Axis Speed Monitor helps you visualize vehicle speed in a radar detection zone and logs radar tracks on your SD card for statistical processing. It’s ideal for traffic monitoring, speed enforcement, and safety applications. It can be used as a standalone radar installation or integrated with an Axis camera for live view overlay. You can create include and exclude zones to define areas for detection and set speed ranges to trigger specific actions or alarms. The radar offers two monitoring profiles: Area monitoring for objects up to 34 mph and Road monitoring for vehicles up to 65 mph.

AXISSpeedMonitorvisualizesthespeedofvehiclesinaradardetectionzoneinthecamera'sliveview,andlogstheradartrackson
theSDcardforstatisticalprocessing.TheapplicationworksonAxiscameras,checkthecompatibilitylistontheproductpage.
Forstandaloneradarinstallationswithoutacamera,duetoprivacyconcernsorforstatisticalpurposeonly,thentheapplication
canbeinstalledintheradardirectly.Thespeedoverlaywillthenbevisualizedintheradar'sliveview.Inthiscase,theSDcard
shouldbeinstalledintheradartologthestatistics.
TheapplicationrequiresanAXISRadarD2110-VEfortheinstallation,mountedandconguredinaccordancewiththeD2110-VEinstallationguideandtheradarwhitepaper.

Getstarted
Calibratetheradar
Beforeyousetuptheconnectionwiththeradarandconguretheappoverlays,youshouldcalibratetheradarforthescene.The
radarcanbesettorunoneitherAreamonitoringorRoadMonitoringdependingontheusecase.
Theradarisreadytouseassoonasitisinstalled.Thedefaultliveviewwillshowtheradarcoverageandanydetectedmovement,and
youcanadddetectionzonesandrulesrightaway.
Iftheradarismounted3.5m(11ft)aboveground,thereisnoneedtodoanythingelse.Iftheradarismountedonadifferentheight
youneedtocalibratetheradartocompensateforthemountingheight.

Note
MakesureyouenableIgnoreswayingobjectsunderSettings>Radar>Detectionandexcludebushes,treesandsignsfrom
theincludezones.Avoidhavingaroadsignjustinfrontoftheradar.
Ifyouonlywantstatisticsofvehicles,gotoSettings>RMDZonesandselectthezone.ClicktoEditzoneandunder
Triggeron,uncheckHuman.
Howtocalibratetheradar
1.Toconguretheradar,gotoSettings>Radar>Calibration.
2.ClickStartandfollowtheinstructionsofthestep-by-stepguide.
Tomakeiteasiertoseewhereobjectsaremoving,youcanuploadareferencemap,forexampleagroundplanoranaerialphoto,
thatshowstheareacoveredbytheradar.
Imagerequirements:
Supportedleformatsarejpegandpng.
Theimagecanbecroppedintheradar.
Theimagecanberotated±35°intheradar.
Theorientationisnotimportant,sincetheradarcoverageshapewillmovetoadapttotheimageduringcalibration.
Afteruploadingthereferencemapyouneedtocalibratethereferencemapsothattheactualradarcoveragetstheposition,
directionandscaleofthereferencemap.

Calibrationisperformedinthewebinterfacebyclickinginthereferencemap.Thisistheeasiestwaytocalibratethereferencemap.
Aboutdetectionzones
Todeterminewheretodetectmotion,youcanaddmultiplezones.Differentzonescanbeusedtotriggerdifferentactions.
Therearetwotypesofzones:
Anincludezoneisanareainwhichmovingobjectswilltriggerrules.Thedefaultincludezonematchestheentirearea
coveredbythedetector.
Anincludezoneisanareainwhichmovingobjectswilltriggerrules.Thedefaultincludezonematchestheentire
areacoveredbytheradar.
Anexcludezoneisanareainwhichmovingobjectswillbeignored.Useexcludezonesifthereareareasinsideaninclude

Tosetthespeedrangethatyouwantanincludezonetotriggeron:
-UnderTriggerbetweendragbothhandlesoftheslidertosetthespeedrange.Yourdevicewilltriggerwhenan
objectismovingwithinthespeedrange.
-ClickInvertifyouwanttosetyourdevicetotriggerwhenanobjectismovingbelowacertainspeedand
aboveacertainspeed.
Toseewhatresultthemodicationhasontheincludezone:

Areamonitoringprole
Areamonitoringproleisbestusedforobjectsmovingatupto55km/h(34mph).Thisproleallowsyoutodetectwhetheran
objectishuman,vehicle,orunknown.Arulecanbesettotriggeraneventwhenanyoftheseobjectsisdetected.Ifyouwanttotrack
onlyvehicles,youshouldusetheRoadmonitoringproleonpage5.
Areadetectionrange
Detectionrangeisthedistancewithinwhichanobjectcanbetrackedandcantriggeranalarm.Itismeasuredfromneardetection
limit(howclosetothedeviceadetectioncanbemade)toafardetectionlimit(howfarfromthedeviceadetectioncanbemade).
TheAreamonitoringproleisoptimizedforhumandetection,however,itwillalsoallowyoutotrackvehiclesandotherobjects
movingatupto55km/h(34mph)withavelocityaccuracyof+/-2km/h(1.24mph).

Roadmonitoringprole
TheRoadmonitoringproleisbestusedtotrackvehiclesmovingatupto105km/h(65mph)inurbanzones,closedzones,and
onsub-urbanroads.Thismodeshouldnotbeusedfordetectionofhumansorothertypesofobjects.Totrackobjectsotherthan
vehicles,useyourradarintheAreamonitoringproleonpage4.
Roadinstallationexamples
Sidemounted
Tomonitorvehiclestravellingalongaroadyoucanmounttheradarontothesideoftheroad.Theradarwillprovidealateral
coveragedistanceof10m(32ft).
Centermounted
Thismountingoptionrequiresastableposition.Theradarcanbemountedonapoleinthemiddleoftheroadoronabridgeabove
theroad.Theradarwillthenprovidealateralcoveragedistanceof10m(32ft)tobothsidesoftheradar.Theradarcoversa
broaderlateraldistancewhencentermounted.

Roaddetectionrange
Detectionrangeisthedistancewithinwhichanobjectcanbetrackedandcantriggeranalarm.Itismeasuredfromneardetection
limit(howclosetothedeviceadetectioncanbemade)toafardetectionlimit(howfarfromthedeviceadetectioncanbemade).
Thisproleisoptimizedfordetectionofvehiclesandwillproduceavelocityaccuracyof+/-2km/h(1.24mph)whenmonitoring
vehiclesmovingatupto105km/h(65mph).
Detectionrangewhentheradarismountedatanoptimalinstallationheight:
25–70m(82–229ft)forvehiclesmovingat60km/h(37mph).
30–60m(98–196ft)forvehiclesmovingat105km/h(65mph).
Note
Ifthemaximumnumberofradarsinthesamecoexistencezoneexceedstwothenexpectarangedegradationof
approximately10%(near)and20%(far).

Regulatingvehiclesinlowspeedzones
Anindustrialcomplexwithalongroadbetweentwowarehouseshasinstalledaradartohelpenforceaspeedlimitof60km/h(37
mph).IntheRoadmonitoringprole,theradarcandetectwhenavehicleinitsdetectionzoneexceedsthatspeed.Itthentriggersan
eventwhichsendsanemailnoticationstodriversandmanagers.Thereminderhelpsincreasecompliancewiththespeedrestrictions.
Unwantedvehiclesonaclosedroad
Asmallroadouttoanoldquarryhasbeenclosed,however,reportsofvehiclesdrivingontheroadhaveresultedinauthorities
installingasecurityradarintheRoadmonitoringprole.Theradarismountedalongsidetheroadandcoverstheentirewidthofthe
road.Wheneveravehicleenterstheincludezone,ittriggersaashingbeaconthatwarnsdriverstoleavetheroad.Italsosendsa
messagetothesecurityteamsothattheycandispatchaunitifneeded.
Speedawarenessontheroad
Aroadthatpassesthroughasmalltownhashadsomeincidentsofspeeding.Toenforcethespeedlimitof70km/h(43mph),the
trafccontrolhasinstalledasecurityradar,intheRoadmonitoringprole,onabridgethatcrossesovertheroad.Thishas
allowedthemtodetectthespeedthatvehiclesaretravellingatandmonitorwhentheyshouldhaveunitsstationedlongthe
roadtocontrolthetrafc.

Safetywithhumansandvehicles
Staffataschoolhaveidentiedtwosafetyissuesthattheywouldliketoaddress.Theyhaveexperiencedunwantedvisitorsentering
thepremisesduringtheschoolday,aswellasvehiclesviolatingthelowspeedzoneof20km/h(12mph)outsidetheschool.The
radarismountedonapole,nexttothepedestrianwalkpath.TheAreamonitoringproleonpage4waschosen,asitmakes
theradarcapableoftrackingbothhumansandvehiclesmovingatspeedslowerthan55km/h(34mph).Thishelpsthestaff
keeptrackofpeoplecomingandgoingduringschoolhourswhilealsobeingabletotriggeraspeakertowarnpedestrianswhen
apassingvehicleisdrivingtoofast.
Downloadandinstalltheapplication
Toinstalltheapplication,gototheproductpageanddownloadthelatestversion.Accessthecamerayouwanttoconnecttothe
radar,oryoucaninstalltheapplicationdirectlyontheradar.Thendothefollowing:

Exportstatistics
Youcandownloadthestatisticsofthedayorasetdaterange.Theinformationintheleincludesalldetectedmovingobjects
withinrange,andwhenthoseobjectsenteredorexitedaparticularradarmotiondetectionzone.Thestatisticswillbesavedasa
commaseparatedle(csv).

Youcancreaterulestomakeyourdeviceperformanactionwhencertaineventsoccur.Aruleconsistsofconditionsandactions.
Theconditionscanbeusedtotriggertheactions.Forexample,thedevicecanstartarecordingorsendanemailwhenitdetects
motion,orshowanoverlaytextwhilethedeviceisrecording.
Youcancreaterulestomakeyourdeviceperformactionswhencertaineventsoccur.Aruleconsistsofconditionsandactions.The
conditionscanbeusedtotriggertheactions.Forexample,thedevicecanplayanaudioclipaccordingtoascheduleorwhenit

Activatestrobesirenwhenradardetectsaspeedviolation
UseanAxisstrobesirentoletpossiblespeedersknowthatyourperimeterisprotected.
ThisexampleexplainshowtoactivateaproleinthestrobesirenwheneverAXISSpeedMonitordetectsaspeedviolationusing
theconnectedradar.
Prerequisites
CreateanewuserwiththeroleOperatororAdministratorinthestrobesiren.
Createtwoprolesinthestrobesiren:oneforwhenthedriverismovingwithintheallowedspeed,andtheother
whenthespeedlimitsareviolated.
SetupAXISSpeedMonitorinthecamera,andanincludeareacalled“Area1”.
