3. What kinds of phones are the subject
of this update?
Theterm‘wirelessphone’refershere
tohandheldwirelessphoneswithbuiltin
antennas,oftencalled‘cell’,‘mobile’,or
‘PCS’phones.Thesetypesofwireless
phonescanexposetheusertomeasurable
radiofrequencyenergy(RF)becauseof
theshortdistancebetweenthephoneand
theuser’shead.TheseRFexposuresare
limitedbyFCCsafetyguidelinesthatwere
developedwiththeadviceoftheFDAand
otherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.
Whenthephoneislocatedatgreater
distancesfromtheuser,theexposureto
RFisdrasticallylowerbecauseaperson’s
RFexposuredecreasesrapidly
withincreasingdistancefromthesource.
Theso-called‘cordlessphones,’which
haveabaseunitconnectedtothe
telephonewiringinahouse,typically
operateatfarlowerpowerlevels,andthus
produceRFexposuresfarbelowtheFCC
safetylimits.
4. What are the results of the research
done already?
Theresearchdonethusfarhasproduced
conflictingresults,andmanystudies
havesufferedfromflawsintheir
researchmethods.Animalexperiments
investigatingtheeffectsofradiofrequency
energy(RF)exposurescharacteristicof
wirelessphoneshaveyieldedconflicting
resultsthatoftencannotberepeatedin
otherlaboratories.Afewanimalstudies,
however,havesuggestedthatlowlevels
ofRFcouldacceleratethedevelopment
ofcancerinlaboratoryanimals.However,
manyofthestudiesthatshowedincreased
tumordevelopmentusedanimalsthathad
beengeneticallyengineeredortreated
withcancercausingchemicalssoasto
bepredisposedtodevelopcancerinthe
absenceofRFexposure.Otherstudies
exposedtheanimalstoRFforupto22
hoursperday.Theseconditionsarenot
similartotheconditionsunderwhich
