Intended Use
- Measuring and displaying electrical values in the range of overvoltage
category CAT III up to max. 250V against earth potential, pursuant to
EN 61010-1
- Alternating and direct voltage measuring up to max. 250 V
- Direct current measuring up to 250 mA
- Attenuation measurements from -20 to +50 dBm
- Measurement of resistance up to 1 MOhm.
- Acoustic continuity test
- Battery test for 1.5 and 9 V batteries

Only to be used with mignon batteries.
The measuring instrument must not be used when it is open, i.e. with an
open battery compartment or when the battery compartment cover is
missing. Do not make measurements in damp rooms or under adverse
ambient conditions.
Unfavourable ambient conditions are:
- Wet conditions or high air humidity,
- Dust and flammable gases, vapours or solvent,

Thunderstorms or similar conditions such as strong electrostatic
fields etc.
Any use, other than the one described above, may damage the product.
Moreover, this involves hazards such as e.g. short circuit, fire, electric
shock, etc. It is not allowed to modify or rebuild any part of the product!

using the product for the first time; they contain impor-
tant information about the correct operation.

tant information in these operating instructions which is to

ry also includes all lower categories (e.g. CAT II for measur-
ing on electrical devices and CAT I

The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inad-
missible for reasons of safety and approval (CE).
If you have doubts about how the equipment should be operated or how
to connect it safely, consult a trained technician.
Measuring instruments and their accessories are not toys and should be
kept out of the reach of children.
On industrial sites, the accident prevention regulations of the association
of the industrial workers’ society for electrical equipment and utilities
must be followed.
In schools, training centres, computer and self-help workshops, the use
of measuring instruments must be supervised by trained personnel in a
responsible manner.
Before measuring voltages, always make sure that the measuring instru-
ment is not set to a measuring range for currents.

The voltage between any socket of the measuring instrument and earth
may not exceed 250 VDC/AC in excess voltage category III.
Take particular care when dealing with voltages exceeding 25 V AC or 35
V DC! Even at voltages as low as these, there is a danger of fatal elec-
tric shock if you touch electric conductors.
Check the measuring device and its measuring leads for any damage
before each measurement. Never make any measurements if the pro-
tecting insulation is defective (torn, missing etc.)
To avoid electric shock, do not to touch the connections/measuring
points directly or indirectly during measurements. While making meas-
urements, do not hold beyond the tangible markings on the grip of the
test probes.
Do not use the multimeter just before, during or just after an electrical
storm (electrical shock / high-energy overvoltages!). Make sure that your
hands, shoes, clothing, the floor, the measuring device and/or measuring
lines, the circuits and its parts are always dry.
Do not use the product inside of rooms, or in poor ambient conditions,
where flammable gases, vapours or explosive dust may be present or
are present!
Do not use near to:
- strong magnetic or electromagnetic fields
- transmitting aerials or HF generators,
These can affect the measurement.
For safety reasons, when measuring only use measuring cables or
accessories that are suitable for the specifications of the multimeter. Only
use double, or strengthened, insulated measuring accessories.

If you have a reason to believe that the device can no longer be operat-
ed safely, disconnect it immediately and secure it against being operat-
ed unintentionally. It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer
possible if:
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the device no longer works and
- the unit was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of
time or
- it has been subjected to considerable stress in transit
Do not switch the measuring instrument on immediately after it has been
taken from a cold to a warm environment. The condensation that forms
might destroy your device. Allow the device to reach room temperature
before switching it on.
Do not carelessly leave the packaging material lying around since it
could become a dangerous plaything for children.
You should also heed the safety instructions in each chapter of these
instructions.

Product Description
The analogue multimeter (hereinafter referred to as multimeter) is
equipped with a shock attenuating pointer instrument. The scale is
equipped with a mirror that always enables accurate reading. The multi-
meter can be used in any operating position.
The mA-current range is protected against overload with a micro fuse.
The individual measuring functions and ranges are selected with a rotary
switch.
The multimeter can be used for up to max. 250 V for hobby or profes-
sional applications.
On delivery, the measuring leads may be covered by protective sleeves.
Before use, pull the sleeves off the safety plugs and the measuring tips.
After use, put them back for transport protection.
The scale pointer can be calibrated with the calibration screw. Perform
this before each measurement to prevent inaccurate measurements.

Start-up
Prior to working with the measuring device, you have to insert the
enclosed battery first. Insert the battery as described in the chapter
„Cleaning and Maintenance“.
Rotary switch (4)
The individual measuring functions can be set using the rotary switch. If
the rotary switch is set to „OFF“, the measuring device is switched off.
Always turn the device off when it is not in use.
Measuring
Do not exceed the maximum permitted input values.
Never touch circuits or parts of circuits with voltages
greater than 25 V/AC rms or 35 V/DC! Danger to life!
Before making measurements, check the connected
measuring lines for damage such as cuts, cracks or
pinches. Replace defective measuring lines immedi-
ately with new ones, defective measuring lines should
not be used any longer! Danger to life!
Before changing the measuring range, the test probes
have to be removed from the measured object.
Always start each measurement with the largest meas-
uring range. Then gradually change to a smaller one to
achieve an exact measured result. The best accuracy
is achieved in the middle range of the scale (scale
range approx. 70 - 110°).

The measuring ranges on the rotary switch correspond to the maximum
scale value. For the reading, always select the corresponding value (e.g.
scale 10 for the measuring ranges 10 and 100 (if you select 100 please
multiply the measured value by 10)).
a) Zero adjustment
Before each measurement, adjust the zero position with the calibration
screw (2) (scale value 0V). There must be no measuring signal on the
measuring lines.
b) Measuring AC and DC voltages
Do not exceed the maximum permitted input values;
this also applies when measuring superimposed direct
voltages (e.g. ripple voltages).
Proceed as follows to measure DC voltages:
- With the rotary switch, select the measuring
range V .
- Connect the black measuring line to the
COM socket (5) and the red measuring line
to the V socket (7).
- Now perform the zero adjustment.

Pay attention to the correct polarity (red = + /
black = -) and connect the two measuring
tips with the object to be measured (battery,
circuit, etc.).
- In the event of faulty polarity, no value will be

displayed. The built-in protective diode blocks the reading. Stop the
measurement and repeat the measurement with the correct polarity.
Read off the measured value on the scale „DC“.
- After completing the measurement, remove the measuring tips from
the measuring circuit and switch the multimeter off (rotary switch posi-
tion: „OFF“).
Proceed as follows to measure AC voltages:
- Select the measuring range V with the rotary switch .
- Connect the black measuring line to the COM socket (5) and the red
measuring line to the V socket (6).
- Now perform the zero adjustment.
- Now connect the two measuring probesto the object to be measured
(generator, switch etc.).
- Read off the measured value on the scale „AC“.
- After completing the measurement, remove the measuring tips from
the measuring circuit and switch the multimeter off (rotary switch posi-
tion: „OFF“).

c) Resistance measurement
Make sure that all parts of the circuit, switches and
components and other objects to be measured are dis-
connected from the voltage and discharged.
Proceed as follows to measure the resistance:
- With the rotary switch, select the measuring
range Ω x1K.
- Now perform the zero adjustment.
- Connect the black measuring line to the
COM socket (5) and the red measuring line
to the „+“ measuring socket (6).
- Connect the two measuring tips and wait
until the pointer has stabilised. A value of
approx. 0 Ohm must be displayed. In case of
a deviation, adjust the pointer with the 0 Ohm calibration control (3) to
0 Ohm.
- Read off the measured value on the scale „Ω“. Multiply the displayed
value by a factor of 1,000 to get the measured value e. g. 5 Ω (display)
x 1,000 = 5 x 1,000 = 5 kΩ (measured value).
- After completing the measurement, remove the measuring tips from
the measuring circuit and switch the multimeter off (rotary switch posi-
tion: „OFF“).
d) Direct current measurement
Never exceed the max. permitted input values in the
respective measuring ranges.
Only make current measurements in circuits up to
max. of 250 V.

To measure direct currents up to 250 mA/DC proceed as follows:
- With the rotary switch, select the measuring
range „mA“.
- Connect the black measuring line to the
COM socket (5) and the red measuring line
to the socket „+“ (6).
- Now perform the zero adjustment.
- Disconnect the object to be measured from
the mains.

Pay attention to the correct polarity (red = + /
black = -) and connect the two measuring
tips in series with the measuring object (bat-
tery, circuit, etc.).
- In the event of faulty polarity, no value will be displayed. The built-in
protective diode blocks this reading. Stop the measurement and
repeat the measurement with the correct polarity.
- Read the measured value on the scale „DC“.
- Disconnect the measured object from the mains and remove the meas-
uring tips from the measuring circuit after the measurement is complet-
ed. Switch off the multimeter (rotary switch position „OFF“).

e) Acoustic continuity check
Make sure that all the parts of the circuit, switches and
components and other objects to be measured are dis-
connected from the voltage and discharged.
The continuity test enables the quick check of a power line, for example.
If the continuity resistance is approx. <20 Ohm, a beep is emitted. The
pointer value does not correspond to the actual measured value!
Proceed as follows to make the measurement:
- With the rotary switch, select the measuring
range .
- Connect the black measuring line to the
COM socket (5) and the red measuring line
to the „+“ socket (6).
- Now perform the zero adjustment.
- Check it is functioning, by connecting both
measuring tips with each another.
- Now connect the two measuring probes to
the object to be measured (component,
switch etc.).
- If the resistance value is approx. <20 Ohm
an acoustic signal is emitted.
- After the measurement is completed, select
rotary switchposition „OFF“ to „switch off“ the
multimeter.

f) Attenuation measurement in dBm
The multimeter VC-12A enables absolute „dBì measurements in circuits
with an impedance of 600 Ohm. Measurements are made in the „V~“
range. 0dB = 1mW (0.775 V).
Proceed as follows to make the measurement:
- With the rotary switch, select the measuring
range „10 V
.
- Connect the black measuring line to the
COM socket (5) and the red measuring line
to the socket „+“ (6).
- Now perform the zero adjustment.
- Now connect the two measuring probesto
the object to be measured (generator, switch
etc.).
- Read off the measured value on the scale
„dB“.
The dB scale corresponds to the 10 V-measuring range.
If another measuring range is selected, a correction factor must be taken
into consideration in the calculation.
AC-V range 10 V 50 V 100 V 250 V
Correction factor 0dB +14dB +20dB +28dB
- If signals with a direct voltage ratio are to be measured, a capacitor of
>0.1nF must be connected in series to the measuring lines (decou-
pling).
- Disconnect the measured object from the mains and remove the meas-
uring tips from the measuring circuit after the measurement is complet-
ed. Switch off the multimeter (rotary switch position „OFF“).

g) Battery test
The multimeter tests 1.5 or 9 V batteries with a low load. This prevents
faulty measurements during open-circuit operation and gives significant
clues to the battery condition.
„REPLACE/BAD“ indicates that the battery must be replaced.
„?“ indicates that the battery may only be used for low
power consumer loads.
„GOOD“ indicates that the battery is OK.
To test the batteries, proceed as follows:

With the rotary switch select the measuring
function „ “ and the measuring range
1.5 or 9V.
- Connect the black measuring line to the
COM socket (5) and the red measuring line
to the socket „+“ (6).
- Now perform the zero adjustment.

Pay attention to the correct polarity (red = + /
black = -) and connect the two measuring
tips to the battery.
- Read off the measured value on the scale
„BAT“.
- After the measurement is completed, select
the rotary switch position „OFF“ to „switch
off“ the multimeter.
