AIM104-OUT16 Technical Manual Introduction
© 2007 Eurotech Ltd Issue G 4
Introduction
The AIM104-OUT16 is an 8-bit PC/104 module providing 16 opto-isolated Darlington
driver outputs. The module provides electrical isolation of up to 1500V between your
PC/104 based control system and the electrical system you are controlling. The
isolation between adjacent channels is limited to 100V by the wiring and connectors.
The outputs are configured as current sinking drivers with a drive capability of up to
600mA for channels 0 to 4, and up to 300mA for channels 5 to 15.
Features
Maximum operating voltage for the load is 30V.
Maximum switching frequency for each output is 40KHz.
Switching time delays: OFF to ON 5ms and ON to OFF 8μs.
All outputs include a catch diode to the positive supply for added protection when
driving inductive loads.
Module access LED (on all decoded addresses).
8-bit PC/104 (IEEE996) bus interface.
Operating temperature range: -20°C to +70°C.
Power consumption from the PC/104 host, max 125mA at +5V.
MTBF: 702,000 hours (using generic figures from MIL-HDBK-217F at ground
benign).

Handling your board safely
Anti-static handling
This board contains CMOS devices. These could be damaged in the event of static
electricity being discharged through them. Observe anti-static precautions at all times
when handling circuit boards. This includes storing boards in appropriate anti-static
packaging and wearing a wrist strap when handling them.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
The AIM104-OUT16 is classified as a ‘component’ with regard to the European
Community EMC regulations and it is the user’s responsibility to ensure that systems
using the board are compliant with the appropriate EMC standards.
The opto-isolation provides a good barrier for noise emissions generated by the high
frequency host PC/104 system. The AIM104-OUT16 includes additional filter
components on-board to minim
ise the emissions of high frequency noise. Because of
this, the earth tab supplied with the module must be connected to the chassis of the
system by a good earth wire.
If the electronic system requires input protection against high voltage transients (to
meet CE requirements), it is recommended that an external interface board is located
at the point where the external wiring enters the electronic system enclosure:
Packaging
Should a board need to be returned to Eurotech Ltd, please ensure that it is
adequately packed, preferably in the original packing material.
RoHS compliance
The European RoHS Directive (Restriction on the Use of Certain Hazardous
Substances – Directive 2002/95/EC) limits the amount of six specific substances within
the composition of the product. The AIM104-OUT16 is available as an RoHS-6
compliant option and is identified by an -R6 suffix in the product order code. A full
RoHS Compliance Materials Declaration Form is included in
Appendix B – RoHS-6
Compliance - Materials Declaration Form
, page 14. Further information about RoHS
compliance is available on the Eurotech Ltd web site:

What items are provided?
The AIM104-OUT16 is supplied with the following items:
The AIM104-OUT16 or AIM104-OUT16-DC/DC board.
Mounting kit.
Getting started
Unpacking and connecting up
To begin using the AIM104-OUT16 board, follow these steps:
1 Power down your computer.

AIM104-OUT16 Technical Manual Operation
© 2007 Eurotech Ltd Issue G 8
Operation
Switch ON each output channel by writing a 0 to the channel control register. The
Darlington output sinks current when switched ON. On power-up, or when reset is
asserted, all the outputs are disabled and switched OFF. If the power on the PC/104
host system is switched off at any time, all outputs are switched OFF. You can enable
the outputs by writing to Base +2 address. The following diagram illustrates this:
AIM104-OUT16 Technical Manual Power dissipation and current handling for devices IC1 and IC2
© 2007 Eurotech Ltd Issue G 9
Power dissipation and current handling for devices IC1 and
IC2
In order to prevent damage to the output Darlington drivers, the total power dissipation
per device must be below 1.56W at 25°C. This must be de-rated at 12.5mW/°C above
25°C. Power dissipation for each channel is calculated as load current times 1.5.
Channels 0, 1, 2, 5 together<1.56W.
Channels 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 together<1.56W.
Channels 9 – 15 together<1.56W.
The following chart provides guidelines for the maximum current handling for each
device, and how the handling is de-rated with increased temperature:
Output channels 0 to 4 are capable of sinking up to 500mA. All of the other
channels can sink up to 300mA.
For further information about the output drive capability of this product, please refer to
Eurotech Ltd Product Notice 32, which can be found on the Eurotech Ltd website

The board access LED gives a momentary flash when the board is successfully
accessed. The module registers are accessed at the following locations:
Address Read/write Register name Bit functions
Base Write Channel control 0-7 Bit 0-7: 0 = ON 1 = OFF
Base Read Channel status 0-7 Control register O/P (valid only when
bit 0 of output enable control = 1)
Base+1 Write Channel control 8-15 Bit 0-7: 0 = ON 1 = OFF
Base+1 Read Channel status 8-15 Control register O/P (valid only when
bit 1 of output enable control = 1)
Base+2 Write Output enable control Bit 0: Channels 0-7
0 = OFF 1 = Enabled
Bit 1: Channels 8-15
0 = OFF 1 = Enabled
Bit 2-7: Not used
Base+2 Read Not used
Base+3 Write Not used
Base+3 Read Not used
We recommend that, during system initialisation, the values to be output
are written to the control registers prior to enabling the output channels.

The output connector includes 4 isolated ground connections. If you intend
to use the module to drive many loads, it is recommended that as many as
possible of these are connected to the ground of the external power supply.
Remember that the maximum current rating of typical ribbon cable is 1A.
You can help to reduce electrical noise generation by distributing the load
current on the ground return path amongst a number of ribbon cable wires.
