Warning
Switch off the system prior to working on bus modules!
In the event of deformed contacts, the module in question is to be replaced, as
its functionality can no longer be ensured on a long-term basis.
The components are not resistant against materials having seeping and insu-
lating properties. Belonging to this group of materials is: e.g. aerosols, sili-
cones, triglycerides (found in some hand creams).
If it cannot be ruled out that these materials appear in the component envi-
ronment, then additional measures are to be taken:
- installation of the components into an appropriate enclosure
- handling of the components only with clean tools and materials.
Attention
Cleaning of soiled contacts may only be done with ethyl alcohol and leather
cloths. Thereby, the ESD information is to be regarded.
Do not use any contact spray. The spray may impair the functioning of the
contact area.
The WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 and its components are an open system. It
must only be assembled in housings, cabinets or in electrical operation
rooms. Access must only be given via a key or tool to authorized qualified
personnel.
The relevant valid and applicable standards and guidelines concerning the
installation of switch boxes are to be observed.
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge)
The modules are equipped with electronic components that may be destroyed
by electrostatic discharge. When handling the modules, ensure that the envi-
ronment (persons, workplace and packing) is well grounded. Avoid touching
conductive components, e.g. gold contacts.
1.5 Scope
This manual describes the Special Module 750-635 Digital Impulse Interface
of the modular WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750.
Handling, assembly and start-up are described in the manual of the Fieldbus
Coupler. Therefore this documentation is valid only in the connection with the
appropriate manual.

2.1.1.2 Description
The digital impulse interface is designed for the connection of magneto-
strictive distance sensor. Fast and fail-safe signal transmission is guaranteed
by the RS422 interface.
Once a start pulse has been received, the magneto-strictive sensor will return
the echo(s) of this pulse to the input module via the RS422 interface. In the
sensor, a pulse extends towards the end of the rod which is energized by the
position marker (magnets) and transformed into a stop signal in the sensor e-
lectronics. The time between the start pulse echo and the stop pulse is measu-
red and made available to the controls in a 24 bit value, whereby the measured
time is proportional to the distance.
At the time of start-up of the interface, the waveguide velocity of the distance
sensor in the control program has to be taken into consideration to be able to
parameterize the digital impulse interface accordingly following a voltage fai-
lure. The controls can perform an adjustment of the zero point and of the num-
ber of position markers.

Attention
This module has no power contacts for ground (earth). For field supply with
ground (earth) to downstream I/O modules, a supply module will be needed.
The module can be used with all couplers/controllers of the
WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 (except for the economy types 750-320, -323, -324
and -327).

2.1.1.6.2 Block Diagram of the I/O Module
The following block-diagram should clarify the internal function of the I/O
module. Cyclical start-impulses are initiated by the ASIC and, depending on
the number of positioners, the stop-impulses from the sensor are processed.
The sensor-specific velocity of the waveguide is taken into consideration. It is
the task of the µController to trigger the measuring cycle and to poll the meas-
uring data from the multiplexer. The following digital filter decreases the noi-
se and a zero unit enables measuring of relative position values if necessary.
Data-exchange with the PLC is handled via the RAM which contains 3 byte of
data and 1 byte for status and control.

As an alternative to the represented sensor connection, the shielded part of the
cable can be fixed by WAGO’s 790 series shield (screen) clamping saddles.
2.1.1.6.4 Voltage Supply
The bus module gets a voltage supply of 24V (-15% / +20%) via the power
jumper contacts. The distance sensor can be directly supplied with the 24V
voltage of the module. It should be taken into account whether the voltage
supply is restricted by other technical data.
Note
As the precision of the distance sensors depends in certain limits on the sta-
bility of the voltage supply a regulated high-capacity power supply unit
should be used to supply the bus node and the field side or a separation of the
voltage supply between actuators and sensors should be provided.
2.1.1.7 Process Image
This I/O module is represented with 4 bytes in the input process image and al-
so with 4 bytes in the output process image. The transfer of the data to be
transmitted and the received data is made via 3 output and 3 input bytes (D0 ...
D2). 1 Control byte (C) and 1 Status byte (S) are used to control the floating
data.

Setting and Selection of Positioners
Because the I/O module allows up to 4 positioners at the sensor, in case of
more than one positioner is being used, it is necessary to:
set the no. of positioners during initialization of the I/O module
select a positioner for the measuring cycle
Setting the No. of Positioners (Initialization)
The setting of no. of positioners installed at the sensor has to be processed by
the PLC during initialization via bits 4 and 5 of the control-byte (see table 3
and 4). The adjusted no. of positioners will be stored in the RAM if bit 1 is set
to high.
Selection of a Positioner (Measuring Cycle)
During operation up to 4 different values from the positioners could be calcu-
lated in series. To request a specific positioner, bits 4 and 5 from the control-
byte have to be set.

2.1.1.8 Application / Start-up
2.1.1.8.1 Setting the Waveguide Speed
Each application of this bus module requires a specific setting, knowing that
each distance sensor operates at a different waveguide velocity of the sensor.
This velocity is set by means of the process data communication with the con-
trol byte and the bus module input bytes. The waveguide velocity can be set as
a decimal value in the range of 0.00 to 3000.00 m/s, the resolution amounting
to 0.01 m/s. This setting is stored in the module operating memory as a non
power failure safe value, and must, therefore, be reloaded into the module by
the controls following each voltage failure (by switching off the bus coupler or
disconnecting modules). The default velocity setting is 0.00 m/s. This status is
signaled by the module’s error LED as well as by bit 6 of the status byte.
The velocity is activated by setting the output bytes to the sensor specific va-
lue, followed by the setting of control bit 2. The feedback of a successful
speed setting is ensured by the set bit 2 of the status byte.

Note
Following a supply voltage failure at the bus coupler, ensure by a correspond-
ing initialization of the bus module that the waveguide velocity setting is re-
instated. The red error LED and a “High” signal of status bit 6 signal the
status “waveguide velocity not set”.
2.1.1.8.2 Zero Point Setting
A zero point setting is also possible by means of the process data communica-
tion. The absolute measured value of the distance sensor is adopted into the
zero point register by the rising edge of bit 3 of the control byte. The zero
point setting is stored in the operating memory of the module as a non power
failure safe value. The feedback of a successful speed setting is ensured by the
set bit 3 of the status byte.
Note
As an alternative to the internal zero point storage, the relative measured va-
lue calculation can also be made by a POU in the controls. We strongly rec-
ommend the latter way if a bus coupler initialization is not guaranteed fol-
lowing a supply voltage failure, or if a reference to the zero point setting is
not possible. Please also refer to chapter 2.1.1.8.4.
2.1.1.8.3 Error Acknowledgement
Errors are signaled with the set bit 6 of the status byte and displayed by the er-
ror LED.
An error is acknowledged automatically following the remedy of the error or
by setting bit 0 in the status byte.
