This appliance must be installed and repaired by a quali-
ed service person who is familiar with the proper instal-
lation and operation of the Mantis Power-Vent High Ef-
ciency Fireplace. Installers who are not familiar with the
installation of the Mantis and have questions, should con-
tact Empire Comfort Systems, Inc. prior to installing the
appliance to avoid creating a hazardous operating condi-
tion.
Due to high temperatures the appliance should be lo-
cated out of trafc and away from furniture and draper-
ies.
Children and adults should be alerted to the hazards
of high surface temperatures and should stay away to
avoid burns or clothing ignition.
Young children should be carefully supervised when
they are in the same room as the appliance. Toddlers,
young children and others may be susceptible to acci-
dental contact burns. A physical barrier is recommend-
ed if there are at risk individuals in the house. To re-
strict access to a replace or stove, install an adjustable
safety gate to keep away toddlers, young children and
other at risk individuals out of the room and away from
hot surfaces.
Clothing or other ammable material should not be
placed on or near the appliance.
Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing an
appliance, must be replaced prior to operating the
appliance.
Keep burner and control compartment clean.
For manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home
or residential installation convertible for use with
natural gas and liqueed petroleum gases when
provision is made for the simple conversion from one
gas to the other.

DO keep the appliance area clear and free from
combustible material, gasoline and other ammable
vapors and liquids.
Do examine venting system periodically and replace
damaged parts.
Do make a periodic visual check of burner. Clean and
replace damaged parts.
DO NOT use this heater if any part has been under water.
Immediately call a qualied service technician to inspect
the heater and to replace any part of the control system
and any gas control which has been under water.
DO NOT operate this appliance without the front panel

SAFETY INFORMATION FOR USERS OF LP-GAS
LP-Gas (Propane) is a ammable gas which can cause res
and explosions. In its natural state, propane is odorless and
colorless. You may not know all the following safety precautions
which can protect both you and your family from an accident.
Read them carefully now, then review them point by point with the
members of your household. Someday, there may not be a
minute to lose, everyone’s safety will depend on knowing ex-
actly what to do. If, after reading the following information, you
feel you still need more information, please contact your gas
supplier.
LP-GAS WARNING ODOR
If a gas leak happens, you should be able to smell the gas because of the odorant put in the LP-Gas.
That’s your signal to go into immediate action!
Do not operate electric switches, light matches, use your
phone. Do not do anything that could ignite the gas.
Get everyone out of the building, vehicle, trailer, or area.
Do that IMMEDIATELY.
Close all gas tank or cylinder supply valves.
LP-Gas is heavier than air and may settle in low areas
such as basements. When you have reason to suspect
a gas leak, keep out of basements and other low areas.
Stay out until reghters declare them to be safe.
Use your neighbor’s phone and call a trained LP-Gas
service person and the re department. Even though
you may not continue to smell gas, do not turn on the
gas again. Do not re-enter the building, vehicle, trailer,
or area.
Finally, let the service man and reghters check for es-
caped gas. Have them air out the area before you return.
Properly trained LP-Gas service people should repair the
leak, then check and relight the gas appliance for you.
NO ODOR DETECTED - ODOR FADE
Some people cannot smell well. Some people cannot smell
the odor of the chemical put into the gas. You must nd out if
you can smell the odorant in propane. Smoking can decrease
your ability to smell. Being around an odor for a time can affect
your sensitivity or ability to detect that odor. Sometimes other
odors in the area mask the gas odor. People may not smell
the gas odor or their minds are on something else. Thinking
about smelling a gas odor can make it easier to smell.
The odorant in LP-Gas is colorless, and it can fade under
some circumstances. For example, if there is an underground
leak, the movement of the gas through soil can lter the odor-
ant. Odorants in LP-Gas also are subject to oxidation. This
fading can occur if there is rust inside the storage tank or in
iron gas pipes.
The odorant in escaped gas can adsorb or absorb onto or
into walls, masonry and other materials and fabrics in a room.
That will take some of the odorant out of the gas, reducing its
odor intensity.
LP-Gas may stratify in a closed area, and the odor intensity
could vary at different levels. Since it is heavier than air, there
may be more odor at lower levels. Always be sensitive to the
slightest gas odor. If you detect any odor, treat it as a serious leak.
Immediately go into action as instructed earlier.
SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER
Learn to recognize the odor of LP-Gas. Your local LP-Gas
Dealer can give you a “Scratch and Sniff” pamphlet. Use
it to nd out what the propane odor smells like. If you sus-
pect that your LP-Gas has a weak or abnormal odor, call
your LP-Gas Dealer.
If you are not qualied, do not light pilot lights, perform
service, or make adjustments to appliances on the LP-
Gas system. If you are qualied, consciously think about
the odor of LP-Gas prior to and while lighting pilot lights
or performing service or making adjustments.
Sometimes a basement or a closed-up house has a
musty smell that can cover up the LP-Gas odor. Do not try
to light pilot lights, perform service, or make adjustments
in an area where the conditions are such that you may not
detect the odor if there has been a leak of LP-Gas.
Odor fade, due to oxidation by rust or adsorption on walls
of new cylinders and tanks, is possible. Therefore, people
should be particularly alert and careful when new tanks or
cylinders are placed in service. Odor fade can occur in new
tanks, or reinstalled old tanks, if they are lled and allowed
to set too long before relling. Cylinders and tanks which
have been out of service for a time may develop internal
rust which will cause odor fade. If such conditions are
suspected to exist, a periodic sniff test of the gas is
advisable. If you have any question about the gas odor,
call your LP-Gas dealer. A periodic sniff test of the LP-
Gas is a good safety measure under any condition.
If, at any time, you do not smell the LP-Gas odorant and
you think you should, assume you have a leak. Then take
the same immediate action recommended above for the
occasion when you do detect the odorized LP-Gas.
If you experience a complete “gas out,” (the container
is under no vapor pressure), turn the tank valve off
immediately. If the container valve is left on, the container
may draw in some air through openings such as pilot light
orices. If this occurs, some new internal rusting could
occur. If the valve is left open, then treat the container as
a new tank. Always be sure your container is under vapor
pressure by turning it off at the container before it goes
completely empty or having it relled before it is
completely empty.

Before You Start
1. Verify there is electrical power to the unit.
Turn on the Main Power Switch.
If electrical power is present, the red and green control board
LED’s will begin to ash alternately. Each light will ash four times
then the replace will enter standby mode. While in standby mode,
the green LED will ash slowly and the display panel will show a
double dash “ - - “.

Remote Set Up - Install/Replace Batteries
The remote control receiver located in the replace does not use
batteries. It is powered by the control board.
The handheld remote is battery operated. These batter-
ies will need to be replaced periodically as part of the nor-
mal maintenance of the replace. Replace the batteries with
3 AAA sized 1.5V batteries.
The battery compartment panel is located on the back of the con-
trol.
Remote Set Up - Set the Clock
When the batteries are inserted into the remote, the time and day
must be set.
Note: This remote uses a 24-hour clock.
1. Press the remote’s adjustment button to adjust the hour.
2. Press the menu button to save the value.
3. Repeat the process for the minutes and the day.
4. If the remote has the batteries installed but the time and date
need to be adjusted, turn off the remote by holding down the
power button until the display back light turns off.
5. Simultaneously press the mode and menu buttons to enter
the Clock Setting Mode.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to adjust the settings.
Note: If the remote buttons are not used for seven seconds
while in the Clock Setting Mode, the remote will automatically
exit the Clock Setting Mode and assume the last settings en-
tered in the menu.
Remote Set Up - Temperature Units
This remote will show temperature in either degrees Celsius or
degrees Fahrenheit.
1. To switch units of measure, turn the remote off by holding the
power button until the back light on the display turns off.

remote per instructions on pages 5 and 6. After the remote is
set up, ensure that the remote is turned on and active by hold-
ing the “Power” button on the remote until the remote display

Starting the Fireplace - Remote
The remote control has two modes for controlling the replace’s
operation - Manual and Thermostatic. When the remote is in
Manual mode, the replace can be turned on and off and the
ame level adjusted manually from the remote. When operating
in Thermostatic mode, the owner sets a desired room tempera-
ture and the replace will automatically turn on and off and adjust
the ame level to achieve the set temperature. To operate the
replace with the remote control, press the “Mode Select” but-
ton on the replace display panel until a double dash “ - - “ is
displayed.
Note: When the main power to the replace is turned on, as
when following a power outage or at initial setup, the replace
will activate in Remote Mode by default.
Remote Operation - Manual Mode
1. Turn the remote on by pressing the remote’s power but-
ton. When the remote activates in either Manual (MAN) or
Thermostatic (AUTO) mode the replace will automatically
start. If the remote is not in Manual mode, press the remote’s
mode button to switch the remote’s mode to manual. The
remote display will show “MAN”.

Remote Operation - Thermostatic Mode
1. Turn the remote on by pressing the remote’s power button,
if the remote activates in Manual (MAN) or Thermostatic
(AUTO) Mode, the replace will automatically start. If the
remote is not in Thermostatic Mode, press the mode button
to switch the remote’s mode to Thermostatic. The remote
display will show “AUTO”.

2. When the remote is activated, the replace display panel will
illuminate and show Flame Level 1 along with the remote
signal symbol. The replace will begin the start up sequence
automatically.
3. Use the adjustment arrow button on the remote to set the
desired room temperature.

Note: The temperature sensing probe is built into the re-
mote. Place the remote control in a good position to monitor the
room’s average temperature.
Attention: Avoid placing the remote too close to the replace
as this will affect the remote’s temperature sensor.

Note: When the remote is in thermostatic mode, the replace
will automatically adjust the ame level to meet the heat de-
mand from the remote. The ame level will gradually increase
until the desired room temperature is reached, then the ame

CAUTION: If the replace experiences loss of power while the
remote is operating thermostatic mode, the remote will need
to be manually reset after power is restored to the replace in
order for the replace to resume normal operation. Press the
remote’s power button to turn it off then back on to reset the
remote.

If the remote control is inoperable due to being damaged or having
dead batteries, the replace’s display panel may be used to oper-
ate the replace instead.
Note: When operating the replace manually from the
display panel, only basic operations are available: On, off and
ame level adjustment.
1. To operate the replace manually, press the “Mode Select”
button on the display panel until a number appears in the
“Flame Level” location on the display panel. The replace will
begin the start up sequence.

Note: If the burner fails to light, the replace will retry the ig-
nition sequence three times then enter lock-out mode if it fails
to light. See page 19 for the fault codes and their meanings.
6. After the burner lights, the ame icon on the display panel will
appear and the replace will automatically adjust to the ame
level shown on the display.

Attention: The replace will always ignite on Level 5 (High)
prior to adjusting to the ame level shown on the display panel.
7. The blower will activate after three to ve minutes depending
on ame level. The blower will automatically adjust its speed
as the replace warms up or cools down. The blower speed
will be indicated on the display panel. See page 13.
8. The ame level can be adjusted either up or down at any
point during the replace’s operation. If using the remote’s
thermostatic function, the replace adjusts the ame level
automatically.
Note: When changing from a low ame level to a higher ame
level, the replace will automatically increase to Level 5 (High)
prior to proceeding to the desired ame level. This is to ensure
consistent operation.
9. When the replace is shut down, the inducer will operate
at full power for approximately 10 seconds after the burner
is extinguished. This is to clear any ue products from the
replace’s combustion chamber. The circulating air blower
will continue to operate until the replace cools sufciently.

Turning the Fireplace Off - Remote
When operating the replace using the remote, the replace can
be shut down by turning the thermostat temperature down (when
in thermostatic mode) or by pressing the power button on the re-
mote.
When the temperature setting is adjusted to turn off the replace,
the ame level will be gradually adjusted down until the replace
turns off.
When the remote power button is used, a single push will place
the replace into Standby Mode and the remote will display the
“PILOT” symbol.
PILOT
The burner will instantly go off, but the circulating blower will con-
tinue to operate until the replace cools off. A single push of the re-
mote’s power button will exit the standby mode, return the remote
to the previous operating mode, and turn the replace back on.
Holding down the power button until the backlight turns off will also
turn off the remote and the replace.
Note: The time, date and room temperature will still be dis-
played on the remote display, but only weekly program-settings
will be changeable.
The burner will instantly go off, but the circulating blower will con-
tinue to operate until the replace cools off.
To turn the remote and replace back on, hold the power button
down until the remote’s display panel backlight turns on again.
Turning the Fireplace Off - Display Panel
To turn the replace off from the display panel, press the “Mode
Select” button on the replace display panel until the panel turns
off.

Circulating Air Blower Operation
The circulating air blower is operated by a temperature sensing
thermistor located in the top of the replace. The blower will
activate after approximately 3 to 5 minutes depending on
ame level. The blower will automatically adjust its speed as
the replace warms up. The blower speed is indicated on the
display panel.

automatically adjusting its speed as the replace cools. Once the
replace cools sufciently the blower will turn off.
Note: When the replace is turned off, the blower speed will
not be displayed while it is running.
Humidier Operation
The Mantis Power-Vent High-Efciency Fireplace has an automat-
ic humidier designed into the replace. As the replace operates,
condensate is created and collected inside the replace. The col-
lected condensate is then transferred to a pan on top of the re-
place where it evaporates into the air stream. The humidier does
not operate with every cycle.
While the condensate is being transferred to the pan, it is normal
to hear a slight hissing sound. The “AUX” symbol will be displayed
while the condensate is being transferred.

Remote Functions - Sleep Timer
The remote is equipped with a sleep timer to automatically shut off
the replace after a certain time. The sleep timer may be set in 15
minute increments for up to 8 hours.
1. Press the menu button on the remote to enter the sleep timer
menu indicated by the crescent moon icon displayed on the
screen. Use the adjustment button to set the desired length of
time before the replace shuts down.
2. Once the desired length of time is shown, press the menu
button two more times to save the setting and return to the
remote’s home screen. The outline of the crescent moon icon

Note: If the remote buttons are not used for seven seconds
while setting the sleep timer, the remote will automatically exit
the sleep timer menu and assume the last settings entered in
the menu.
To deactivate the Timer Mode, return to the Sleep Timer menu and
set the timer to 0 (zero) minutes. Press the menu button twice to
exit the menu and save the settings. The remote’s home screen
will no longer display the crescent moon icon, indicating that the
sleep timer mode is not active.
Note: While the Sleep Timer Mode is active, the remote will
respond normally to new commands entered.
Remote Functions - Keypad Lock
The remote control is equipped with a keypad lock to prevent ac-
cidental changes to the remote settings.
1. To activate the lock, press and hold the menu button for 5
seconds. A padlock icon will appear on the display indicating
that the keypad is locked.

2. To deactivate the lock, press and hold the menu button for
5 seconds. The padlock icon will disappear when the lock is
deactivated.
Remote Functions - Battery Level Indicator
The remote control is equipped with a battery level indicator which
will appear when the remote’s battery charge is low. Replace the
batteries with 3 AAA sized 1.5V batteries. Alkaline batteries are
recommended for maximum battery life and remote performance.

Remote Functions - Pre-Set Weekly Programs
The remote control is equipped with ten pre-set weekly operation
programs. These programs allow the replace to be operated only
during peak usage times.
1. Select the desired temperature for Thermostatic Mode.
2. Press the menu button twice to enter the program selection
menu. A clock icon will show on the remote display.
3. Use the adjustment button to select the desired program.
4. Once the desired program is selected,press the menu button
to save the setting and return to the remote’s home screen.
The outline of the clock icon indicates that the program mode
is active.

Resetting the Fireplace
If for any reason the replace needs to be reset, remove the front
from the replace to access the control compartment. If an error
is present requiring that the replace be reset, the code for the
error will be displayed on the display panel along with the reset
notication.

Note: If the circulating air blower is running, allow it to com-
plete its cycle and shut down automatically before resetting the
replace. This will ensure that the replace cools down.
To reset the replace, repeatedly press the “Mode Select” button
on the display panel until the replace display turns off.

Once the display has turned off, reset the Mode to the desired
form of operation. If problems persist or resetting does not work,
contact a qualied service technician.
Cleaning the Glass Door
WARNING
Do not operated this appliance without the glass door in
place. Do not operate if the glass front is broken or dam-
aged. Do not use the glass door if the gasket is missing or
damaged.
Over time, the glass door will need to be cleaned. For best results,
it is recommended to clean the glass with high quality replace
glass cleaner.
If the glass needs to be replaced, contact a qualied service per-
son. Only glass approved by Empire Comfort Systems Inc. can be
used, any other product will void the warranty.
To clean inside the glass door, the door will need to be removed.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to clean the glass when it is hot. Do not
strike or hit the glass.
CAUTION
Be certain the glass is cool before handling.
1. For replaces equipped with the louvered front panel, remove
the lower louvered panel by lifting up, then pulling out. For
replaces equipped with the louverless surround, remove the
surround by lifting up, then pulling out.

2. Release the two door latches on the underside of the rebox.
3. Hold the bottom of the glass door and lift, keeping a rm grip
on the door.
4. Keep the glass angled to the rebox, then gently pull the glass
door away from the heater. DO NOT damage or remove the
gasket from the door.
Service and Maintenance
Although most service should be conducted by a qualied service
person, there are several things that can be checked to ensure
safe and comfortable operation.
Keep the area surrounding the replace free from any types of
combustible materials. The lter should be checked and cleaned
on a monthly basis. All other maintenance should be conducted
by a qualied service person.
Circulating Air Blower
The circulating air blower should be checked and cleaned annu-
ally by a qualied service person to ensure that your appliance is
operating efciently. Any dirt or lint can affect the operation of the
blower.
Heat Exchanger
The heat exchanger is located on the backside of the replace.
The heat exchanger should be inspected and cleaned annually by
a qualied service person.
Porcelain Liners
Over time a lm may form on the porcelain liners. It is recommend-
ed to clean the liners with a high quality replace glass cleaner. To
clean the liners, the glass door will need to be removed. Follow the
directions for removing the glass door on pages 16 and 17.
If the liners need to be replaced, contact a qualied service person.
Only liners provided by Empire Comfort Systems can be used, any
substitute will void the warranty.
Filter
The lter is located on the inside of the lower louver panel (on
replaces equipped with FIK, FFK or FWK Surrounds) or on the
inside bottom ange of the surround (FHK Surrounds).
To clean the lter on replaces equipped with the lower louver
panel, simply remove the panel and disengage the lter rod from
its retaining holes.
For replaces equipped with louverless FHK surrounds, the en-
tire surround must be removed from the replace. This is accom-
plished by lifting and removing the surround from the support
bracket hooks. Remove the lter retainers and lters from the in-
side bottom ange by removing the screw holding the lter retainer
in place.
The lters may be rinsed with water or blown clean with com-
pressed air. Allow the lters to dry completely before reinstalling
them.

periods specied below. Mantis replaces must be installed by a qualied technician and must be maintained and oper-
ated safely, in accordance with the instructions in the owner’s manual. This warranty applies to the original purchaser only
and is not transferable. All warranty repairs must be accomplished by a qualied gas appliance technician.
Limited Lifetime Parts Warranty – Factory-Installed Glass
If the factory-installed glass fails because of defective workmanship or material, Empire will repair or replace at
Empire’s option.
Limited Ten-Year Parts Warranty – Combustion Chamber
Empire promises to the owner that if the combustion chamber (see parts list) fails because of defective workman-
ship or material within ten years from the date of purchase, Empire will repair or replace at Empire’s option.
Limited Five-Year Parts Warranty – All Other Components (Except Thermostats)
Should any part fail because of defective workmanship or material within ve years from the date of purchase,

replacement parts available at the factory. Shipping expenses are not covered.
