INSTALLATION
This unit is designed to allow EI mains powered Smoke / Heat
Alarms to be permanently mounted.
WARNING:
Mains operated Smoke Alarms should be in
-
stalled by a qualified electrician in accordance with the Build
-
ing Regulations for Electrical lnstallations published by the
Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK). Failure to install this
unit correctly may expose the user to shock or fire hazards.
1. Choose mounting position following the siting instructions
in the Smoke / Heat Alarm leaflet. Remove
the power from the
circuit you plan to use. The HMSO Building Regulations state
that self-contained Smoke Alarms should be permanently
wired to a separately fused circuit at the distribution board.
2. Where the incoming wire is on the surface of the ceiling or
wall, the appropriately sized ducting/conduit must be chosen
to mate with the unit.
3. Using a sharp knife remove material from the appropriate
knockout, making sure that there is no gap when mated with
ducting / conduit. There are five knockouts, four on the sides
and one on the rear.

4. Screw the box to the surface using the two screws and plas
-
tic plugs.
5. Figure 1 shows the connections as follows: connect the in
-
coming live, neutral, interconnect (if used) to the terminal
block. Connect all the wires from the Smoke / Heat Alarm con
-
nector to the terminals, as shown. The interconnect wire must
be connected to this terminal even if no other alarms are used
in the system. Connect the wires to the required relay contacts
for controlling the auxiliary device (contacts are isolated and
are rated at 250V AC / 5 amps).
6. Bring the connector out through the rectangular hole in the
mounting plate, line up the latch with its recess and then screw
the mounting plate on to the box as shown in figure 2 with the
screws provided.
7. Push the plug on to the pins in the rear of the Smoke / Heat
Alarm and slide on the mounting plate.
8. Connect the mains power - the green LED light on the Alarm
should be on. When the test button is pressed the horn should
sound and the relay will switch within 10 seconds.
Note 1. A maximum of 12
EI150/151TL/153/154TL/155/
156TL Smoke/Heat Alarms may be interconnected to one
EI158 kit. When one alarm senses fire all interconnected units
will alarm and the relay switches.
Note 2. An Alarm with Battery Back-up (ie
EI151TL/
154TL/156TL) will continue to operate during mains failure
and will be able to switch the relay. (The relay coil is powered
by a long life 9 volt battery).
Note 3. Devices connected to the relay contacts must not give
a fire warning until the contacts have switched for at least
200mSec. (The contacts may switch momentarily when sub-
jected to electromagnetic interference).
The
EI158PB relay changes over for only 7 5) seconds and
then resets.
There are no user serviceable parts in this unit. If faulty, it must
be returned to the manufacturer for repair or replacement.
CHECKING OPERATION
Test monthly by pressing the Smoke / Heat Alarm test button.
The relay contacts should switch within 10 seconds of the
horn sounding. If there is a problem check the wiring.
The battery has sufficient power to operate the relay over
11,000 times, therefore it should last the life of the product.
If the relay fails to switch, the entire unit must be replaced.
There are no user serviceable parts in this unit.
