAID controller
to a new RAID controller and to fully recover
unwritten cache data.
Installing the iTBBU03 on the SAS
8888ELP RAID Controller
Follow these steps to install the iTBBU03 on the MegaRAID
SAS 8888ELP RAID controller. The battery is installed on
the top of the controller.
Step 1 Ground yourself, and remove the iTBBU03 and
the daughtercard from the package.
Step 2 Insert the J1 battery pack harness connector at
the end of the colored wires into the 5-pin
connector in the opening in the corner of the
iTBBU03.
Step 3 With the front side up, place the iTBBU03 front-
side-up on a flat, clean, static-free surface.
Step 4 With the front side up, place the MegaRAID SAS
8888ELP RAID controller on a flat, clean, static-
free surface.
Step 5 Mount the iTBBU03 in the MiniDIMM memory
socket on the RAID controller as you would a
standard DIMM, as shown in Figure 2.
Electrostatic discharge can damage the iTBBU03
and the MegaRAID SAS RAID controller. Make
sure that you install the iTBBU03 at an ESD-safe
workstation that meets the requirements of EIA-
625 – “Requirements For Handling Electrostatic
Discharge Sensitive Devices.” When you install
the iTBBU03, follow the ESD-recommended
practices in the latest revision of IPC-A-610.
The iTBBU03 and the integrated charging
circuitry were specifically designed for Li-Ion
Polymer battery cells. Attempts to self service or
replace any original component could result in an
explosion or a fire. Please dispose of used
batteries in accordance with local laws.

The memory socket is mounted flush with the
RAID controller. The iTBBU03 is parallel to the
RAID controller when properly installed.

Socket on the MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP
RAID Controller
Step 6 Press the iTBBU03 firmly into the memory
socket.
As you press the iTBBU03 into the socket, it
clicks into place when it is properly seated in the
socket. The arms on the sides of the socket
rotate into the notches on the sides of the
iTBBU03 to hold it securely in place.
Step 7 Install the MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP RAID
controller in the computer, as shown in Figure 3.
Press down gently, but firmly, to ensure that the
RAID controller is properly seated in the slot. The
bottom edge of the RAID controller must be flush
with the slot.
Caution: Never apply pressure to the LSIiTBBU03 or to the
DIMM when inserting the SAS 8888ELP RAID
controller. Instead, press down only on the top
edge of the RAID controller, as shown in Figure 3.

RAID Controller
Step 8 Attach the RAID controller to the computer
chassis with the bracket screw.
Step 9 Attach the cables, as needed, to the connectors
on the RAID controller.
Step 10 Replace the computer cover, and reattach the
power cord(s).
