Readying your Lionel Hudson for operation
T
o operate your Lionel Hudson,
place it on Lionel or Lionel-compat-
ible O gauge
three-rail track.
Make sure
wheels proper-
ly rest on the
railhead. Note
the magnetic
pull of the
wheels to steel
rail. That’s
Magne-Trac-
tion®, Lionel’s
legendary
patented feature that uses magnetized
wheels and axles to increase pulling
power (more than 20 cars on straight
and level track!) and to help keep the
locomotive on track when it passes
swiftly through curves.
Your Hudson is designed to operate
on 7-18 volts alternating current.
Virtually all Lionel alternating-current
transformers are suitable; we recom-
mend the Lionel TrainMaster Com-
mand model railroad control system.
With track
power OFF, con-
nect the locomo-
tive pigtail to its
tender counter-
part. The ex-
posed-metal
sides of both
plugs will mate
when properly
connected. Feed
excess wire into
the tender and
connect the drawbars. You’re ready to run.
DO NOT power your
Hudson with direct current
(DC). Damage may occur.
The Hudson will operate
independently of its tender
(without sound).
Connect the locomotive pigtail to its tender coun-
terpart. Feed excess wire into the tender and con-
nect the two drawbars. You’re ready to run.
A note on Magne-Traction®
Y
our Hudson features Lionel Magne-
Traction, magnetized drive wheels
and axles that help increase tractive
effort during operation. Because the
drive wheels are magnetized, take care
to prevent small metallic objects from
attaching to them and working their
way into the Hudson’s motor assembly.
They can damage your locomotive.
Magne-Traction is not effec-
tive on nonferrous track.

Using your Hudson’s magnetic tender coupler
Y
our Hudson is equipped with a
magnetic die-cast knuckle coupler, a
revolutionary design first introduced
by Lionel in 1950.
Lionel magnetic couplers react to the
magnetic field generated by a Lionel
UCS remote-control track section (sold
separately). Place the coupler’s “trigger
disc” over the UCS’ coil and press
Uncouple on the UCS controller. The
magnetic field pulls the disc downward,
and the knuckle opens.
S
tart by applying power to the track.
The Hudson will wait 10 seconds as
it analyzes your railroad for the presence
of a Command Base. Then, when it
determines it’s on a conventional rail-
road, the Hudson’s light illuminates and
Railsounds II starts up. This occurs
when placing the Hudson on your rail-
road for the first time. Thereafter, the
Hudson starts in forward after every
three-second power interrupt.
To get your Hudson into action, press
the DIR button on your CAB-1 remote
or Lionel transformer. The Liontech
Command reverse unit (or LCRU)
inside your Hudson “sequences” to the
next operating state. The LCRU alter-
nates between four states: forward, neu-
tral, reverse, neutral.
To select a single operational state
(for example, forward), you can deacti-
vate the LCRU’s sequencing function.
Get your locomotive moving in the
desired direction, then stop it by pow-
ering down the track. Set the LCRU
switch inside the locomotive’s cab to
PROGRAM/LOCK.
As with any conventional locomo-
tive, control your Hudson’s speed by
adjusting the amount of power applied
to your track. Have fun!

Your Hudson’s Railsounds IITM system—the basics
L
ionel Railsounds II is the most realistic
model railroad sound system in the
world. Your Hudson features digital sam-
ples from a
real-life Hud-
son for the ulti-
mate in realism.
Begin by
installing a 9-
volt alkaline bat-
tery. This en-
sures full-fea-
ture operation
of Railsounds
II. Remove the
screws located
in each corner
of the tender
frame. Lift the
rear of the tender shell first, then the remain-
der. Use care with the volume control wires
when setting the tender shell aside.
Connect the 9-volt alkaline battery to
the lead and insert it in the retaining clip.
Please do not touch the Railsounds II compo-
nent. It’s sensitive to the static electricity
transferred by touch. When finished, rein-
stall the shell with the four screws.
Although Railsounds II is
powered by track volt-
age, the battery is required
for uninterrupted opera-
tion. Use only alkaline
batteries.
When you first apply
track power, the Hudson’s Railsounds
II system produces sounds of the loco-
motive at rest. As the Hudson moves,
chuffing
begins, increas-
ing with the
locomotive’s
speed.
To silence
steam chuffing
(whistle/bell
are unaffected),
slide the Rail-
sounds II switch
on the tender’s
underside to the
“off” position
before powering
up the locomotive.
Discontinue locomotive
power for 10 seconds before
changing the Railsounds II
on/off switch position.
If Railsounds II “drops out”
during track power inter-
rupts (direction change),
replace the battery.
Installing an alkaline 9-volt battery in your Hudson.
Remove the four corner screws underneath the ten-
der. Lift the REAR of the shell first, then the remainder.

W
ith Railsounds II, you experience
the sounds of real railroading like
never before. Simply put, it’s the most
sophisticated, authentic model railroad
sound system in the world.
Variable chuff rate. Your Hudson’s
speed determines the steam chuff rate.
MultiWhistleTM. Different whistles
every time—a Railsounds II exclusive.
Authentic bell. Press BELL on your
CAB-1 or transformer to begin the
effect, again to discontinue. Even the
final “hit” is muted like the real thing.
Reverse unit reset sound. Power
down your track, wait for 3.5 seconds,
and listen for the air-release sound—
that’s the Hudson telling you its
Liontech Command reverse unit has
just reset to forward operation.
Shutdown sequence. No other
model railroad sound system shuts
down like Railsounds II. Turn off track
power, and after the air-release reset
sound, you have 2 seconds to restart
your Hudson. If you’re done with oper-
ations, Railsounds II will commence
with an authentic Hudson shutdown
sequence about two seconds after the
air-release reset occurs.
Experiencing the range of your Hudson’s Railsounds II system
Notes on Railsounds II
• Use the tender-top “water hatch” vol-
ume control to adjust sound output.
Listen for incidental engine sounds
during Railsounds II operation. They’re
automatic and, of course, authentic.
• The 9-volt alkaline battery you installed
ensures continuous Hudson sounds, even
during short track-power interrupts.
Longer track-power interruptions
(including locomotive derailments)
cause Railsounds II to shut down after
about 7 seconds.
• For even more authentic Railsounds II
effects, operate your Hudson in the
TrainMaster Command environment.
See page 9 for details.

The command control environment
L
ionel TrainMaster Command is the
advanced model railroad control sys-
tem from Lionel Trains and Liontech.
Your Hudson is outfitted with the
Liontech Command reverse unit, a
microcomputer that holds the key to
total model locomotive control.
TrainMaster Command gives you the
power to operate multiple Command-
equipped locomotives on the same track,
at the same time, simply by installing a
single TrainMaster Command Base and
using the CAB-1 remote to operate
Command-equipped Lionels like your
Hudson. Find both components at your
Lionel dealer.
The Command Base places digital com-
munication—computer language—onto
your track. Command-equipped locomo-
tives like your Hudson “hear” the commu-
nication and listen for their “name” (or
ID#). When a locomotive hears its ID#, it
responds. Choose your CAB-1 command.
Your Command-equipped Hudson really
is at your command.
Individualized ID#s are the key to
operating multiple trains simultaneous-
ly on the same track. Address each loco-
motive by its ID#, get it going, then add
as many Command-equipped Lionels as
your power supplies can handle. It’s
true multi-locomotive operation on a
single block of track. Digital communi-
cation—and not track voltage—control a
Command-equipped Lionel.
Your Command-equipped Hudson is
factory-prepared to take advantage of
this new technology. Install a Command
Base, place your Hudson on track, grab
your CAB-1, and follow this section’s
instructions. Suddenly, the world of
Lionel TrainMaster Command is yours.

Tuning your Hudson’s performance
MOMENTUM
Simulate the labored performance of
a locomotive pulling a heavy load with
momentum. Press L, M, or H (located
under CAB-1’s removable panel) for
light, medium, or heavy momentum.
The LCRU remembers the setting until
you change it. For delayed response,
use H. For quick response, choose L.
BOOSTING AND BRAKING
Use the BOOST and BRAKE com-
mand buttons for incremental control
of speed and a superior method for han-
dling grades, stops-and-starts, and
more. Plus, using BRAKE in the
Command environment gives you a
bonus Railsounds II effect—the ultra-
realistic sound of squealing brakes.
STALL
Make your Hudson feel more
responsive by setting a “stall” voltage.
Get your locomotive moving, then
press SET; the Hudson will stop. Turn
the throttle clockwise to get the engine
moving, then decrease speed until the
locomotive just stops. Then press SET
again; the LCRU remembers the stall
setting until you change it. To clear stall,
press SET twice, holding it for one sec-
ond each time.
SOUND QUALITY
To achieve your preferred Rail-
sounds II master volume level, use
the tender-top water-hatch volume
control dial. Turn the dial left or right
to adjust the volume to your liking.
For quick remote-control of volume
below the master setting—like mut-
ing—use the CAB-1 numeric keypad’s
volume control. Pressing AUX1 and
then 4 on the numeric keypad lowers
overall Railsounds II output.
Maintaining your Hudson’s handrail-antenna
Y
our Hudson’s handrails are more than
just model grabirons—they’re the
LCRU’s receiving antenna for Com-mand
Base digital communications. Please handle
the Hudson carefully to avoid handrail dam-
age. To ensure optimum reception, both
handrails are insulated from the
Hudson’s die-cast shell. If your Hudson is
experiencing difficulty in receiving Base
communications, check the handrail ends
in the cab and pilot for the presence of
insulating material. Ensure each stan-
chion is present and enjoys a proper fit.
Finally, prevent the handrails from touch-
ing the steamchest/boiler front between
the last stanchion and the pilot.

elp your Lionel Hudson lead a long
and productive life on your rail-
road by maintaining it properly.
We recommend you pur-
chase a Lionel Lubrication
and Maintenance Kit (no.
6-62927), available from
your Lionel dealer. Two
basic rules to keep in
mind: never over-lubri-
cate (a small amount will
do), and avoid getting
grease or oil on the
Hudson’s wheels or
your track.
You’ll know your Hudson requires
lubrication when visual in-spection
reveals dryness on the parts
indicated in the illustra-
tion. Remove accumulated
dirt and dust before lubri-
cating, and always lubri-
cate any locomotive
emerging from prolonged
storage. Also, lightly lubri-
cate the Hudson’s side
rods after each 50 hours
of operation.

end located on the opposite side of the locomotive.
Adding fluid to your Hudson’s smoke generator
Y
our Hudson is equipped with a
smoke generator that produces safe,
clean white smoke during operation.
The smoke generator requires the
periodic addition of Lionel smoke fluid
in order to function. Pierce the tube end
with a pin, then add four to eight drops
of fluid directly into the Hudson’s
stack. Smoke production commences
momentarily, faster if you run your
Hudson at speed. When smoke produc-
tion wanes, add more fluid (four to
eight drops). An idle Hudson will not
smoke; press AUX1 and 9 to engage the
smoke generator at idle/in neutral.
Always keep a small amount of smoke
fluid in the Hudson’s smoke generator;
the generator’s element can become
damaged if operated without fluid.
Smoke production is greater at high-
er voltages and when the Hudson is
pulling a heavy load or long consist.

Replacing your Hudson’s lamp
Y
our Hudson is illuminated by a 14-volt
lamp located directly behind the boil-
erface. During the course of normal opera-
tion, the lamp
may require
replacement.
Carefully
