Pipeandcablelocatorsingeneralcanoperateinavarietyofmodesandfrequencies.Thefollowingis

anditisnotintendedtobeacomprehensivelocatingtutorial.Foradditionalinformationonpipeand

Passive50/60Hz(P)
Inthepassivemode,thetransmitterisnotusedatall.Instead,thereceiversearchesforan
appropriateharmonicof60or50Hzsignals(factorypreset).Thesesignalsaretypicallypresentin
energizedpowercables,makingitpossibletolocatethemwithoutusingatransmittertoimposea
tracingsignalontothem.
PassiveCathodic(PC)
Longpipelinesusuallyhavetodealwiththeissueofcorrosion.Aknowngroupoftechniquesusedto
controlcorrosioninvolvestheuseofperiodiccathodesalongthepipelineandthecirculationoflow
levelcurrentsrectifiedfromthepowergrid.Thepassivecathodicmodedoesnotusethetransmitter
atall.Instead,thereceiversearchesforanappropriateharmonicofrectified60or50Hzfromthe
powergrid.Therefore,itispossibletotracepipelinesforlongdistanceswithoutusingatransmitterto
imposeatracingsignalontothem.
Conductive(C)
Intheconductivemode,thetransmitterimposesasignalofthe"active"frequencyontothepipeor
cabletobetraced.Itdoessobymakingdirectcontactwiththepipeorcableatapointwhereit
comesuptothesurface(atransformerbox,awaterhydrant,atelephoneswitchbox,agasmeter,
etc.).Thecircuitisclosed,providingareturnpathbyagroundstakethatisburiedinthegroundinthe
vicinityofthetransmitter.
InductiveClamp(IC)
Intheinductiveclampmode,thetransmitterimposesasignalofthe"active"frequencyontothepipe
orcabletobetraced.Itdoessobyenergizinga"clamp"thatisplacedcompletelyencirclingthepipe
orcableatapointwhereitcomesuptothesurface(atransformerbox,atelephoneswitchbox,agas
meter,etc.).Theclamptheninducesacurrentontothepipeorcable.Inthismode,itisnot
necessarytoprovideareturnpathfortheinducedcurrenttothetransmitter.Theinducedcurrent
willtravelonthepipeorcableforadistancemakingitpossibletotraceit.

Inductive(I)
Intheinductivemode,thetransmitterimposesasignalofthe"active"frequencyontothepipeor
cabletobetraced.Itdoessobyradiatingasignalthroughtheinductiveantenna,whichisplacedon
thegroundinadirectionperpendiculartothepipeorcablebeingtraced.Theinductiveantennathen
inducesacurrentontothepipeorcable.Inthismode,itisnotnecessarytoprovideareturnpathfor
theinducedcurrenttothetransmitter.Theinducedcurrentwilltravelonthepipeorcablefora
distancemakingitpossibletotraceit.
Sonde(S)
Inthesondemode,thetransmitterisnotusedatall.Thismodeisusedtotracenonmetallicpipesor
metallicpipeswheretheothermodesareinapplicableorinefficient.Asmallsonde,or"beacon
transmitter",ispushedthroughthepipe,andthereceiversearchesforthesignalemittedbythe
sonde.Sincethesignalbeingtracedbythereceiverisproducedbythesondeandnottravellingalong
thepipes,therearesomedifferencesinthewaythereceiverisused.Duetothenatureandstrength
ofthesondesignal,itisnecessarytohavesomeideaofwherethesondeis(inordertonarrowthe
searchareatoaradiusofseveralfeetcenteredaroundthesonde).Thisisusuallynotmuchofa
problem,sincethesondeis"guided"byadeviceundercontroloftheworkcrew,oftenwithacamera
attachedtoit.

AutomaticandManualGain
XTpcreceivershavetheabilitytooperateinautomaticgainmodeorinmanualgainmode.Inthe
automaticgainmode,thesensitivityofthereceiverisadjustedautomatically,basedonthestrength
ofthedetectedsignal,toproducearelativelyconstantandstrongsignalstrengthindication.Inthe
manualgainmode,theuserhastheabilitytoadjustthesensitivityupordowntosuitdifferent
locatingscenarios.
DirectionalIndication
XTpcreceiversareequippedwithdirectionalindicators.Thesevisualandaudibleindicatorshelpthe
userlocatethepipeorcablebyshowingwhichdirectionhe/sheshouldmoveinordertogetcloserto
thetarget.TheseindicatorsarenotavailableintheSondemode.

DepthMeasurement
XTpcreceivershavetheabilitytomeasuretheapproximatedepthofthetargetpipeorcablebeing
traced.Thebottomtipofthereceivermusttouchthegroundwhendepthmeasurementismade,and
bestresultsareobtainedwhenthereceiverisinafullyextendedposition.Depthmeasurements
shouldonlybemadewhenthedirectionalindicationsaysthatthetargetisdirectlybelowthereceiver
andthesignalstrengthisadequate.SpecialconsiderationsarerequiredfortheSondemode(see
SECTIONVIII:OPERATINGRECOMMENDATIONSfordetails).
AutomaticandManualOutputPower
ThetransmittersoftheXTpclineofpipeandcablelocatorsdeliverpowertothe"load"connectedto
them.Intheconductivemode,theloadisthecircuitformedbythecableorpipebeingtraced,the
soilreturn,andthegroundstake.Intheinductiveclampandinductivemodes,theloadsarethe
clampandtheantenna,respectively.Theinductiveclampandinductivemodesrequirethemaximum
powerthatthetransmittercandeliver.Therefore,thetransmitterautomaticallyoperatesat
maximumpoweroutput,andthereisnoneedformanualpoweradjustment.
Intheconductivemode,thepowerdeliveredtotheloadishighlydependentontheexternal
elements(soil,typeofconductor,stakeplacements,etc.).Insomecases,morepowerisdesiredto
achievemoredistanceordepth;inothercases,lesspowerisdesiredtoavoidbleedingtonearby
conductors.Therefore,whileintheconductivemode,theuserhastheabilitytoadjusttheoutput
powermanually(seeSECTIONIII:OPERATINGCONTROLS/Transmitterfordetailsonhowtoadjust
theoutputpower).
TransmitterCurrentMeasurement
Whenoperatingintheconductivemode,transmittersoftheXTpclineofpipeandcablelocators
measureanddisplaytheamountofcurrentflowingintotheutilitybeingtraced.Thisisveryusefulin
determininghowgoodacircuithasbeenestablishedbytheoperator,whetherornotsome
improvementsshouldbemadebyrelocatingthegroundstake,orifthemetaltometalcontactofthe
conductiveclipsneedsimprovement.Alowcurrentreadingcanindicateapoortraceconductor,
poorsoilconductivity,orpoorgroundstakecontact/placement.Highercurrentreadingsindicatea
bettercircuitandabetterchanceattracinglongdistancesanddeepconductors.
Ifthecurrentreadingislow,tryimprovingtheconnectiontoseeifthecurrentincreases(checkthe
cables,clips,andgroundstake;wettheground;cleanrustordirt;etc.).Often,thereasonforthelow
currentisthesoilitself(sandyorverydry)and/orthecompositionofthepipeorcablethatisbeing
traced(castironpipes,rustedorbrokenwires,heavyinsulationtoground,etc.).Ifanimproved
connectioncannotbemade,theremaybeasmallamountofcurrentstillcirculatinginthecircuit.Try
increasingtheoutputpowermanuallyand/orincreasethegainonthereceiver.
Note:Iftheconductiveclipsarepluggedin,thetransmitterprovidedwiththeXTpc+model(theTx5)
willmeasuretheresistanceandanyACorDCvoltagethatisbetweentheconductiveclipterminals
uponpoweringup.Ifavoltageispresent,itmustberemovedbeforeproceedingtotheconductive

modeofoperation.Theresistancemeasurementprovidesanadditionalindicationofthequalityof
thelocatingcircuit.
TransmitterTimeOut
ThetransmittersoftheXTpclineofpipeandcablelocatorswillturnthemselvesoff,underthe
conditionslistedbelow,toprotectthebatteryfromanextremelydeepdischarge:
A)Alltransmitters:
WhenthebatteryvoltagehasreachedacriticallylowlevelandthechargerISNOT
pluggedin.Thislowvoltagecutoffwilloccurregardlessofthetimeoutconditionslisted
below.
B)AlltransmittersEXCLUDINGtheTx5:
1)Thecharger,conductiveclips,inductiveclamporinductiveantennaARENOT
pluggedin.Inthiscase,thetimeoutis15minutesfromthelasttimethepowerwas
turnedonorabuttonwaspressed.
2)Theconductiveclips,theinductiveclamp,ortheinductiveantennaAREpluggedin.
Inthiscase,thetimeoutis4hoursfromthelasttimethepowerwasturnedon,a
buttonwaspressed,oranaccessorywaschanged.

SECTIONIII:OPERATINGCONTROLS
Theproductcontrolsaredesignedtobeintuitiveandrequireaminimumoftrainingforeffectiveuse.
Thereceivercaneasilybeoperatedwithonehand.Thetransmitterautomaticallyrecognizeswhich
accessoryispluggedin,requiringnoadjustmentsintheinductiveandinductiveclampmodes.
Receiver
A)AllModels:
ON/VOLUME‐Thisswitchpowersonthereceiverandautomaticallysetsthevolume
toHigh.AdditionaldepressionsofthisswitchwillcyclethevolumethroughOff(no
sound),Medium,andHighsettings.
OFF‐Thisswitchremovespowerfromthereceiver.
UP/DOWNArrows‐Whenthereceiverisoperatinginmanualgainmode,pressingthe
UPorDOWNarrowswillincreaseordecreasethegainfromitscurrentsetting.When
thereceiverisoperatingintheautomaticgainmode,thefirstpressoftheUPor
DOWNarrowwillswitchthereceivertothemanualgainmode.
AUTO‐Whenthereceiverisoperatinginthemanualgainmode,pressingtheAUTO
buttonwillswitchthereceivertooperateintheAutomaticgainmode.Inthismode
thereceiveradjustsitssensitivityasafunctionofthestrengthofthedetectedsignal.
DEPTH‐Whentheproperconditionstomeasuredeptharepresent,pressingthis
switchwilldisplaythetarget'sdepthontheLCD(afteradelayof2.0seconds).The
depthwillcontinuetobedisplayedontheLCD,alongwiththeword"DEPTH",foras
longastheswitchisdepressed.Iftheswitchispressedandquicklyreleased,the
depthwillshowontheLCDmomentarily.TheXTpccanbefactorysettodisplaydepth
infeetandinchesorinmeters.Ifthedepthcannotbedeterminedduetoaweakor
noisysignaltheLCDwillshow3dashes"‐‐‐".
SONDE‐Ifthesondemodeisavailableandthereceiverisnotoperatinginsonde
mode,pressingthisswitchwillcausethereceivertogotothesondemodeof
operation.Ifthereceiverisalreadyoperatinginsondemode,pressingthisswitchwill
causethereceivertostopthesondemodeofoperation.

B)AllmodelsEXCLUDINGXTpc+:
PASSIVE‐Ifthereceiverisnotoperatinginpassivemode,pressingthisswitchwillcause
thereceivertogotothepassivemodeofoperation.Ifthereceiverisalreadyoperating
inpassivemode,pressingthisswitchwillcausethereceivertostopthepassivemodeof
operation.
PC‐Ifthepassivecathodicmodeisavailableandthereceiverisnotoperatinginpassive
cathodicmode,pressingthisswitchwillcausethereceivertogotothepassivecathodic
modeofoperation.Ifthereceiverisalreadyoperatinginpassivecathodicmode,

C)XTpc+modelONLY:
FREQ‐Anoperatingfrequencycanbeselectedbydepressingthisswitchconsecutively
untilthedesiredfrequencyisindicatedonthedisplayofthereceiver.Somefrequencies
areuniquelyassociatedwithacertainmodeofoperation;therefore,theusershould
ensurethatthesamefrequencyisselectedonboththereceiverandthetransmitter.
Thepassivemodesarealsoaccessibleviathisbutton.Whichmodeandwhich
frequencyshouldbeusedisdeterminedbythesystemconfigurationandthewaythe
transmitterisconnectedtothetargetutility.
Transmitter
A)AllModels:
ON/OFF‐Thisisamomentarypushbuttonswitchthattogglesthepowertothe
transmitteronandoff.Whenthetransmitterpowerisoff,pressthisswitchuntiltheLCD
indicatorscomeon,thenreleaseittoturnthetransmitteron.Whenthetransmitter
powerison,presstheswitchuntiltheLCDindicatorsgooff,thenreleaseittoturnthe
transmitteroff.
B)AllmodelsEXCLUDINGXTpc+:
UP/DOWNArrows‐Intheconductivemode,theoutputpowercanbeadjustedmanually
upordownusingthesecontrols.Afterthefirstpressofanarrow,thepoweradjustment
modeswitchestomanual,anditcanbeadjustedtogoaboveorbelowthesettingofthe
Automode.Toreturnthetransmittertoautopower,turnitOFFandthenONagain.
C)XTpc+modelONLY(theTx5transmitter):
FREQ‐Anoperatingfrequencycanbeselectedbydepressingthisswitchconsecutively
untilthedesiredfrequencythatmatchesthereceiver’sfrequencyisindicatedonthe
displayofthetransmitter.Thepassivemode,whichputsthetransmitterinastandby
state,isalsoaccessibleviathisbutton.Whatfrequencyshouldbeusedisdetermined
bythewaythetransmitterisconnectedtothetargetutility.

Receiver
AllvisualindicatorsforthereceiverareontheLCDdisplay,whichhassixgeneralareastodisplay
informationtotheuser:aBatteryIndicator,aGainIndicator,aFrequency/ModeIndicator,aDirection
Indicator,anAlphanumericDisplayandaVolumeIndicator.
BATTERYINDICATOR‐The"Battery"symbolindicatesthereceiver'sbatterystatus.
Whenall3segmentsinsidethebatterysymbolarepresent,thebatteryisfullycharged.
Whenonlythe2bottomsegmentsarepresent,thebatteryhasamediumcharge.When
onlythebottomsegmentispresent,thebatteryhasalowchargeandshouldbe
replaced.Iftherearenosegmentspresent,thebatteryisextremelylowandyoushould
replaceitimmediately.
GAININDICATOR‐The"(Auto)"legendnexttothe"GAIN"legendindicatesthat
thegainisintheautomaticmode.Inthismode,thereceiveradjustsitssensitivity
asafunctionofthestrengthofthedetectedsignal.Nobargraphisshowninthis
mode.
Ifthe"(Auto)"legendisnotvisible,thereceiverisoperatinginthemanualgain
mode;therefore,ameanstoshowtheuserthegainsettingisnecessary.Thebar
graphindicatestherelativestrengthofthegain,witheachbarroughly
representingonetenthofthefullscaleavailable.EachtimetheUPortheDOWN
arrowispressed,thegainisadjustedroughlyby1/30thofthefullscalerange.
Therefore,ittakesapproximately3pressesoftheUParrowtoaddonebartothe
graphandapproximately3pressesoftheDOWNarrowtodeleteonebarfromthe
graph.

ALPHANUMERICDISPLAY‐Thealphanumericdisplayisusedtodisplaysignalstrengthanddepth.On
XTpc+models,thenumericdisplayisalsousedfortemporaryindicationsofcertainoperatingmodes,
frequencies(seetableonpage14),andotherbriefinformationmessages.
SignalStrength‐Thisisanindicationoftherelativesignalleveldetectedbythereceiver
andisafunctionofthegainsetting.Goodsignalstrengthwilltypicallybebetween200
and800.Thedisplayrangeforsignalstrengthis0to999;however,averyhighsignal
strengthisnotnecessarilybetter.Ifreadingsof995orhigherareconsistent,thesignal
istoostrongandstepsshouldbetakentoreduceit.Ifareadingof“OL”isobserved,a
signalispresentwhichinterfereswiththesignalthereceiverissettodetect.Steps
shouldbetakentoidentifythesourceofinterferenceortochangethelocatingmode.
