Use this guide to:
Get familiar with your phone

Power key ( ) Press and hold to turn phone on or off. Press and release to switch
between profiles.
Volume keys In the open or closed position, press up to increase the volume or down to
decrease the volume.
Infrared port Aim this port at the infrared port on your PC for data synchronization.
Mini display View the clock, caller ID, active profile, and other information without
opening your phone.
Integrated camera/camcorder
In the open position, take photos and record video clips.
Five-way scroll key
From the Start screen, press:
Up to access the camera
Down to access your contacts
Left to access the notepad
Right to access Push-to-Talk (PTT) groups
Center to access the menu and highlighted submenu items
Left and right selection keys
Press to access the option shown above the key.
From the Start screen, press the:
Left selection key to access the Go to menu, allowing
quick access to key features
Right selection key to open your contacts list
Talk and End keys
( ) Press the Talk key to make a call or answer an incoming call
( ) Press the End key to end a call, or press and hold to return to the Start screen
SIM card
Your Nokia 6170 phone uses a convenient
SIM card that provides access to your
wireless service. A SIM card allows you to
switch between Nokia phones and keep
your number and phone book with you.
Install the SIM card and battery
1. With the back of the phone facing you, press
the locking catch and remove the back cover.
2. Lift the metal SIM cover (fig. 2.1).
3. Place the SIM card into the slot, metal
contacts down (fig. 2.2).
4. Close the metal cover and snap it into
place (fig. 2.3).
5. Insert the battery by matching the gold
contacts on the battery to the gold contacts in
the battery slot (fig. 2.4).
Capture the moment
No matter where you may find yourself, capturing those impromptu moments
is simple with your Nokia 6170 phone. Its built-in camera and video recorder
allow you to use your phone to take pictures and shoot small video clips,
using the colorful internal display as the viewfinder. Follow the steps below to
learn how to take pictures and record video.
Take a picture
1. From the Start screen, scroll up to activate the camera shortcut.
2. Aim the viewfinder at your subject and press Capture (fig. 3.1).
The photo is saved in the Images folder of the Gallery.
3. To take another photo, press Back.
To see a list of options, including sending the picture or setting as
wallpaper, press Options
.
Record a video
1. From the Start screen, scroll up to activate the camera shortcut.
2. Press Options
.
3. Select Change mode (fig. 3.2).
4. Scroll to and select Video (fig. 3.3).
5. Aim the viewfinder at your subject and press Record.
Note: Maximum length of a video clip is 4 minutes.
6. Select Stop.
The video clip is saved in the Video clips folder of the Gallery.
7. To play back the clip, select Play (fig. 3.4).

Share your vision!

The Nokia 6170 phone lets you easily share your pictures and video with
friends and family – as soon as you take them! When you send a
multimedia message (MMS), you can include your picture or video, as
well as a written message. Follow the steps below to share your vision.
Sending a multimedia message (MMS)
1. Take a picture or record a video clip as shown in the previous section.
2. Press Options
.
3. Scroll to and select Send (fig. 4.1).
4. With Via multimedia highlighted, press Select (fig. 4.2).
5. The image or video is added to an outgoing message. Enter any text
message you would like to include in the MMS message (fig. 4.3).
6. Press Send
.
7. To send the message to another phone, select Phone number.
(You can also send the message to an email address by selecting
E-mail address.)
8. Enter the phone number or retrieve one from the phone book and
press OK
.
9. Message saved to outbox for sending appears.
10. You receive confirmation that your message was sent.

The sophisticated Nokia 6170 phone delivers advanced Personal Information
Management (PIM) features to help you manage your life. Balance business
and personal life with the integrated calendar, notes, to-do list, and phone
book. Keep everything up to date by synchronizing your Nokia 6170 phone
with a compatible PC via data cable (sold separately) or infrared. Follow the
steps below to learn how to synchronize with Nokia PC Suite.
1. If you’re using a data cable (fig. 5.1), check the label to verify the cable
model number and install the corresponding data cable software drivers
available at
www.nokiausa.com/phones/software. Note: Install the
software drivers before attempting to connect the cable to your PC.
2. Download and install Nokia PC Suite software available free at
www.nokiausa.com. (You may be prompted to re-boot your PC.)
3. Connect your Nokia 6170 phone to your compatible PC using the data
cable or aim the infrared port on your phone at the infrared port on the
PC. Refer to your User Guide for more information about connecting
via infrared.
4. Launch the Nokia PC Sync application. You can find step-by-step
instructions for using the application in the help function of Nokia PC Suite.
Wireless modem feature
Your Nokia 6170 phone can act as a wireless modem for your PC. When you
need to get work done on the road, connect your Nokia 6170 phone to your
laptop using the data cable or infrared and dial your internet service provider
(charges may apply). To access this feature, install the free modem drivers
available at
www.nokiausa.com/phones/software.

Downloadable Ringtones
Have a favorite song that you just can’t get enough of? Chances are it’s available
for download as an MP3 from your wireless provider. With your Nokia 6170 phone
you can purchase and download the MP3 and use it as your ringtone!
Set your ringtone to a downloaded tone or MP3
1. Press Menu.
2. Scroll to Settings and press Select.
3. Scroll to Tone settings and press Select
4. Scroll to Ringing tone and press Select (fig. 6.1).
5. Scroll to Open Gallery and press Select
.
6. Scroll to Tones and press Open (fig. 6.2).
7. Highlight the desired tone and press Open
.
8. Press Options
.
9. With Set as ring tone highlighted, press Select (fig. 6.3).
Downloadable Applications and Games
Your Nokia 6170 phone comes with a world clock and translator. World Clock II
helps you determine the current time in any part of the world. Translator
(fig. 6.4) provides quick word translation between English, Spanish, French, and
Portuguese. Your Nokia 6170 phone also comes with pre-installed games and the
ability to purchase and download many more.
Mobile Web
EDGE connectivity brings the web to your Nokia 6170 phone with speeds up to
236.8 Kbits/sec. Check with your service provider for availability.
