2 Overview
General description
Magne is an electromagnetic process lock that is designed without any moving parts, which means it is
hardwearing and ideal for industrial applications and harsh environments. Magne can keep a door or cover locked
with a holding force of up to 1500 N. When the power is then broken, magnetic materials will not stick to the
surface
Magne 3 is an electromagnetic lock that can be complemented by any choice of external interlocking device.
The Magne 4 variants are electromagnetic locks with an integrated Eden safety sensor for secure interlocking
protection. They are available with dynamic or OSSD signal Magne 4 is available in a choice of different variants.
These include an M12 8-pole connector, which permits information connectors for indication (e.g. when the anchor
plate is locked to the electromagnet). The 5-pole variant has a connector configuration that enables connection to a
Urax B1R adaptor unit for connection to the AS-i-bus.
Two variants of the Magne anchor plate are available. The one coded with a B has an inbuilt permanent magnet,
which holds the door or cover closed with a force of approx. 30 N when the power to the electromagnet is cut.
Magne 3 and 4 are supplied without an anchor plate and Magne 4 is also supplied without Eva (Eva is the passive
part of the non contact sensor that is integrated in Magne 4).
For further details, see chapter Overview of models.
Y-connectors can be used to connect several Magne units and Eden sensors in series, which enables control and
monitoring with one single Pluto safety PLC or Vital safety module
No current spikes over the rated current when locking is activated, which simplifies dimensioning of the system.
Safety directives
Warning
Please carefully read the entire user instructions before you use the unit.
Installation of these units should always be done by a qualified electrician who follows the safety
directives, standards stated and the machinery directive.
Failure to comply with instructions, usage that is not in accordance with that stated in these

4 Connecting
Several Magne 4s can be connected together in series. However, it is not possible to combine OSSD and dynamic
signals. If only one OSSD is used or if Magne OSSD is the first in the series, +24 VDC must be connected in at
OSSD1 In and OSSD2 In. Otherwise, OSSD output signals will not be generated from Magne. See images below
with examples of series connection of Magne 4 DYN-Info and Magne 4 OSSD-Info.

5 Installation and maintenance
Maximum installation tolerance between electromagnet and anchor plate is ±5 mm lengthways to Magne and
±3 mm sideways. Available fittings for closing doors are designed for 515 mm door gap Dimensions for installation
of a sliding door as drawing below.
The anchor plate is mounted with 2 X M8 bolts with cellular rubber between the anchor plate and door. The cellular
rubber enables the anchor plate to adjust to Magne. The cellular rubber should not be compressed to a thickness
less than 8 mm. Choose suitable bolt that reaches the bottom of the anchor plate hole allowing sufficient play in the
cellular rubber to ensure anchor plate movement. Recommended torque is 7 ±2 Nm.
Installation instructions included with the respective installation kit.
Important!
All dimensions given in millimeters.
Positioning of Eva
Installation directions
Please carefully follow the instructions below to avoid personal injuries or damage to the unit.
Caution
After installation, check that the surfaces of the magnet and anchor plate are flush and
parallel such that full contact is obtained with the door is closed.

Magne must be installed as close to the door handle as possible. The distance between
the lock and the handle creates a lever effect, reducing the operating force necessary to
force the lock. The bigger the distance the greater the risk of the anchor plate not being
flush with the electromagnet, which significantly reduces the holding force.
The holding force of the lock can be significantly reduced if the anchor plate and cellular
rubber have no scope to move. Check that full alignment is always obtained.
It is important that Eva is correctly positioned in relation to the inbuilt Adam sensor (for
Magne 4). See section Positioning and orientation of Eva.
The anchor plate can suffer permanent damage if the tightening torque is greater than
9 Nm (7 ±2 Nm) on installation. The anchor plate is not to be used as the only door stop.
Additional door stops must be used to avoid damaging the Magne.
Warning
The installation tolerance in the inbuilt sensor can be reduced if Magne is installed directly
onto steel. A gap of 2.5 mm between the installation surface and Magne is recommended
to assure performance.
The M12 connector should be connected after Magne has been installed on the intended
surface.
All safety functions must be tested before the unit is commissioned.
Maintenance
The electromagnet should be regularly cleaned to maintain its full holding power.
Warning
The safety functions and mechanism must be regularly tested, at least once a year, to check that
all safety functions are working correctly (EN ISO 13849-1:2015/EN 62061:2005/A2:2015)
Contact your nearest ABB Jokab Safety service center or retailer in the event of a malfunction or product damage.
Do not attempt to repair the product as this can result in permanent damage, which impairs the safety of the unit,
which in turn, can lead to serious personal injuries.
Positioning and orientation of Eva.
This section concerns the Magne 4 only.
The integrated interlocking device Eden consists of two different units, Adam and Eva. The units must be
positioned correctly for the sensor to work as intended. Adam is built into the casing around Magne 4 and sits
between the electromagnet and the M12 connector. The figure below shows Eva correctly positioned above Magne
when the door is closed.
The safety application is based on the Eden sensor deciding if the guard is open or closed, which means it is very
important that the units are carefully positioned, and the safety functions tested.
Testing of safety functions
This section concerns the Magne 4 only. Similar tests should be performed when using an external safe
interlocking breaker together with Magne 3.
Check that the safety functions work by following these steps:
The Eva unit correctly positioned and oriented above the Adam unit that is built into Magne 4.
2TLC172315M0201, rev K 16 www.abb.com/jokabsafety
Monday, May 07, 2018 10:51:13 AM
1) Break the safety circuit before this unit when Eva is in position next to Adam. The LED should blink between
green and red and the safety monitor goes into safe state. For information on indications, see section
Troubleshooting and section LED indication.
2) Reset the safety circuit and safety monitor.
3) Magne should shine green (solid light).
4) Move Eva away from position next to Adam. The LED should change color (solid light) from green to red
and the safety monitor should go to safe state.
5) Move Eva back close to Adam and reset the safety circuit and safety monitor.
Another function test that can be done is to slowly move Eva away from Adam (i.e. slowly open the door from the
fully closed position). The LED should rapidly alternate between green and red when Eva is within 2 mm of the
maximum sensory range of Adam.
Replacing Eva
When a coded Eva needs to be replaced, the old code must be deleted from the internal Adam sensor in Magne.
To delete a coded Eva, follow the instructions below for Eden Dynamic and OSSD. (This is not necessary when
replacing an Eva General with another Eva General.)
Eden Dynamic
1) Move the old Eva out of sensory range.
2) Disconnect the power supply voltage to Magne. (0 V should be connected at all times.)
3) Connect +24 VDC to Dynamic in.
4) Connect power voltage to Magne (marked +24 VDC).
5) Disconnect the voltage to Dynamic in after 5 seconds but within 10 seconds.
The Adam unit in Magne is now reset and Magne should blink red.
6) Disconnect power voltage to Magne (marked +24 VDC).
7) Check that the new Eva is within sensory range and connect the power voltage to Magne.
The LED in Magne should show green and the programming is completed.
Eden OSSD
1) Move the old Eva out of sensory range.
2) Disconnect the power supply voltage to Magne. (0 V should be connected at all times.)
3) Connect +24 VDC to OSSD1 Out and OSSD2 Out.
