Make certain that speakers and input sources are properly connected before switching on.
Keep volume levels at minimum gain and equalization set to 0dB position before switching on.
NOTE: The system’s operation is delayed by approximately three seconds after pressing the AC Mains power
switch. This is due to the built-in protection circuitry, designed to protect the speakers and other system
components.

1. POWER SWITCH
This switch is used to switch the unit on and off. When the unit is on, the corresponding power indicator LED
is lit.
CAUTION: Decrease the MASTER gain levels (7) and (8) before switching the EMI-300 on or off.
2. MIC 1 VOLUME CONTROL
This knob controls the MIC 1 channel’s input signal level.
3. MIC 2 VOLUME CONTROL
This knob controls the MIC 2 channel’s input signal level.
4. LINE INPUT VOLUME CONTROL
This knob provides master control of the line input signal level. The active line input is selected using Line
Input switches (12 – 16). Individual line input levels can be set using the rear panel LINE INPUT GAIN
Controls (26).
5. BASS EQ CONTROL
This knob controls the Bass EQ, applied to all input channels. This is a shelving type EQ, providing a boost or
cut of ±6dB at 100Hz.
6. TREBLE EQ CONTROL
This knob controls the Treble EQ, applied to all input channels. This is a shelving type EQ, providing a boost
or cut of ±6dB at 10kHz.

7. MASTER 1 VOLUME CONTROL
This knob controls the output level of AMP 1 and AMP 2 when in stereo mode, and the output level of AMP 1
when in mono mode. It controls the Mono Sub Out in either mode.
8. MASTER 2 VOLUME CONTROL
This knob controls the output level of the MASTER 2 Out. In stereo mode, the MASTER 2 Out signal is
identical to the signal sent to AMP 1 and AMP 2. In mono mode, it controls the output level of AMP 2, and
carries a signal identical to the signal sent to AMP 1.
9. DUCKING SWITCH
This switch is used to switch the Ducking function on and off. When Ducking is switched on, the
corresponding indicator LED is lit. See page 17 for more information on using the Ducking function.
10. MIC INPUT 1
MIC 1 is a low impedance (“low-Z”) input on a balanced XLR jack for mic-level sources such as condenser
and dynamic microphones. Pin 2 and Pin 3 carry +20V phantom power for condenser mics that require
external power. This input also provides the Ducking function (9).
11. MIC INPUT 2
MIC 2 is a low impedance (“low-Z”) input on a balanced XLR jack for mic-level sources such as condenser
and dynamic microphones. Pin 2 and Pin 3 carry +20V phantom power for condenser mics that require
external power. The Ducking function is not available on this input.
12. CD 1 LINE INPUT SWITCH
Pressing this switch will activate the CD 1 line input of Line Inputs 1-5 (Rear Panel 25). The physical
connectors for the CD 1 input channels are on the rear panel, with the level being controlled both by a rear
panel stereo Line Input Gain Control (Rear Panel 26) and a front panel master Line Input Volume Control
(Front Panel 4).
13. CD 2 LINE INPUT SWITCH
Pressing this switch will activate the CD 2 line input of Line Inputs 1-5 (Rear Panel 25). The physical
connectors for the CD 2 input channels are on the rear panel, with the level being controlled both by a rear
panel stereo Line Input Gain Control (Rear Panel 26) and a front panel master Line Input Volume Control
(Front Panel 4).
14. AUX LINE INPUT SWITCH
Pressing this switch will activate the AUX line input of Line Inputs 1-5 (Rear Panel 25). The physical
connectors for the AUX input channels are on the rear panel, with the level being controlled both by a rear
panel stereo Line Input Gain Control (Rear Panel 26) and a front panel master Line Input Volume Control
(Front Panel 4).
15. VIDEO (AUDIO SIGNAL) LINE INPUT SWITCH
Pressing this switch will activate the VIDEO line input of Line Inputs 1-5 (Rear Panel 25). The physical
connectors for the VIDEO input channels are on the rear panel, with the level being controlled both by a rear
panel stereo Line Input Gain Control (Rear Panel 26) and a front panel master Line Input Volume Control
(Front Panel 4). This input is intended for the audio output of a video playback deck or VCR.

16. TAPE LINE INPUT SWITCH
Pressing this switch will activate the Tape line input of Line Inputs 1-5 (25). The physical connectors for the
Tape input channels are on the rear panel, with the level being controlled both by a rear panel stereo Line
Input Gain Control (26) and a front panel master Line Input Volume Control (Front Panel 4).
17. OUTPUT METER AND LIMITER LED
The six-segment LED meter indicates the signal levels being sent to AMP 1 and AMP 2. When the sixth
segment “LIMIT” LED is lit, it indicates that the signal is near clipping, and that the limiter circuitry has
engaged to prevent overload distortion.

18. AMP1/AMP2 SPEAKER OUT
The EMI-300 contains a two-channel power amp. The two channels can be used independently to supply
150W+150W, or bridged to provide 300W output power.
If the channels are used independently, two speakers may be connected to the AMP 1 and AMP 2 outputs.
When used in bridged mode, connect speakers only to the Bridged Speaker Out (19).
19. BRIDGED SPEAKER OUT
If the channels are used in Bridged mode, a single speaker may be connected to the BRIDGED SPEAKER OUT
connectors only. When connecting a speaker to the BRIDGED SPEAKER OUT, use an 8to 16speaker (do
not connect a speaker that is less than 8). In this case, be careful not to connect the speaker to the AMP 1
or AMP 2 outputs.
20. MASTER 2 OUT
The signal at this output is identical to the signal sent to AMP 1 and AMP 2 when the EMI-300 is in stereo
mode. Connect these balanced +4dB XLR outputs to an additional power amp or powered speakers for
additional power or monitoring capability, or to a two-track tape recorder. The output level of MASTER 2
OUT is controlled by the Master 2 Volume Control (8).
21. MONO SUB OUT
The MONO SUB OUT signal is a mono version of the signal controlled by Master 1, and is sent through a
lowpass filter with a 100Hz cutoff at 12dB/octave. Connect this balanced +4dB XLR output to your powered
subwoofer speaker. The MONO SUB OUT level is adjusted using the Master 1 Volume Control.

22. AMP ROUTING SWITCH
This switch selects between three output mode settings for the power amp.
MASTER 1 TO AMP 1+2
This setting should be used for stereo mode, with the stereo signal being output to the AMP 1 (L) and AMP 2
(R) outputs.
MASTER 1 TO AMP 1/ MASTER 2 TO AMP 2
This is a mono setting, and allows for two independent speaker sets to be controlled by individual master
volumes.
MASTER 1 BRIDGE MODE
In this setting, the two power amp channels are bridged, resulting in an output of 300W mono. The signal is
only output from the BRIDGE OUT speaker connectors in this instance.
23. MODE SWITCHES
These switches will set either the internal amplifiers controlled by Master 1 or the Master 2 Out controlled by
the Master 2 Volume Control to either stereo or mono operation.
24. INSERT I/O JACKS
These are unbalanced TRS jacks, used for patching an effect or dynamics processor into the channel’s signal
path just before the channel fader. They are located before the power amplifier in the signal chain, and will
not affect the MASTER 2 OUT XLR outputs (20) and (21). See the INSERT I/O Jacks Section on page 17 for
more information.
A standard stereo “Y” cable can be used for this purpose, with tip=out, ring=in, and sleeve=ground. The
nominal output level/impedance is 0dB/10k, and the nominal input level/impedance is 0dB/600.
Connecting to the INSERT I/O jacks will break the signal flow, so completing the circuit of output to input is
necessary.
25. LINE INPUTS 1-5
Each channel provides a high impedance (“high-Z”) stereo inputs on left and right unbalanced RCA phono
jacks for connecting line-level devices such as CD players, keyboards, video and audio playback decks, etc.
One input can be selected at a time using the front panel LINE INPUT SWITCHES (12-16).
26. LINE INPUT GAIN CONTROLS
This knob controls the signal level of the Line Input 1-5 (25). Start out with each of these controls set to the
center position, then individually set these controls to compensate for the different output levels your stereo
sources.
27. REC OUT
Connect the line inputs of your mixdown deck to the REC OUT line outputs for recording your stereo mix. The
signal output from the REC OUT is identical to the signal sent to the MASTER 1 output, yet is not affected by
the setting of the MASTER EQ and MASTER VOLUME controls and works in every operational mode.

Operational Modes
Operational Modes
The EMI-300 can be operated in one of three modes—Stereo, Mono, or Bridge. Operational modes can be
selected with the AMP ROUTING switch (22). Depending on the selected mode, your speakers must be
connected in a specific way for the mode you have selected. First choose an operational mode that best suits
your needs from the list below, and then connect your speakers as suggested. Refer to the “Speaker
Connection,” section on Page 10 for more information on matching your speaker connection to your selected
operational mode.
How do you want to operate your EMI-300?
Stereo Mode gives you a versatile stereo setup.
Switch the AMP ROUTING switch into its left position, “Master 1 to Amp 1+2.” Connect your speakers to
terminals AMP 1 (left channel) and AMP 2 (right channel).
The following controls apply in this mode:
MIC 1 – volume level for mic 1
MIC 2 – volume level for mic 2
VOLUME – volume of active line input
LOW/HIGH – master EQ
MASTER 1 – active master volume level
Mono Mode can be used as a distributed background sound system.
Switch the AMP ROUTING switch into its middle position, “Master 1 to Amp 1/ Master 2 to Amp 2.” Connect
your speakers to terminals AMP 1 (for speaker set A) and AMP 2 (for speaker set B).
The following controls apply in this mode:
MIC 1 – volume level for mic 1
MIC 2 – volume level for mic 2
VOLUME – volume of active line input
LOW/HIGH – master EQ
MASTER 1 – master volume level for AMP 1 terminals
MASTER 2 – master volume level for AMP 2 terminals
Bridge Mode provides a powerful sound system for presentations or announcements.
Switch the AMP ROUTING switch into its right position, “Master 1 Bridge Mode.” Connect your speakers to the
BRIDGE OUT terminals (19). Do not use other speaker terminals in this mode.
The following controls apply in this mode:
MIC 1 – volume level for mic 1
MIC 2 – volume level for mic 2
VOLUME – volume of active line input
LOW/HIGH – master EQ
MASTER 1 – active master volume level

CAUTION: When connecting devices to your EMI-300, avoid using non-standard plugs and cables.
Single Speaker Pair
In stereo and mono mode, connect the speakers to the AMP 1 and AMP 2 outputs (18). For bridge mode, use
the BRIDGE OUT terminals (19). Watch for identical speaker polarities to avoid phase problems and sound
cancellation. The output power capacity of the built-in amplifiers is at optimum efficiency when they are
connected to a 4speaker load in stereo or mono mode, and an 8speaker load in bridge mode. Higher
impedances (e.g. 8or 16) decrease the available output power, while impedances below 4(8for
bridge mode) can overload the outputs.
Connection of Additional Speakers
When connecting multiple speakers to the EMI-300, always observe the polarities to avoid phase problems and
sound cancellation.
In a network of speakers, all speakers should produce the same volume. This is a given when all cabinets have
the same individual impedance and when the network has a symmetrical structure. The illustration below shows
examples of a symmetrical and an unsymmetrical network (all speakers are assumed to have the same
impedance).
Parallel and Series Wiring
When connecting several speakers to one output terminal, you have the choice of using either parallel or series
wiring. Parallel wiring should be used when the speakers have individual impedances of 8or higher. Use
series wiring for speakers with impedances of 4or less.

How To Wire Speakers In Parallel
Connect all '+' terminals on the speakers to the red
'+' terminal of the EMI-300 output and all '-'
terminals on the speakers to the black '-' terminal of
the EMI-300 output. For wiring in parallel, connect
the first speaker to the EMI-300 and the following
speaker to the terminals of first speaker, as shown in
the illustration to the right.
As shown in the table, impedances below 4should
not be used for the EMI-300.
How To Wire Speakers In Series
Series wiring means that the speakers are daisy-
chained, very much like the small bulbs in a
Christmas tree illumination set. When making the
connections, you have to make sure that the signal
flow inside a speaker is always from '+' to '-', as it is
in the illustration to the right.
In a series wiring, the impedances of the individual
speakers add up to the total impedance, which in
turn increases with every new speaker in the chain.
In order to keep the total impedance low, series
wiring should only be performed with speakers that
have low individual impedances (4or less).
Calculation of Impedances
Use the formula shown on the right to calculate total
impedance.

Mixed Wiring
By making clever use of both series and parallel
wiring, it is often possible to wire a larger number of
speakers to build a network with 4total
impedance.
If you want to use four identical speakers per
channel, you can use one of the sample networks
shown on the right. Both networks are wired so that
the resulting total impedance equals the individual
speaker impedance.
If, for example, 4speakers are used, the total impedance will also be 4, which perfectly matches the EMI-
300 amplifiers.

Line Inputs (25)
After the speakers are installed, you can now connect all your stereo devices, such as CD players, cassette
players, tuner etc. to their corresponding RCA-type inputs.
One line input can be selected at a time with its corresponding Line Input switch (12 - 16).
Microphone Inputs (10) (11)
Both microphone inputs can be used simultaneously. The pin configuration of the XLR input connectors is pin 1
= ground, pin 2 = signal + (out), and pin 3 = signal – (cold). Use the controls (2) and (3) on the front panel to
adjust the microphone volume levels.
General Instructions
1. Switch off any powered instruments, mics, or devices before connecting to your EMI-300. Also be sure to
reduce all channel and main output levels before making connections.
2. Connect cables to your mics, instruments, and devices before inserting the other end firmly into the
appropriate 3-pin low or 1/4” high impedance jacks on channels 1-6.
Please note that the low and high impedance inputs cannot be used simultaneously.
3. Switch devices on in the order they are connected to your EMI-300. Reverse the order when switching power
off.
4. Set the Main section’s Master control to the “—“ position.
5. To set correct input channel levels, adjust the Input Channel Level control so that the “0” LED of the Main
section’s peak level meter illuminates intermittently.
6. Rotate the Input Channel EQ knobs to change that channel’s tone as desired.
7. Use the Master Volume control to adjust the overall volume.

Initial Settings
Before switching on the EMI-300, set the gain controls of all used line inputs (26) to center position. Set
the gain controls of all unused inputs to full counterclockwise position. Set all gain controls on the front
panel (2) (3) (4) to full counterclockwise position and the MASTER 1 and MASTER 2 controls to full
counterclockwise position. You can now power up the EMI-300 with the POWER switch (1).
Select a sound source from the line inputs and play some music. Increase the LINE INPUT VOLUME control
(4) and the MASTER 1 control (7) until you can hear a sound. Switch between the line inputs and re-adjust
the gain controls (26) to compensate for different sound levels. Set the final overall volume with the
MASTER 1 and MASTER 2 controls and use the MASTER EQ controls (5) (6) for sound adjustments.
Ducking Functions
The ducking function provides automatic attenuation of the line signal when the microphone is used.
To make use of the ducking function, use the MIC 1 microphone input and activate the DUCKING button
(9).
Talking into the microphone at normal level will now automatically fade the line signal volume to
background level. At speech pauses, the line signal will automatically be faded back to normal level.
To prevent self-attenuation of the line signal, do not hold the microphone too close to the speakers when
the ducking function is active.

Select a sound source from the line inputs and play some music. Increase the LINE INPUT VOLUME control (4)
and the MASTER 1 control (7) until you can hear a sound. Switch between the line inputs and re-adjust the
gain controls (26) to compensate for different sound levels. Set the final overall volume with the MASTER 1 and
MASTER 2 controls and use the MASTER EQ controls (5) (6) for sound adjustments.
Ducking Functions

Insert I/O Jacks
The two insert jacks (24) are electronically located before the power amplifier inputs. Inserting a 1/4" TRS plug
makes the signal available at the plug contacts and allows serial connection of external sound processor
devices (see illustration below).

Master 2 Out
This output has two balanced XLR connectors and always carries the stereo master signal, no matter what
operational mode you have selected. The level of this output depends on the setting of the MASTER 2 control.
If you are operating your EMI-300 in stereo mode, you can use the MASTER 2 output to connect another
power amplifier for increasing your available system power.
Mono Sub Out
This output has one balanced XLR connector and always carries a monaural low pass version of the master
