Welcome
Welcome to BMW
We congratulate you on your
choice of a BMW wireless com-
munication system.
The BMW WCS-1 communica-
tion system enables wireless
communication between two
helmets and between the hel-
mets and other Bluetooth
devices.
The BMW WCS-1 communica-
tion system takes motorcycling
into new dimensions.
Familiarise yourself with your
new BMW WCS-1 communica-
tion system before you use it
for the first time, so that you will
be able to use it safely and con-
fidently in all traffic situations.
Your authorised BMW motor-
cycle dealer will be glad to as-
sist you in all matters relating
to your BMW motorcycle and
accessories.
In the interests of your own
safety, please read though
these operating instructions
and make sure you understand
everything, particularly the
safety instructions.
We hope you enjoy using your
BMW WCS-1 communication
system and wish you many a
pleasant, safe journey on your
BMW motorcycle.
Best wishes,
BMW Motorrad

Warnings and safety instructions
Attention
In the interests of your own
safety, please read through
these operating instructions
and make sure you understand
everything, particularly the
safety instructions.
Warning
Do not allow telephone con-
versations or music to dis-
tract your attention while you
are riding the motorcycle.
Warning
Always comply with the
rules of the road.
Warning
Set your communication
system to a volume that
enables you at all times to
perceive traffic noise and
acoustic signals from other
road users (particularly the
police and emergency
services).
You might be in contra-
vention of national road-
safety legislation in some
countries if you ride the
motorcycle with the audio
system set to a volume that
would prevent you from
hearing such noise or
acoustic signals.
Bear in mind, too, that high
noise levels can result in
permanent damage to your
hearing.
Warning
Use the communication fa-
cilities of this system only
when the traffic situation
enables you to do so with-
out risk.

Bluetooth technology was in-
troduced in 1999.
Engineer's used the code
name "Bluetooth" in honour of
the tenth-century Viking king
Bluetooth, who is credited with
unifying Denmark, and bringing
order into chaos.
Unity is what Bluetooth promis-
es, interconnecting different
devices in wireless communi-
cations.
Bluetooth is an open standard
for local radio communications,
enabling Bluetooth-compati-
ble devices to interconnect
without cabling over short
distances.
The advantage of Bluetooth is
that it dispenses with the need
for a direct line of sight.
Typically, the range for Blue-
tooth communication is about
10 metres.
Bluetooth therefore provides
voice and data communication
over the unlicensed 2.4 GHz
frequency band
(2.4 GHz 2.483 GHz), which
is available worldwide.
What is Bluetooth?

35
What is pairing?
Pairing
Pairing is the process of ena-
bling two Bluetooth devices
to communicate for the first
time.
Any two Bluetooth devices
have to be "introduced" to each
other before they can commu-
nicate.
This applies to communication
between two helmets equipped
with the BMW WCS-1 commu-
nication system, and between
a helmet with the BMW WCS-1
communication system and
some other Bluetooth device.
In the case of the BMW WCS-1
communication system, pairing
takes place in setup mode, in
other words after the device is
switched on.
