PLAN AHEAD
BWARNIN_5: inspect area beforestart-
ing unit. Remove all debris and herd objects
such as rocks, glass, wire, etc. that can dco-
chet, be thrown, or otherwise cause injury or
damage during operation.
• Always wear eye protectionwhen operating,
servicing,or pefformthgmaintenanceon unit.
Wearing eye protection will help to prever_
brushor debrisfrom beingthrownorricochet-
ing into eyes and face which can result in
blindnessand/or serious injury. Eye protec_
tion should he marked Z87.
• Wear hearing protection when using this
unit.
• Secure hairabove shoulder length. Secure
or remove ewelry, loose clothing, or oloth-
ng wth ooseyhangng straps, tes, tas-
sels, etc. They can be caught in moving
parts.
• Stay alert. Do not operateunit whenyou are
tired,il!,upset,or ifyou areundertheinfluence
of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
• Keep children, bystanders, and animals
away from work area a minimum of 30feet
(f0 m) when starting or operating unit.
HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION
• Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame (inn
cludthg smoking, open flames, or work that
can causesparks inthe areaswhere fuelis
mxed, poured, or stored.
• Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area; store
fuel in a cool, dry,well ventilated place; use
an approved, marked container for all fuel
purposes.
• Do not smoke while handling fuel or while
operating the unit.
Do notfill fuel tank while engine is running.
: Make sure the unit is properly assembled
and in good operating condition.
• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up fuel spills
before starting the engine.
• Move atleast 10feet (3 meters) away from
fuel and fueling site before starting engine.
• Always store gasoline in a container ap-
proved for flammable liquids.
OPERATE YOUR UNIT SAFELY
_DANGER: RISK OF CUT; KEEP
HANDS AWAY FROM BLADE-Blade
moves momentarily after the trigger is re-
leased. Do not attempt to clear away cut ma-
terial when the blade is in motion. Make sure
the switch is in the OFF position, the spark
plug wire isdisconnected, and the blade has
stopped moving before removing jammed
material from thecutting blade. Do notgrab or
hold the unit by the cutting blade.
• Inspect unit before each use for worn,
loose, missing, or damaged parts. Do not
use until unit is in proper working order.
• Keep outside surfaces free from oil and
fuel.
• Never start or run engine inside a closed
room or building. Breathing exhaust fumes
can kill.
• Avoid dang_erousenvironments. Do notuse
in unventilated areas or where explosive
vapors or carbon monoxide build up could
be present.
• Do notoverreach or use from unstable sur-
faces such as ladders, trees, steep slopes,
rooftops, etc. Keepfirm footing and balance
at all times.
• Do notraise unit above your shoulders; the
cutting blade can come dangerously close
to your body.
• Always keep unit infront ofyour body.Keep
all parts of your body away from thecutting
blade.
• Keep the cutting blade and air vents free
from debris.
• Use only for jobs explained in this manual.
MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT PROPERLY
• Have all maintenance other than the rec_
ommended procedures described inthe in-
struction manual performed by an autho-
rized service dealer.
• Disconnect spark plug before performing
maintenance except for carburetor adjust-
ments.
• Do not use a cutting blade that is bent,
warped, cracked, broken, or damaged in
any other way. Have worn or damaged
parts replaced by an authorized service
dealer.
• Use only recommended Weed Eater_ cut-
ting blades and replacement parts; use of
any other parts may void your warranty and
cause damage to your unit.
• Empty fuel tank beforestoring the unit. Use
upfuel leftin carburetorby startingengineand
lettingit run untilit stops.
• Handcarry the unitwith the en_g_lthestopped
and the muffler andcutting blade away from
your body.
• Allow engine to cool, empty the fuel tank,
and secure the unit before storing or trans-
porting it in avehicle.

The ON/OFF SWITCH is used to stop the en-
gine. Tostop engine, move switch to OFE
CHOKE
The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to theengine
to aid in cold starting. Activate the choke by
movingchokelever tothedesired position.See

PRIMER BULB
The PRIMER BULB removes airfrom thecar*
buretor and fuel lines and fills them with fuel.
This allows you tostart the engine with fewer
pulls on the starter rope. Activate the primer
bulb by pressing it and allowing it to return to
its original position.
THROTTLE TRIGGER
The THROTTLE TRIGGER controts engine
speed.Squeezethetriggerfor full speedopera-
tion; release itfor idle speed.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

information in the safety rules before you be-
gin. Ifyou do not understand the safety rules,
do not attempt to fuel your unit. Call

FUELING ENGINE
_kWARNING: Remove fuel cap slowly
when refueling.
This engine is certified to operate on un-
tended gasoline. Before operation, gasoltae
must be mixed with a good quality synthetic
2*cycte air-cooled engine oil designed to be
mixed at a ratio of 40:1. Poulan/Weed Eater
brand synthetic oil is recommended. A 40:1
ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2 ounces (95ml)
ofoit with t gallon (4 liters) of unleaded gaso.

These oils will cause engine damage. When
mixing fuel, follow instructions printed on oil
container. Once oil is added to gasoline,
shake container momentarily to assure that
the fuel isthoroughly mixed. Atways read and
follow the safety rutes listed under HANDLE
FUEL WITH CAUTION.
IMPORTANT
Experience indicatesthat a_coholblendedfueJs
(called gasohoi or using ethanol or methanol)
can attract moisturewhich leads to separation
and formation of acids during storage. Acidic
gas can damage the fuel system of anengine
while in storage. To avoid engine problems,
empty the fuel system before storage for 30
days or longer.Drainthegas tank, star_theen-
gineand let itrun untilthefuel linesand carbure-
tor are empty. Usefresh fuel next season.
Never use engine orcarburetor cleaner prod-
ucts in the fuel tank or permanent damage
may occur.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
It is recommended that the engine not be
operated for Iongerthan 30 seconds atfull
throttle. Releasing the trigger and allowing
the engine to briefly return to idle speed (5 -
10 seconds) will besufficient.
IMPORTANT POINTS
• Use the minimum throttle speed necessary
to effectively cut hedges for optimal hedge
trimmer performance.
• Never attempt to use this hedge trimmer to
cut hedges that have any branches with a
diameter larger than 7/16".

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE
• To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF
switch to the OFF position.
STARTING YOUR ENGINE
• Fuel engine. Move at least 10 feet (3 me-
ters) away from the fueling site.
• Hold the unit on the ground in the starting
position as shown. Support unit so the
blade is off of the ground and away from
trees, bushes, onlookers, etc.

2. Engage the throttle lock as follows:
• press the throttle lock-out;
• squeeze and hold throttle trigger;
• press and hold throttle lock, then
• release the throttle trigger
NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged until
the engine starts.

5. Pull starter rope handle sharply until en-
gine sounds as ifit istrying to run, but do
not pull rope more than 6 times.
6. Move the choke lever to the HALF
CHOKE position.
7. Pull starter rope sharply until the engine
runs, but no more than 6 pulis.
NOTE: Iftheenginedoesn't start after 6polls
(at the HALF CHOKE position), check to
make sure the ON/OFF switch is in the ON
position. Move the choke lever to the FULL
CHOKE position and press the primer bulb 6
times; pull the starter rope 2 more times.
Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE
position and poll the starter rope until the en-
gine runs, but no more than 6 more pulls. If
the enlgine still doesn't start, it is probably
flooded. Proceed to STARTING A
FLOODED ENGINE.
8. Once the engine starts, allow theengine to
run 10seconds, thenmove the choke lever
totheOFF CHOKE position.Allowthe unitto
runfor30moreseconds attheOFFCHOKE
position beforesqueezingand releasing the
throttletrigger to releasethe throttle lock.
NOTE: Ifengine dies with thechoke lever in
theOFFCHOKE position, move thechoke le-
verto the HALF CHOKE position and pull the
rope until the engine runs, but nomore than 6
pulls.
STARTING A WARM ENGINE
1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON posi*
tion.
2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
3. Move the choke lever to the HALF
CHOKE position.
4. Engage the throttle lock as directed in
STARTING A COLD ENGINE.
NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged unti_
the engine starts.
5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,
but no more than 5 pulis.
6. Allow the engine to run 10 seconds, then
move the choke lever tothe OFF CHOKE
position.
7. Release thethrottle lock bysqueezing and
releasing the trigger.
NOTE: Ifengine has not started, pull starter
rope 5more pulls. Ifengine still does not run,it
is probably flooded. Proceed to STARTING A
FLOODED ENGINE.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded en_ginescan be started by placing
the ON/OFFswitch in the ONposition and the
choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position and
engaging the throttle lock as directed in the
STARTING A COLD ENGINE section; then,
pull the rope to clear the engine of excess
fuel. Starting could require pulling the starter
rope many times depending on how badlythe
unit is flooded.If the unit stilldoesn't start, refer
to the TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call
1-800-554-6723.

Thewarrantyon this unit does notcover items
that have been subjected to operator abuse
or negligence. To receive full value from the
warranty, the operator must maintain unit as

plete unit for loose or damaged parts. After
each use, clean the unit and labels using a
damp cloth with a mild detergent.
• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.

Cleaning the air filter:
A dirty air filter decreases engine perform-
ance and increases fuel consumption and
harmful emissions. Always clean after every
5 hours of operation.
• Clean the cover and the area around itto
keep debris from falling into the carburetor
chamber when the cover is removed.
• Remove parts as illustrated.
NOTE: Donotclean filter in gasoline or other
flammable solvent. Doing so can create a fire
hazard or produce harmful evaporative emis-
sions.
• Wash the fiffer in soap and water.
• Allow filter to dry.
• Add a few drops of oil tothe filter; squeeze
filter to distribute oil
• Replace parts.
INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK
ARRESTING SCREEN
WARNING: The muffler on this prod-
uct contains chemicals known to theState of
California to cause cancer.
As your unit isused, carbon deposits build up
onthe muffler and spark arresting screen and
must beremoved to avoid creating afire haz-
ard or affecting engine performance.
For normal homeowner use, the muffler and
spark arresting screen will not require any
service. After 50 hours of use, we recom-
mend that your muffler be serviced or re-
placed by an authorized service dealer.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
WARNING: Keep others away when
making idle speed adjustments. The blade
will bemoving during most of this procedure.
Wear your protective equipment andobserve
all safety precautions. When making adjust-
ments, use a screwdriver short enough to
keep your hands behind the handguard and
away from the blade. After makin_g adjust-
ments, the blade must notmove atidle speed.
The carburetor has been carefully set atthe
factory. Adjustments may benecessary if you
notice any of the following conditions:
• Engine will not idle when the throttle is re-
leased.
• The blade moves at idle. Keep others away
when making idle speed adjustments.
Make adjustments with the unit resting on a
level surface free ofdebris that can becaught
in the hedge trimmer blade. Serious injury to
the operator and others can occur if the car-
buretor is not properly adjusted. Keep all
parts of your body away from the blade and
muffler.

Allow engine to idle.Adjust speed untilengine
runswithout blade moving (idle toofast) or en-
gine stalling (idle speed too slow).
Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in-
crease engine speed ifengine stalls or dies.
• Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to
decrease engine speed if the blade moves
at idle.

after each adjustment. The blade must not
move at idle speed to avoid serious injury to
the operator or others.

REPLACE SPARK PLUG
Replace spark plug each year to ensure the
engine starts easier and runs better. Set
spark plug gap at0.025 inch. Ignition timing is
fixed, nonadjustable.
1. Twist, then pul_off spark plug boot.
2. Remove spark I_ugfrom cylinder and dis-
card.
3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y spark
plug and tighten securely with a 3/4 inch
socket wrench.
4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.
REPLACE FUEL FILTER
Toreplace fuel filter, drain unit by running itdry
of fuel, then remove fuel cap/retainer assem-
bly from tank. Pull filter from tank andremove
it fromthe fuel line. Install new fuel filter onfuel
_ine;reinstatl parts.

aWARNIN_: Perform the following
steps after each use:
• Allow engine to cool, and secure the unit
before storing or transporting.
• Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area
where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or
open flames from water heaters, electric
motors or switches, furnaces, etc.
• Store unit with all guards in place. Position
unit so that any sharp object cannot acci-
dentelly cause injury.
• Store unit and fuel well out of the reach of
children.
SEASONAL STORAGE
Prepareunit for storage atend ofseason or if
it will not be used for 30 days or more.
Ifyour unit is to be stored for a period of time:
• Clean the entire unit.
• Store in a clean dry area.
• Clean all parts and check for damage.
Have damaged parts repaired or replaced
by an authorized service dealer.
• Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight.
• Lightly oil external metal surfaces, includ-
ing the blade.
To oil the blade, do the following:
• Stop the engine and allow blade to come to
a complete stop.
• Ensure ON/OFF switch is in theOFF posi-
tion.
• Disconnect the spark plug wtte.
• Apply a light machine oil along the edge of
the top strap as shown.

FUEL SYSTEM
Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA*
TION section ofthis manual,see message la-
beled IMPORTANT regarding the use of ga-
sohol in your engine. Fuelstabilizer is an ac_
ceptabie alternative in minimizing theformation
offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabi*
iizerto gasoline in fueltank orfuel storagecon-
tainer.Follow the mix instructions foundon sta-
bilizer container.Run engine atleast 5minutes
afteradding stabilizer.

• Removespark plug and pour 1teaspoon of
40:1,2-cycle engine oil (air cooled) through
the spark plug opening. Slowly pull the
starter rope 8 to 10 times to distdbute oil.
• Replacespark plugwith new one ofrecom-
mended type and heat range (see RE*
PLACE SPARK PLUG section).
• Clean air filter.
• Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts,
and bolts. Replace any damaged, broken,
or worn parts.
• At the beginning of the next season, use
only fresh fuel having theproper gasoline to
oil ratio.
OTHER
• Do not store gasoline from one season to
another.
• Replace your gasoline can if it starts torust.

ELECTROLUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC.,
must warrant the emission control system on
your small off-road engine for the periodsof
time listed below provided there has been no
abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance of
yoursmall off-roed engine engine. Youremis-
sion control system includes parts such as
thecarburetor andthe ignition system. Where
a warrantable condition exists, ELECTRO-
LUX HOME PRODUCTS, INC., will repair
your small off-roed engine engine at no cost
toyou. Expenses covered underwarranty in-
cludediagnosis, parts and labor. MANUFAC-
TURER'S WARRANTY COVERAGE: If any
emissions related part on your engine (as
listed under Emissions Control Warranty
Parts List) is defective or adefect inthe mate-
rials orworkmanshipof the engine causes the
failure of such an emission related part, the
part will be repaired or replaced by ELEC-

you are responsible for the performance of
the required maintenance listed in your in-

warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for

El 8OM 8EADOR es usado para remover aire

ABASTECIMIENTO DEL MOTOR
dI_ADVERTENCIA: Remueva latapa
del tanque decombustible lentamente al rea-
bastecer combustible.
Este motor est& habililado para funcionar con
gasolina sin ptom& Antes de comenzar con el
uso, se debera mezclar la gasolina con un
aceitede sint6tico de buena calidad para mo-
totes de 2 tiempcs enfriades a aire. Recomen-
demos el aceitede sint6tico de la marca Pou-
tan/Weed Eater. Mezcle la gasolina con el
aceite en la proporci6n 40:1.( Se obdene una
proporci6n de 40:1 mezclando 3.2 onzas de
aceite con cada gal6n de gasolina sinplomo).
NO USE aceite para autom6viles ni para
barcas. Estos aceites daSar_n el motor. AI
mezclar el combustible, siga las
instrucciones impresas en el recipiente de
aceite. Una vez a_adido el aceite a la
gasolina, agite el recipiente brevemente para
asegurarse que el combustible est6
completamente mezclado. Lea siempre y
siga las reglas de seguridad que se
encuentran bajo MANEJE EL COMBUS-
TIBLE CON EXTREMO CUIDADO en la
seccion reglas de seguridad.

IMPORTANTE
La experiencia indica que los combustibles
mezclados con alcohol (los Ilamados gasohol
o los que tienen etanol o metanol) pueden
atraer la humedad, Io que puede causar la
separaci6n y la formaci6n de _cidos durante

probemas con e motor, deber_ vac arse e

COMO DETENER EL MOTOR
• Paradetener el motor, mueva el interruptor
ON/OFF a laposici6n OFF.
COMO ARRANCAR EL MOTOR
• Abastezca el motor con combustible. Al_
jese por Io menos 3 metros (10 pies) de la
zona de abastecimiento.
• Sostenga el aparato en el suelo en la posi-
ci6n de arranque como se ilustra. Apoye el
aparato de manera que la cuchiila se en-
cuentre a distancia del suelo y alejada de
&rboles, arbustos, espectaderes, etc.
3. Oprima lentamente el bombeador 6
veces.
4. Mueva la palanca del cebador a la posi_
ci6n FULL CHOKE.

6. Mueva la paIanca del cebador a la posi-
ci6n HALF CHOKE.
7. Tirefirmementedel mangode la cuerda de
arranque hasta que el motor arranque,
pero no mas de 6tirones.

AVISO: Si el motor no arranca despu6s del
sexto tir6n de la cuerda de arranque (con la
palanca del cebador en la posici6n HALF
CHOKE), verifique que el interruptor ON/
OFF est_ en la posici6n ON. Mueva la palan-
ca del cebador a la posici6n FULL CHOKE y
oprima el bombeador 6 veces; tire firme-
mente del mango de la cuerda de arranque
otras 2veces. Mueva la palanca del cebador
ala posici6n HALF CHOKE y tire dela cuerda
de arranque hasta que el motor se ponga en
marcha, pero no m_s de 6veces. Si el motor
no arranca, probabtemente se encuentre
ahogado. Procede con la secci6n ARRAN-
QUE DE MOTOR AHOGADO.
8. Una vez que el motor arranca,permita que
el motor marche par 10 segundes, luego
mueva la palancadel cebador a la posicion
OFFCHOKE. Permitaque el motormarche
parotros 30segundos con la palancaenla
posici6n OFF CHOKE, entonces suelte el
cierre del ace_eraderapretandoy luego sol-
tando el gatillo acelerader.
AVISO: Si el motorse cala con la palanca de
cebado_en la pasici6nOFF CHOKE, mueva la
palancaa laposici6nHALFCHOKE y tiredela
cuerda dearranquepastaqueel motorse pan-
ga en marcha, perono mas de 6 tirones.
PARA ARRANCAR CON EL MOTOR

AVISO: Mantenga el cierre del acelerador
accionado hasta que el motor arranca.
5. Tire firmemente de la cuerda de arranque
hasta que el motor se ponga en marcha,
pero no mas de 5 veces.
6. Permita que el motor marche por 10 se-
gundos, luego, mueva la palanca del ce-
bador a la posici6n OFF CHOKE.
7. Suelte el cierre del acelerador apretandoy
soltando el gatillo acelerador.
AVI80: Si el motor no se ha puesto en
marcha, tire de la cuerda de arranque otras
5 veces. Si el motor persiste sin arrancar,
probablemente se encuentre ahogado. Pro-
ceda con la seccion ARRANQUE DE MO-
TOR AHOGADO.
ARRANQUE DE MOTOR AHOGADO
Un motorque se encuer4ra ahogadose podra
paner en marcha moviendo el interruptor
ON/OFF a la pcsici_ ON y la palanca de
cebader a la pasici6nOFF CHOKE accione el
cierre del acelerader como se muestra en la
secci6n PARA ARRANCAR CON MOTOR
FRIO;luego,tirede la cuerda dearranquepara
aclarar el motor del exceso de combustil_e.
Que el motor se panga en marcha padra
significarque se tire de la cuerda de arranque
muchas veces, depandiendocuan ahogadese
encuentre el motor. Si el motor no arranca
despu6_ de este prccedimiento, vea la TABLA
DIAGNOSTICA o Ilameal 1*800-554*6723.
_ADVERTENCIA: AsegQrese de
que el interruptor ON/OFF est_ en posicion
OFF y desconeote la bujia antes de hacer cu-

Limpie elfiltro de aire:
Los filtros de aire sucios disminuyen la vide
6til y el rendimiento del motor e incrementan
el consumo de combustible y de emiciones
nocivas. Limpie siempre el filtro de aire
despu6s de cada 5 horas de uso.
• Limpie la tapa yla superficie alrededor dela
tapa paraevitar que caiga suciedad o dese-
chosen el carburador cuando se saque la
tapa.
• Retire las piezas como se ilustra.
AVISO: Para evitar pe_igrode incendio y de
emiciones evapar_ivas nccivas, nolimpie el fil-
tro de aire con gasolina ni cualquier otto sol-
vente inflammable.
• Limpie el filtro con agua y jab6n.
• Permita que el filtro se seque.
• Aplique varias gotas de aceite al filtro; ex-
prima el filtro para distribuir el aceite.
• Reponga las piezas.
INSPECCIONE LA REJILLA ANTI-
CHISPA Y EL SILENClADOR
_I, ADVERTENCIA: El silenciador en
este produoto condene las substancias
qufmicas que el estado de California recon-
oce como causantes de cancer.
Amedide que se use elaparato, el silenciador
y la rejilla antichispas se van carbonizando.
Es necesario sacar la carbonizaci6n paraevi-
tar el riesgo de incendio o afectar el rendi-
miento del motor.
Para el uso normal del dueSo de la casa, el
silenciader y .la rejilla antichispa no requedr_n
ning6nservtc=o. Despu_s de 50 horas de uso,
recomendamos que al silenciader se le de
servicio osea substituide pc_unsu agente de
sercicio autorizado.

AJUSTE AL CARBURADOR
_ADVERTENCIA: Mantengaa otras
personas a_ejadasde lazona endonde seen*
cuentre haciendo ajustes de marcha lenta.
Lacuchilla se mover_ durante la mayor parte
de este procedimiento. Usesu equipo protec*
tory observe todas las precauciones de se*
guridad. Ai hacer austes, utiiice un destornib
adorcorto para mantener sus manos detras
del protector de mano y lejos de ia cuchilia.
Despu6s de finalizar con el procedimiento de
ajuste, la cuchilla deberan parar de moverse
mientras el motor se encuentra ala velocidad
de marcha lenta.
El carburador ha sido a'ustadoll cuidadosa-
mente en la f&brica. PosiSlemente sea nece*
sario hacer ajustes si se nora cualquiera de
_s siguientes condiciones:

Mantenga a otras personas alejadas de la

tos. Si el carburader no se ajusta de forma
apropiade puede causar graves heridas al
usuario u otras personas. Mantenga todas
_aspartes desu cuerpo a_ejadasde la cuchil_a
y del silenciador.
Marcha Lenta
Deje el motor en marcha _enta.Ajuste las re-
voluciones hasta que el motor se mantenga
en marcha sin que el cuchilia se muevan la
marcha enta es demas ado o que e motor
se ahogue (ia marcha ienta es demasiado
ienta).
• Gire e_tomilio de marcha lentahacia la dere-
cha paraaumer4arlasrevoluciones si el mc_
tor se ahoga o se par&
• Gire eltornillo de marcha lenta hacia la iz*
