Features
General
The ONKYO Digital Surround processor ED-301 is a product that fills
your home with the excitement of Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround
soundtracks by using up to six loudspeakers including a subwoofer,
generating sound fields optimized for your room.
The ED-301 also features the Cinema Re-EQ circuit for the reproduc-
tion of cinema soundtracks at home, the Midnight Theater function for
low sound volume playing late at night, and the LFE (Low Frequency
Effects) function for comfortable bass range reproduction.
What's Dolby Digital?
Dolby Digital is a new-generation digital audio format for multi-
channel surround audio.
Adding to conventional five full range channels, Dolby Digital supports
one LFE (Low Frequency Effects) channel, which is used solely for
correcting the bass range through an independent subwoofer. Dolby
Digital is sometimes referred to as 5.1-channel format since this LFE
channel is calculated as 0.1.
This fully discrete 5.1-channel Dolby Digital format can deliver sound
of wide and dynamic range, reproducing theater-like sound fields in
your room.
Features
Dolby* Digital and Dolby Pro Logic decoding
The ED-301 can decode both 5.1-channel sounds from software
having Dolby Digital encoded soundtracks such as DVDs and
Dolby Pro Logic format stereo media such as LDs, video cassette
tapes and satellite broadcasts.
5.1-channel input
The ED-301 can receive multi-channel (analog) signals directly
from other format (DTS, MPEG Multichannel, etc.) decoders and
output to amplifiers.
Two types of 5.1-channel audio output
5.1-channel signals can be output in two ways. You can use either the
independent multi-channel audio output jacks (RCA type) or the DB-
25 connector compatible with ONKYO TX-SV919THX/TX-
SV828THX Surround Receiver.
Motorola 24-bit DSP (56009)
The ED-301 incorporates the latest technology Motorola DSP chip
as the Dolby Digital decoder.
Two lines of input each for digital and analog connection
The ED-301 has two digital input terminals, one for connection
using a coaxial cable and the other for connection using an optical
cable. It also features dual audio (analog) and video input lines, so
you can select from two input modes.
Cinema Re-EQ** circuit
Re-Equalization takes the edginess or "brighteness" out of your
home cinema sound, compensating for the fact that sound mixed for
theaters will sound too bright when played back through speakers
in the home environment.
Midnight Theater function
This function is provided for playing at night. It narrows the
dynamic range to reproduce comfortable sound at low volumes.
LFE (Low Frequency Effects) function
This function reduces overemphasized bass sound by attenuating
the low-frequency range by 10 dB.

Setting the voltage selector (Worldwide model only)
Worldwide models are equipped with a voltage selector to conform
with local power supplies. Be sure to set this switch to match the power
supply in your area before plugging in the unit.
1. Determine the proper voltage for your area: 220-230 V or 120 V.
2. If the preset voltage does not conform to your area, insert a
screwdriver into the groove in the switch. Slide the switch all the
way to the right (120 V) or to the left (220-230 V), whichever is
appropriate.

Connections
The ED-301 may be connected to either a single amplifier with 5.1-channel input (ONKYO's TX-SV919THX/828THX/646/545/454/444, etc.) or three
independent power amplifiers.
If the player has an optical output terminal, connect it to INPUT-1 (OPTICAL). If the player has a coaxial output terminal, connect it to INPUT-2 (COAXIAL).
Note:
Do not turn on any component until you have completed all connections.
Insert the plugs and connectors securely. Remember that improper connection can result in noise, poor performance, or damage to the equipment.
Do not bind audio connection cables with power cords and speaker cables. Doing so causes degraded sound quality.
Remove the protective cap attached to the INPUT-1 (OPTICAL) terminal before making connection. When this terminal is not in use, replace
the protective cap.
To connect players, use cables supplied with the equipment or the proper commercially available cables.
If your speakers are connected via three independent power amplifiers, do not connect an external decoder or DVD player to the MULTI-
CHANNEL AUDIO INPUT jacks of the ED-301. Doing so may cause damage to the power amplifiers or speakers because there is no means of
adjusting the output level.
* To play Dolby Digital soundtracks, the LD player with a Dolby Digital (AC-3RF) output jack is required.

Output level setting
Set the output level for each speaker type using the test tone. You may
fine-tune the output level for the playing source later.
When setting the output level...
Use a sound pressure level (dB) meter for determining the output level of
speakers. Human ears hear the sound from subwoofers quieter than the
actual level, resulting in setting a higher output level than is optimal.
Note:
The output level of the ED-301 has been set to the maximum level (0 dB)
at the factory.
If your ED-301 is connected to power amplifiers, set the output level of
each power amplifier at a low level before turning on the ED-301.
Setting the output level using the test tone
1 Press POWER.
2 Press INPUT-1 or INPUT-2.
Skip this step if the desired input mode is already selected.
Do not press MULTI-CH INPUT or you will be unable to go on to

your A/V amplifier.
If the amplifier’s input level is too high, use the VOLUME
control button of the ED-301 to decrease the ED-301’s output
level.
If no sound is heard, check if the ED-301 is selected on the
amplifier’s input selector.
<If you use three power amplifiers... >
3-1 Press VOLUME (a) and keep it depressed until the display
shows –50 dB.
If you use three integrated amplifiers, set the output level of
each amplifier to a normally used level.
The output level setting range is between - (minimum) and
-88 to 0 dB (maximum).
Press the VOLUME a or s button and release it when the
value you wish to set is displayed. The displayed value can be
changed in increments of 1 dB by pressing and releasing the

Playing surround sounds
The ED-301 can decode signals from the following format sources:
Dolby Digital encoded software (DVD video discs with the
)
PCM format digital sounds (delivered by CD, MD or BS)
Dolby Pro Logic format surround software (VHS stereo or VHS hi-fi
cassettes, laser discs, and DVD with the
)
Notes:
This product cannot process 96-kHz sampling frequency digital
signals and other format digital signals such as MPEG.
To play laser discs with the DOLBY DIGITAL logo, an AC-3RF
demodulator is required.
Automatic judgment of Dolby Digital signals
In the "OPTICAL" or "COAXIAL" input mode, the ED-301 judges the
encoding format of the input signal and, if it is found to be a Dolby
Digital format signal, automatically switches to the correct decoding
mode.
* When the decoding mode is switched, depending on the Dolby Digital
software or playing equipment, a skipped sound or noise may be caused at
an early stage of reproduction.
After playing,
always turn down the output level of the ED-301 or A/V amplifier
before turning off the unit.
To play with a player with optical digital or analog
output jacks
1 Press POWER.
2 Press INPUT-1.
