Water
“Pure water” is water without any harmful, unhealthy
or undesired amounts of organic or inorganic
substances. Water purification means separating out
these particles and substances. In regular purification
certain substances are separated from the water. Reverse
osmosis is a super-filtering process in which even the
smallest particles and amounts of substances can be
separated off. The technique means that the non-
purified water is split into two streams, the purified
water and a concentrate containing the impurities.
Osmosis - reverse osmosis
In the natural world, for example in our bodies,
water is transported by means of osmosis. The cell
walls are a natural osmotic membrane which separate
impurities from pure water. In the reverse osmosis
water purification technique the water is forced
under high pressure through a semi-permeable
membrane. This results in the pure water, the
osmosis water, being separated off from its
impurities. The synthetic membrane is only
permeable to water. Other substances made up of
molecules just a little larger than water molecules can
not penetrate the membrane, but are separated off.
One major advantage with reverse osmosis is that no
chemicals are used or added to the water in the
purification process.
Only reverse osmosis, one of the most efficient water
purification methods, can purify water in a single
step when the water contains:
- cations and anions
anions such as chlorides, fluorides, nitrates or nitrites
hardness: calcium and magnesium
metals: aluminium, iron and manganese
heavy metals: lead, zinc, cadmium, chrome, mercury
cations such as sodium and potassium
asbestos
- organic substances
diesel oil and benzene
chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. trihalomethanes
PCBs
pesticides
endotoxins
- micro-organisms
bacteria: coliform bacteria, including fecal coli and
escerichia coli (E.coli)
viruses
parasites, e.g. Cryptosporidium and Guardia

The RO 400 Direct Flow is a very safe appliance, but even so it is important that everyone using
it should be thoroughly familiar with the way it works and its safety features. To prevent mishaps
and problems you should read the “Safety Information” on these pages, and carefully follow the
instructions in the “Installation” section. Take care of this manual and make sure that it
accompanies the water purifier if it is moved or sold.
SAFETY INFORMATION
Check that the water you intend to purify meets
the requirements listed under “Requirements of
feed water to the RO 400”, in the section
“Technical data”.
When the RO 400 is brand-new, the purified water
must not be consumed until after the calibration
and flushing procedures have been completed.
Calibration of the RO 400 should only be carried
out:
- the first time that the water purifier is used
- if the appliance is moved to a different place
(locality) with different water quality
- after the membrane has been replaced
Since the membrane contains the special products
for storage or descaling, it will have to be cleaned
by following the “Flushing procedure” before the
water from the water purifier may be used.
The water produced by the appliance should
ideally only be consumed if Purification Level
indicator II or III on the control panel is lit.
Do not use the purified water if there are any
changes in its taste or smell. Contact your dealer.
If any leakage occurs, turn off the supply of water
to the appliance immediately and disconnect the
appliance from the electrical supply by removing
the electrical plug from the wall socket, or if
necessary, removing the relevant fuse from the
electrical distribution board (consumer unit) or
switching off the circuit breaker.
If the RO 400 is not going to be used for more
than four months, or if the water purifier is going
to be disconnected from the water and electricity
supplies for a period of time (several days) then
the RO 400 should be put into storage. This also
provides protection against freezing at
temperatures as low as -30°C. See “Storage”.
If the temperature in the room where the
RO 400 is stored is likely to fall below 0°C, the
RO 400 must be protected against freezing by
storing the appliance using the “Storage”
procedure.
Do not attempt to modify or otherwise alter the
RO 400 in any way. Doing so could result in
personal injury and/or damage to property which
would not be covered by any warranty.
Once every month you should check that the
connections are all watertight. Leaks outside the
appliance cannot be detected by the appliance's
leakage protection system.
If the water purifier is malfunctioning, it should be
isolated from the electrical supply by removing the
electrical plug from its socket. If this is not
possible, remove the relevant fuse or switch off the
circuit breaker at the electrical distribution board.
At the end of the appliance's useful life,
disconnect the electrical plug from the power
supply, then cut the electrical lead at the point
where it enters the appliance. Make quite sure
that children will not be able to play with the
severed lead.
How to use the RO 400
The RO 400 is designed to produce water for appli-
ances which require water of a high level of purity
or of a consistent quality, eg. humidifying systems.
The appliance needs to remain connected to the
water and electrical supplies so that its automatic
flushing system can function. The appliance will
carry out flushing automatically every 12 hours
(approximately).
The appliance must not be operated without the
filters being in place (except during descaling,
disinfection or storage). Doing so can cause
serious damage to the membrane.
If the appliance has not been used for some time,
during which time the membrane has not been
under pressure, the concentration of impurities
tends to equalise on both sides of the membrane.
There could then be a delay of up to 60 sec.
before the RO 400 indicates that the optimum
water purification level has been reached.
The appliance will flush automatically after water
is drawn from it, every 15 minutes when it is in
operational mode and also whenever the electrical
supply is connected. See “ Drawing off purified
water”.

SAFETY INFORMATION
Installation and service
Make sure that the relevant regulations for the
installation of electrical and water systems are
followed carefully when installing the RO 400
The water purifier must be connected to an
earthed electrical supply. We recommend that a
plug-in connection is used since certain
procedures such as replacing filters, preparing the
appliance for storage and moving it if necessary
require the power supply to be disconnected.
If the appliance is to be permanently wired to the
electrical supply, this work must be carried out by
a qualified electrician. Installation work which has
not been carried out properly can result in
personal injury and/or damage to property which
are not covered by any warranty.
Any plumbing work required should be carried
out by a qualified plumber. If you do any of the
installation work yourself, you must check the
applicable regulations and comply with them.
It is important that the water purifier should be
installed in an upright position.
Check that no hoses or cables get jammed when
moving the water purifier, eg. during installation
or cleaning.
The reverse osmosis technique very effectively
reduces most substances, which means that the
purified water from the RO 400 has very low
levels of those substances that normally protect
pipes, tanks, valves, etc. You should bare in mind
the risk of corrosion and leakage when choosing
materials for ancillary equipment which is to be
attached to the RO 400.
The RO 400 for drinking water
The water produced by the RO 400 is excellent
drinking water. There is an installation package if the
water purifier is also going to be used for producing
drinking water, which includes a specially-adapted tap
for the RO 400, amongst other things. See
“Optional accessories and consumables”. If the
RO 400 is going to be used in this way, the following
important instructions should be followed:
Install any taps or such like directly after the water
purifier so that drinking water is produced when
the tap is opened, and is not kept or had any
additives added to it.
If using materials other than those supplied for the
installation work, use only corrosion-resistant
materials.
The control panel should be clearly visible from
where the drinking water is drawn off.
If the supply water is unsuitable you should have
the purified water checked after installation. You
should then have the purified water tested once a
year, or if there is any change in the water taste or
smell, in order to check that the water purifier is
still functioning properly. Do not drink the water
if the result is not satisfactory.
Only drink the water if the control panel shows
“purification level II or III”.
Do not use the water from the appliance in
aluminium saucepans etc., on account of the risk
of corrosion, which would also cause increased
levels of aluminium in foods cooked in the
saucepan.
52
You should read the section entitled “Safety Information” before starting work on the actual
installation of the water purifier.
INSTALLATION
B 1 2 3
AWhere to install the RO 400
This water purifier can be installed in several different ways.
No matter which method you choose, there are certain
points which you should be careful to observe:
The RO 400 weighs 33 kg. check that the load-bearing
surface is sufficiently sturdy.
Ensure that the RO 400 is installed in the upright
position, directly onto the load-bearing surface, without
any support or fixings.
The area where it is installed must have access to a cold
water supply, drainage and an easily-accessible earthed
electrical supply.
It must be easy to inspect the control panel on the
appliance.
There must be enough space for the front cover to be
opened and for good access to the filter containers.
When choosing the site, ensure that there will be
adequate ventilation all around the appliance. There
must be a gap of 20 mm between the sides of the
RO 400 and any adjacent fittings or walls. The
connection points of the RO 400 allow you to route
hoses and cables in any direction out from the
appliance. The dimensions required for the installation
site are 250 x 480 x 490 mm (W x D x H), see Fig. A.
When installing the appliance, make sure that none of
the service connections get crushed or otherwise
damaged.
Applying the information panel
In the box of accessories you will find a sheet of self-
adhesive information panels in several languages. Select the
language required and apply the printed panel in a visible
location, though without it concealing any important
information on the front panel.
Electrical and plumbing connections
The illustration reproduced in Fig. B is also to be found on
the rear of the appliance, and it shows how the various
connections should be made.
The RO 400 is connected to the cold water supply
(temperature range 2 - 30 °C) via a polyethylene feed hose
(3). The feed pipe should have an easily-accessible valve for
shutting off the supply, see Fig.
C on the next page. If the
appliance is being connected to new pipes or to pipes which
have been out of use for some time, the water should be
allowed to run for a while before connecting the hose. This
will prevent the appliance intake filter or the filters from
becoming blocked by sand or rust. The reject water is
53
INSTALLATION
C
connected directly to a waste pipe via the reject water hose
(2), while the purified water is led out via the solenoid valve
(1). When in use, the initial volume of water in each
operating cycle is led off to the reject water hose via an
airlock. After this the purified water then flows through the
solenoid valve to some other appliance or item of ancillary
equipment which needs purified water.
The water purifier must be connected to an earthed
electrical supply (230V, 50Hz, 10A). We recommend use of
a plug-in connection to a wall socket, since certain
procedures such as replacing filters, preparing the appliance
for storage and, if necessary, moving it require the power
supply to be disconnected, then reconnected. Make sure
that the plug-in connector is easily accessible in order to
make these manoeuvres easier.
Connecting the reject water hose
Two hoses must be connected to the reject water outlet.
The straight end of the grey reject water hose, see diagram
C (for concentrate during operation and for flushing
water), is connected to the reject water outlet.
The hose can be extended up to 4 metres. The smallest
internal diameter for coping with volumes of up to 10 litres
per minute is 13 mm. The hose must be fed in an arc to a
height of no less than 50 mm and no more than 500 mm
above the roof of the water purifier. Use one of the two
hose clips to secure the hose to a drain, for example, if
required.
One of the hoses (3/8”, 2m polythene hose) for purified
water, see fig. C (for the initial water in each operating
cycle) from the solenoid valve connector which points out
from the water purifier, must be fed to the reject water
outlet.
In order to ensure that micro-organisms (bacteria) from the
reject water outlet do not grow back up the hose to the
water purifier, connection must be via an airlock, see fig.
C.
Locate (screw on) the hose holder directly onto the reject
water outlet and feed the purified water hose through this,
creating an airlock of at least 50 mm between the end of
the hose and the reject water outlet.
Connecting the feed water hose
The straight end of the feed water hose must only be
connected to the cold water connector, see fig.
C. The
water connector must be fitted with a cut-off valve.
Before connection, check that the black washers are in place
where the hose is connected. If the 3/4” hose connection
does not fit, then this can be changed to 1/2” using the
adapter supplied.
Connecting the water purifier
Before moving the RO 400 into its permanent location,
remove the four thread-protection plugs from the water
purifier connectors, and the transit support from under the
filter container (fig.
D). Next connect up the four hoses as
shown in fig.
E:
1. Use a hose clip to secure the reject water hose’s bent end
to the connector in the centre of the water purifier.
2. Screw the bent end of the feed water hose onto the feed
water valve. Check first that the packing is in place in the
valve before screwing the hose tight. Open the cut-off
valve and check that the connection does not leak.
3. Connect the purified water hose (which is led off to the
reject water outlet via an airlock to the solenoid valve on
the purified water side) to the connector which points
outwards. Check that grommets are fitted in both ends
of the hose. Push the hose into bottom position, up to
the mark (about 17 mm), see fig.
E.
4. Connect the purified water hose to the solenoid valve
connector which points inwards (towards the reject
water hose connection). Check that grommets are fitted
in both ends of the hose. Push the hose into bottom
position, up to the mark (about 17 mm), see fig.
E.
Temporarily run the other end to the reject water outlet.
During the subsequent flushing procedure the purified
water will contain the preservative. This water may not be
run off to any other appliance or item of ancillary
equipment until the flushing and calibration procedures
have been carried out.
Put the plug into the wall socket. The machine will start
and run an automatic flushing procedure (for about
30 seconds). This flushing procedure is repeated every time
the machine is switched on. Unplug the applicance from
the mains, wait a minute, and then plug it in again so that
another flushing procedure is run.
The RO 400 must be connected to an earthed
wall socket.
The water may not be consumed until the
flushing procedure has been run and the RO 400
has been calibrated.
After the automatic flushing procedure the machine starts
up and produces water which is fed into the reject water
outlet, first through the ordinary hose fixed in the hose-
holder, and then through the other hose which is
temporarily fixed to the reject water outlet. Check that all
the connections are watertight. If a connection does leak,
unplug the appliance from the mains and take the
appropriate measures. When the appliance has been in
operation for about a week, tighten the connections for the
reject water and feed water hoses again.
54
E
INSTALLATION
D
Leaks outside the actual appliance cannot be
detected by its leakage protection system. Unless
specifically stated otherwise in these instructions,
the valve on the feed water supply pipe should be
left in the open position for the protection system
of the RO 400 to function.
The flushing procedure
You should work through the steps of the flushing
procedure when the RO 400:
is brand-new and has never been used before
is being brought back into use after having been stored
has been cleaned, to wash away the descaling agent
has been fitted with a new membrane
the appliance is used after having been disconnected for
a while without any preservative having been used.
No water from the appliance should be consumed
before or during the “Flushing procedure”.
First check:
- that the purified water hose is temporarily connected to
the reject water outlet
- that the water supply to the appliance is turned on
- that there are no leaks at all in the connections between
the domestic water supply and the appliance
- that the reject water and purified water hoses are
connected, with no leaks
- that the filter containers inside the appliance are properly
tightened
1 Unplug the appliance from the mains.
2 Plug the appliance in again. The RO 400 will now
switch automatically to flushing mode.
3 When it stops, unplug from the mains, wait a minute,
then plug it back in so that the appliance will repeat the
flushing cycle.
4 Repeat step 3, so the appliance completes a third
flushing cycle.
... then, if the appliance is brand-new, or if the
membrane has just been replaced:
5a Follow the calibration procedure described below.
... otherwise:
5b Leave the RO 400 to flush clean water into the reject
water outlet after the third automatic flushing
procedure. This happens automatically because there is
no other appliance or item of ancillary equipment
attached. Take the plug out after 10 minutes.
6 Repeat step 5b above.
The RO 400 will now be ready for use!
55
INSTALLATION
Calibration
The water purifier needs to be calibrated specifically for
your water supply, to ensure the correct purification level.
Calibration should only be carried out when:
the water purifier is new and has never been used before
the quality of the water supply has changed for some reason,
such as if you move the appliance to a different area.
the membrane has just been replaced
The water produced by the appliance during the
calibration procedure must not be consumed!
How to calibrate the water purifier:
1. After the third automatic flushing procedure, which
takes about 30 seconds, the RO 400 stops for a second
and then starts running purified water into the reject
water outlet. Once production has started, press the
calibration button within 10 seconds (see fig.
F) and
hold it in (about 3-5 seconds) until both lights for
“purification level I and II” go on for 1 second and
then go off. Only release the button when the “on/off”
light goes on.
If any of the Purification Level lights I-III stay on (lit),
then one of the steps has been carried out wrongly. See
“Trouble-shooting table” and start once more from
point 4, under “flushing procedure”.
2. Leave the RO 400 producing water for at least
10 minutes without interruption. The lights for
Purification Levels I and II will now come on for 1
second and then go out and the water quality level will
then be displayed by the light for Purification Level III
coming on and staying on, indicating the highest
purification level.
If the lights for Purification Levels I, II and III flash
intermittently, this means that calibration has not been
carried out properly. If so, start again from point 4
under “Flushing procedure” .
3. Unplug the appliance from the mains, wait for a minute
and then plug it back in. Unplug it again when the
automatic flushing procedure has finished.
The RO 400 is now ready to produce purified water.
Connect the hose, which had been temporarily connected
to the reject water outlet, to another appliance or item of
ancillary item of equipment.
56
INSTALLATION
F
Moving the RO 400
If you move the water purifier to a different location, you
should bear in mind the following points:
Shut the valve on the cold water supply pipe.
Disconnect the electrical plug from the socket.
Always transport the appliance in its normal upright
position .
To re-install it, follow the original installation
instructions, including the flushing procedure, in order
to flush out any old water.
The appliance will only need to be recalibrated if the
quality of the water supply has been changed, or if the
membrane has been replaced.
If the appliance is to be stored without being used
for 4 months or longer, or if it is to be
disconnected from the water and electricity
supplies for several days, it should be filled with
the special storage product (preservative). See the
section “Storage” on page 65.
57
INSTALLATION
58
USING THE RO 400
The RO 400 is a water purifier based on the reverse osmosis technique. This means that all
foreign substances are almost entirely removed - more than 99% in most cases. In a great many
industrial applications, there are strict requirements for a consistent and high level of water purity,
in order to guarantee function and to keep maintenance to a minimum.
Pure water also leads to a better finished product.
One area of application is in humidifying systems. Purified water minimises the risk of nozzles
furring up, and problems with calcium dust from the water being spread in the premises
disappear.
In addition, using water without any salt content gives a better humidifying result.
Below is a suggestion for how the complete installation might look. Note that tanks and valves
are not supplied with the water purifier.
feed water
purified water
reject water
purified water to the
reject water outlet
The basic principle
The purified water leaves the RO 400 at (A) and then goes
into the solenoid valve (B). The valve feeds the first volume
of water from each operating cycle into the reject water
outlet via an airlock ( C ), and after a set time it then feeds
the water to an air humidifying system, for example. The
airlock prevents bacteria from the reject water outlet getting
back up the hose into the water purifier. The reject water
from the water purifier runs out through the connector (E).
Cold water is plumbed in at (F). In certain cases this
application needs a pressure tank to be connected up to the
purified water from the RO 400 (G). This means that
operational times are longer when the RO 400 starts up,
which is an advantage. In order to take water samples, or
water for any other purposes, e.g. battery water, a ball valve
59
USING THE RO 400
(H) is connected from a branch connector on the hose
between the RO 400 and the tank. In order for the
RO 400 to start instead of the tank emptying, a non-return
valve (J) is inserted between the branch connector and the
tank. Fitting a ball valve on the other side of the tank allows
the tank to be drained.
After installation
Once the RO 400 has been installed and calibrated as in the
instructions in “Installation”, the water purifier can be used.
The RO 400 is fitted with an electronic control system
which makes it easier to operate:
The purified water quality at any one time is shown
continuously on the control panel
“purification level I” non-approved reduction efficiency
“purification level II” approved reduction efficiency
“purification level III” optimal reduction efficiency
The control panel indicates when it is time to change
the filter.
When it is time to clean the grid, this is indicated by the
control panel.
Built-in functions which extend the lifetime of the
membrane
Automatic flushing after every operational cycle for
rinsing out concentrates
Automatic flushing every 12 hours in order to replace
still water in the purifier
An automatic 2-minute flushing operation after
15 minutes of operational time. The next 15-minute
cycle is then started.
Other information
Descale the RO 400 according to the table in the section
on “Descaling” or in case of a reduced supply of purified
water.
Purified water production
The RO 400 starts producing purified water when a tap,
valve or a pressure tank releases the pressure in the purified
water hose (i.e. when the tap or valve is opened or when
the pressure in the tank falls) which is linked to the solenoid
valve pointing at the middle of the back of the RO 400.
Only use water from the RO 400 when it shows
purification level II or III. If the RO 400 has not been used
for a while, it can take up to 60 seconds before the correct
water quality is reached.
Adjusting the solenoid valve
The solenoid valve directs the initial volume of water from
each operational cycle, which is not of approved quality.
When the RO 400 is supplied the timer is set to 30 seconds,
which in practise might be too short or too long. Check
that the time has been adjusted correctly by measuring the
time in an operational cycle (once the RO 400 has stood
still for at least 6 hours) from the start until “purification
level II” is indicated on the panel. Adjust the timer as
required by means of the following instructions for use.
The timer is wired in parallel with the water supply valve
and it is activated when the water supply valve is operated
and opened. The timer can be set at four different functions
which are selected by setting rocker switches 4 and 5 to the
right setting. When using the RO 400 switch 4 is up and
switch 5 is down, which means that when the timer is
activated, the solenoid valve switches over straight away and
directs the purified water to the reject water outlet (when it
is at rest the valve switches to another appliance or ancillary
item of equipment).
Adjusting this function only selects the time that the
purified water is directed to the reject water outlet.
There are 8 time periods used for adjusting the time, which
are selected using switches 1, 2 and 3. For applications
using the RO 400 the time period of 1.5 - 30 seconds is
selected, i.e. switches 1 and 2 are down and switch 3 is up.
The factory setting is 30 seconds, which is set by turning
the screw on the left clockwise as far as it will go.

USING THE RO 400
Replacing the filters
It is important to replace the filters since their main
function is to protect the membrane. Check for any signs of
leaks just after you have replaced them and while the
appliance is running.
REPLACING FILTER
It is time to replace filter when the “filter I” indicator
is showing a constant yellow light during operation. First of
all eliminate any other possible faults using the trouble-
shooting table in the section entitled “If the RO 400 stops
working”.
1 Disconnect the electrical plug. Open the front cover (in
front of the two filter containers) using the grip, as
shown in the illustration, see fig.
A.
2 Use the filter spanner to undo the container marked .
Remember that the container will be full of water and
that some water may spill! See fig.
B. Lift out the filter
and discard it.
3 Clean the filter holder using a brush and water. See fig.
C.
4 Put the new filter in place, with the label pointing
upwards. Make sure that the sealing ring is in place in
the grooves of the filter container.
5 Refit and tighten the container using the filter spanner.
Tighten the filter container so that the dot is somewhere
between the two outermost white lines. See fig.
D.
6 Close the front cover and put the plug back in. The water
purifier will now automatically flush out. See fig.
E.
This completes the procedure for replacing filter ,
and the RO 400 is ready for use again.
(If the cause is filter and the water purifier is still
operated without changing the filter, the RO 400 will stop
working when the filter has become more blocked.)
REPLACING FILTER
It is time to replace filter when the “filter II” indicator
is on.
1-6Follow the 6 points in the instructions for replacing
filter , but this time undo filter , which is the
container on the right, and change the filter.
7 The water purifier must be connected to a wall socket
and must be at rest after flushing.
8 Set the built-in timer to zero by holding the “calibrate”
button in for about 5 seconds until the “filter II”
indicator goes out, see fig. F.
This completes the procedure for replacing filter ,
and the RO 400 is ready for use as usual.
(The built-in time meter monitors the efficiency of the carbon
filter, filter , with regard to operational time and ageing.)
The timer can only be zeroed when the front panel shows
“filter II” .
Set the water purifier’s counter to zero after changing filter
as in point 8.

Descaling
In time, the substances which the appliance removes from
your drinking water tend to clog the membrane and will
eventually reduce the flow of pure water from the tap. To
prolong the service life of the membrane, it has to be
descaled periodically.
If you notice that the flow rate from the tap is tending to
decrease, you will need to run the descaling procedure,
below. How often you will need to do this will depend on
your particular water supply, especially on its levels of
calcium and magnesium (“hardness”, see table, right), iron,
manganese and micro-organisms.
You cannot use the water purifier during the descaling
procedure, which lasts about 30 minutes.
The descaling procedure should be run when the flow
of purified water from the RO 400 is reduced.
If you do not notice any change, then run the descaling
procedure according to the table on the right.
You can order the descaling agent from your dealer (see
“Service and spare parts”)
(Even with regular descaling, the maximum flow of purified
water from the appliance will decrease gradually on account
of the normal properties of the membrane. When you
notice that the flow is about half of what it was when the
membrane was new, contact your dealer to have the
membrane replaced.)
The descaling product must be kept out of the
reach of children.
Wash your hands after use.
1 Mix 200 grams (roughly 250 ml) of the descaling agent
with 2 litres lukewarm water in a bucket. Stir until the
powder has dissolved, see Fig.
A.
2 Unplug the appliance from the mains. Remove filter
and filter from the filter holders as in “replacing the
filter”, points 2-5, and screw the empty holders back on
again. (Do not throw away the filters as they can be re-
used), see fig.
B.
3 Allow the purified water from the RO 400 to be flushed
away down the reject water outlet for the first
10 minutes of the operating cycle by loosening the
purified water hose from any other appliance or item of
ancillary equipment, and running it into the reject water
outlet via the airlock, see fig.
C on the next page.
Water containing the descaling agent will be
produced. This water may not be fed into any
ancillary equipment or any other appliance.

4 Close the shut-off valve at the water connection. Undo
the feed hose from the feed water connection and the
reject water hose from the reject water outlet, see fig
C.
5 Put the ends of both the reject water and feed water
hoses in the bucket. Make sure they are both below the
surface throughout the descaling procedure, see fig.
C.
6 Plug the appliance back in and leave the water purifier
to flush out automatically. Unplug it again after
approximately 30 seconds. (During the flushing
procedure the RO 400 sucks the solution up from the
bucket. The volume in the bucket is reduced by the
same volume of liquid as was in the filter holders, but it
does not entirely disappear).
7 Wait 1 minute then repeat step 6.
8 This time leave the agent to work for 2 minutes, then
repeat step 6 again.
9 Wait for 2 minutes and then repeat step 6.
10 Reconnect the feed water hose to the water connection
and the reject water hose to the reject water outlet, see
fig.
D.
11 Plug the appliance back in and leave the water purifier
to go through a complete automatic flushing procedure.
Leave the RO 400 running purified water into the reject
water outlet for about 10 minutes and then unplug the
appliance.
12 Wait for one minute, then plug the appliance back in and
leave the water purifier to complete a full automatic flush
cycle. Leave the RO 400 to run pourified water into the
reject water outlet for about 10 minutes and then unplug
the appliance.
Put the equipment back as it was and reconnect the purified
water hose to another appliance or item of ancillary
equipment.
The descaling procedure is now complete. The RO 400
is ready for normal use.
Disinfection
If the appliance has been disconnected from the water and
electricity supplies for a period of time (several days), there
may be a build-up of micro-organisms on the membrane
and the water might develop a certain odour. If this is the
case, it is appropriate to perform disinfection and replace
the filter.
The disinfectant, which contains the active ingredient
sodium hypochlorite, can be bought from supermarkets or
from the chemist. The disinfectant must be odourless.
1 Unplug the appliance.
2 Set up the RO 400 so that the purified water from the
appliance can be flushed into the reject water outlet for
the first 10 minutes of the operating cycle, for example
by undoing the purified water hose from another
appliance or item of ancillary equipment and feeding it
into the reject water outlet via an airlock. Connect a
manual valve onto the purified water hose to control the
RO 400.
Water will be produced which contains the
disinfectant. This water must not be fed into any
other appliance or item of ancillary equipment.
3 Plug the RO 400 back in at the mains so that it can run
an automatic flushing procedure. Stop the RO 400 by
shutting off the purified water supply using the manual
valve on the purified water hose.
4 Undo filter container as described in “Replacing the
filters”, steps 2-5, and remove filter . (Filter must
be discarded.)
5 Fill the container three-quarters full of lukewarm water,
add 25 ml of the disinfectant at a concentration of 3.5%
and stir. (If the concentration is not 3.5%, adjust the
amount of the disinfectant according to the
concentration, see fig.
E)
6 Screw the container (containing the solution) back onto
the appliance.
7 Open the manual valve to start the RO 400 and leave it
to produce purified water for 45 seconds.
8
Unplug the appliance after 45 seconds, without first
shutting off the valve.
9 Leave the water purifier stationary and allow the agent
to work for 30 minutes. During this time, install a new
filter in the filter holder and a new filter in
the filter holder , as described in steps 2-7 of
“Replacing the filters”. See fig.
F.
10 Turn off the tap, plug the appliance in and leave it to
flush out automatically. Perform a complete flushing
procedure as described in “Flushing”.
64
MAINTENANCE

11 If there is any odour left from the cleaning agent, open
the tap and allow it to produce water until the odour
has disappeared.
12 Reassemble the equipment and reconnect the purified
water hose to another appliance or item of ancillary
equipment.
The disinfection procedure is now complete and the
RO 400 is ready for regular use.
Cleaning the grid
The grid (a coarse filter) filters out large particles and is
located in the connection for the feed water on the
appliance. If the “filter I” indicator light shows that filter
is blocked or that the intake pressure is too low, the reason
may be that the grid is clogged.
1 Disconnect the appliance from the electrical supply.
2 Close the valve on the water supply pipe.
3 Undo the feed water hose connector on the back of the
appliance.
4 Using pliers or similar, grip and remove the grid, as
shown in fig.
G.
5 Clean and rinse out the grid before putting it back
inside the connector (with the tongue for the pliers
facing outwards), see fig.
G.
6 Reconnect the feed water hose to the appliance.
7 Open the valve on the cold water supply pipe and check
that there are no leaks.
8 Plug the appliance back in at the mains and it will flush
automatically.
Storage
If the RO 400 is not going to be used for a period of more
than four months, or if it is going to be disconnected from
the water and electricity mains supplies for quite a long time
(several days) it needs to be filled with a preserving agent.
The preservative can be ordered from your dealer (see
“Service and spare parts”).
This product must be kept out of the reach of
children.
Wash your hands after use!
1 Unplug the appliance from the mains.
2 Mix 2 litres of the preservative agent and 4 litres of
water in a bucket, see fig.
H.
3 Undo both filter containers as described in “Replacing
the filters”, steps 3-6. Remove the two filter inserts and
discard them (should not be kept for re-use). Empty the
water from the containers, see fig.
I overleaf.
4 Put the empty filter containers back in their normal places
and tighten them. Make sure that each sealing ring is in
place in the groove on the top edge of each container.
