WARNING
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose
the unit to rain or moisture.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the
cabinet. Refer servicing to qualified personnel
only.
Mains lead must only be changed at a qualified
service shop.
Precautions
Safety
This unit operates on 110 – 240 V AC, 50/60
Hz. Check that the unit’s operating voltage
is identical with your local power supply.
If anything falls into the cabinet, unplug the
unit and have it checked by qualified
personnel before operating it any further.
The unit is not disconnected from the mains
as long as it is connected to the mains, even
if the unit itself has been turned off.
Unplug the unit from the mains if you do
not intend to use it for an extended period of
time. To disconnect the lead, pull it out by
the plug, never by the lead.
Installing
Allow adequate air circulation to prevent
internal heat buildup.
Do not place the unit on surfaces (rugs,
blankets, etc.) or near materials (curtains,
draperies) that may block the ventilation
slots.
Do not install the unit near heat sources
such as radiators or air ducts, or in a place
subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust,
mechanical vibration or shock.
Do not install the unit in an inclined
position. It is designed to be operated in a
horizontal position only.
Keep the unit and cassettes away from
equipment with strong magnets, such as
microwave ovens or large loudspeakers.
Do not place heavy objects on the unit.
If the unit is brought directly from a cold to
a warm location, moisture may condense
inside the VCR and cause damage to the
video head and tape. When you first install
the unit, or when you move it from a cold to
a warm location, wait for about three hours
before operating the unit.
Caution
Television programmes, films, video tapes and
other materials may be copyrighted.
Unauthorized recording of such material may
be contrary to the provisions of the copyright
laws. Also, use of this recorder with cable
television transmission may require
authorization from the cable television
transmitter and/or programme owner.
Compatible colour systems
This VCR is designed to record and play back
using the PAL (B/G, D/K, and I), MESECAM
(B/G and D/K), or NTSC (M) colour systems.
Recording of video sources based on other
colour systems cannot be guaranteed.
About colour systems
Different countries use different colour
systems and TV systems. These systems
handle such things as video playback and
recording differently. Using your VCR in a
country that is on a colour system not
supported by this VCR may cause problems
such as playback without sound, a vertically
rolling picture, etc.
This VCR is compatible with most of the
existing colour systems (NTSC, PAL, and
MESECAM) and TV systems (B/G, D/K, I,
and M) except for those used in France, Brazil,
Argentina, and Uruguay.

Controlling other TVs with the remote commander
The remote commander is preprogrammed to control non-Sony TVs. If your
TV is listed in the table below, set the appropriate manufacturers code
number.
1 Set TV / VIDEO at the top of the remote commander to TV .
2 Hold down I/u, and enter your TVs code number(s) using the
programme number buttons. Then release I/u.
Now you can use the following TV control buttons to control your TV:
I/u, TV/VIDEO, programme number buttons, ? (tens digit), PROG
+/, VOL +/, and WIDE with some TV.
Tip
If you set your TVs code number correctly while the TV is turned on, the TV turns
off automatically.
Step 2 : Setting up the remote commander (continued)
Notes
The TV/VIDEO button selects the input source of the TV from aerial in or line in.
The button does not control this VCR.
With normal use, the batteries should last about three to six months.
If you do not use the remote commander for an extended period of time, remove
the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage.
Do not use a new battery with an old one together.
Do not use different types of batteries together.
Some buttons may not work with certain Sony TVs.

you find the one that works with your TV.
To make wide mode settings, see the footnotes below this table for the
applicable code numbers.
*
1
Press WIDE to switch the wide picture mode on or off.
*
2
Press WIDE, then press VOL +/ to select the wide picture mode you want.
*
3
Press WIDE. The menu appears on the TV screen. Then, press
CURSOR >/./?// to select the wide picture you want and press OK.
Notes
If the TV uses a different remote control system from the one programmed to work
with the VCR, you cannot control your TV with the remote commander.
You may not be able to use some buttons to control non-Sony TVs due to the remote
commanders signal limitations.
If you enter a new code number, the code number previously entered will be erased.
When you replace the batteries of the remote commander, the code number
automatically resets to 01 (Sony). Reset the appropriate code number.

recommend you connect the VCR and TV using the audio/video cable (see
To a TV that has audio/video input jacks on page 9). If the same symptom
persists, consult your nearest Sony service facility.
Note

Presetting channels
First, we recommend that you preset the receivable channels in your area
using the One Touch Tuning function. If the One Touch Tuning function
could not preset the channels correctly, you can preset them automatically
using the menu. Then, if some channels could not be preset automatically,
set them manually; if there are any unwanted channels among the preset
ones, you can disable the channels.
If you live in the area where various TV systems coexist, and have channels
that don’t match the TV system you selected in automatic presetting, reset
the TV system for those channels (see “Resetting the TV system” on page
20). If the channels don’t match the TV system, the sound may be distorted
or noisy, or the colour TV programme may become black and white, etc.
Presetting all receivable
channels using the One
Touch Tuning function
Step 6
Press ONE TOUCH TUNING on the VCR for more than three
seconds.
The VCR starts channel presetting, and “NOW TUNING, PLEASE
WAIT” appears in the display window. When presetting all of the
receivable channels is complete, the message disappears.
To check if the channels are preset correctly
Set the TV to the video channel and press PROGRAM +/– on the VCR. If
the TV screen changes to a different programme each time you press
PROGRAM +/–, the channels are preset correctly.
If the sound is distorted or noisy, the TV system may not be set correctly.
Select the correct TV system and preset channels using the TUNER PRESET
menu on the next page.
Tip
To stop the One Touch Tuning function, press ONE TOUCH TUNING or p STOP
on the VCR during the setting.
Note
If you operate another feature while presetting channels, the setting may be
cancelled.
