MINI-TROWEL / EDGER : MODEL B424
INSTRUCTION MANUAL AND PARTS LIST
FOREWORD
The Terex Bartell Ltd.B424 Mini-trowel / Edger has been developed to float and finish the
edges of concrete floors, up to perimeter walls, around columns and small areas, eliminating
tiring hand troweling and increasing overall productivity and quality.
It is important that the following information be read carefully in order that the operational
performance of your Bartell trowel be fully understood. Proper maintenance will ensure long
life and top performance.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Failure To Follow Safety Instructions May Lead To Injury
Always keep unauthorized, inexperienced untrained people away from this machine. Never
leave machine unattended while engine is running.
Rotating and moving parts will cause injury if contacted. Make sure that all guards are in
place. Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts.
Fuel the machine only when the engine is stopped using all necessary safety precautions. Be
careful not to come in contact with the muffler when the engine is hot to avoid burns.
Be sure that the safety switch is working correctly. Ignition supply must be cut instantly
when the handle is released. Never attempt to bypass the function of the safety/stop switch.
To avoid slipping and loss of control when starting the trowel, the operator should maintain
good footing. It is recommended that the operator wear safety shoes for added protection.
Be careful when working around pipes or ducts protruding from the floor or slab edges. If
the trowel blades hit such obstacles, damage to the machine or possible operator injury may
result.
When starting the machine, do not exceed 1/3 throttle position. A higher setting may cause
the centrifugal clutch to engage and the handle to rotate.
Always be sure to maintain a firm grip on the machine with both hands to ensure proper
control. While using the machine the operator must always secure the safety/stop switch
with the left hand for correct function of the safety/ stop switch.
Exhaust fumes are lethal. Always operate the machine in well ventilated areas.
2
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Your new mini-trowel comes to you fully assembled. All you have to do, is unfold the
handle and fasten the knob. Remove any shipping or packing materials. Be sure to remove
and discard the band securing the safety/stop switch to the left handle. This serves only to
facilitate shipping and is not intended to be a permanent feature. When removing the
machine from the carton be careful to use the handles to lift the unit from the carton.
NEVER LIFT THE MACHINE BY THE RING OR THE DISC.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
STARTING PROCEDURES
Prior to staring the trowel, check the engine and gearbox oil levels. “WARRANTY IS VOID
IF RUN WITHOUT OIL.” Fill the gas tank with clean gasoline as specified in the engine
manual.
Insure that the safety/stop switch is in “ON” position, set the choke and set throttle lever at
1/3 position.
Hold the trowel firmly with the left hand and start the engine. After the engine starts, move
choke to fully open position and let the engine warm up before operating.
Allow longer warm up in colder weather.
STOPPING PROCEDURES
Throttle engine down to minimum setting.
Put safety/stop switch in “OFF” position.
Never use the choke to stop the engine. If the machine has been run on full speed, allow the
engine to run at idle speed for 2-3 minutes to cool.
USING THE TROWEL
Guiding the trowel on the slab is simple. Get into the operator’s position behind the center
of the handle with good footing and apply the throttle slowly until desired speed is obtained.
Push handle down and machine moves to the right.
Lift handle up and the machine moves to the right.
Slightly twist to the right and the machine will move forward.
Slightly twist to the left and the machine will move to backward.
Holding the handle in the neutral position, the machine will remain stationary.
3
PREPARATION OF CONCRETE SURFACE
Use of a mechanical or vibrating screed to “strike” the concrete surface to level will
provide good compaction to the slab and produce an ideal surface for finishing. It should
be remembered that floating/finishing machines cannot repair or correct a poorly
screeded slab.
FLOATING OPERATION
Before attaching the floating disc, be sure that the blades are free of any cement. The
trowel blades must be in the flat position. When the slab has set sufficiently firm that the
operator’s footprint leaves a very slight impression, it is ready for the finishing step.
A standard trowel should be used to float the surface up to the walls or as close to any
obstacles as permitted and then be followed by the mini-trowel for the balance.
When the surface has set properly continue on to the next phase.
FINISHING OPERATION
After the floating operation, remove the floating disc from the finishing blades and clean
the blades, spider plate and rotating ring of cement / concrete paste collected during the
floating operation. Set the pitch to approximately 1/4 “ for the first pass and then continue
to increase the pitch on the following passes, continuing your passes until the desired
floor finish is obtained.
MAINTENANCE
PITCH ADJUSTMENT
The pitch knob is in easy reach of the operator permitting unlimited pitch variation at all
times. When finishing, the setting up/ hardening of the floor may vary from area to area
across the floor, so the pitch may be changed as required, while the machine is in
operation. When transporting the trowel, always keep the blades flat on the floating disc.
CAUTION
: NEVER LIFT THE MACHINE BY THE ROTATING RING. AVOID LEAVING
THE MACHINE RUNNING IN ONE SPOT ON THE CONCRETE TO MAINTAIN SURFACE
TOLERANCES.
CAUTION
: BE CAREFUL WHEN RUNNING THE TROWEL IN AREAS WHERE
STANDING WATER IS EVIDENT AS THE TROWEL WILL TEND TO SKATE AWAY. BE
SURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AT ALL TIMES.
4
LUBRICATION
ENGINE
For full lubricating instructions refer to engine manufacturer’s manual.
GEARBOX
In operation the gear box lubricant is in a fluid state. When the machine is stopped the
lubricant returns to its normal gel state. It will only be necessary to inspect the sealed
components if the outside of the gear box gets too oily or otherwise shows evidence of a
leak. If this happens, clean the machine thoroughly and look for leaks. Effect necessary
repairs immediately. Use SHELL TIVELA COMPOUNDS A (400 gr.) gear oil or
equivalent to top up the gear box after any maintenance to the internal components.
SPIDER PLATE
By experience we know that the major problem with power trowels results from lack of
lubrication. The trowel arm on the spider plate does not require lubrication. If a trowel
arm becomes jammed, this is probably due to an arm being bent which will require
replacement.
ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Engine life will be extended by maintaining a clean engine. Keep air filter clean at all
times. Wash the element in non-oil based solvent. Let the filter dry before re-installing it
in the air cleaner.
SPARK PLUG
Check and clean the spark plug regularly. A fouled, dirty or carboned spark plug causes
hard starting and poor engine performance. Set spark plug according to the recommended
clearance.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Clean the machine after each use to prevent hardening of sludge. Hard concrete is
difficult to remove, greatly increases the weight and reduces efficient operation of the
machine. Avoid spilling solvents used in cleaning, on any of the machine’s rubber parts
such as “V” belts, seals, bearings etc.
DAILY
Check engine oil
Check air filter
Check blade pitch adjustment for proper operation.
Check blade bolts for tightness.
5
WEEKLY
Check belt for wear. Replace if worn.
Check blades for wear. replace as required.
Change engine oil as required.
Check for loose nuts and bolts. Tighten as required.
CHANGING BLADES
Be sure spark plug is disconnected before changing the blades.
Make certain that the machine is on a flat surface and the blades are flat.
Remove bolts and lock washers on each trowel arm and remove the used blades.
Before installing the new blades, clean all concrete / cement form the bottom and sides of
the trowel.
Install new blades, securing all bolts and lock washers.
TROWEL ARM ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
1. Mount trowel arm assemblies onto
attaching blade disc item #6. refer to
drawing.
2. Set pitch so that blades, item #1 are
sitting flat.
3. Loosen off jam nut item #3.
4. Adjust carriage bolt item #4 so that it
is touching the bottom of the plate.
5. Tighten jam nut against the carriage
bolt. NOTE: It is vitally important
that once the carriage bolt is
adjusted to the proper height, it
does not move before or during the
tightening of the jam nut.
6. Repeat the procedure for remaining
blades. Ensure that all connections
are secure before replacing the
floating disc and beginning any
further work with the machine.
CAUTION:
DUE TO THE WEAR PATTERN OF THE BLADES THEY TEND TO BE
EXTREMELY SHARP. WEAR HEAVY DUTY GLOVES DURING THE CHANGE
OPERATION TO AVOID CUTS.
6
LIABILITY
Terex Bartell Ltd. denies any liability for possible damages to persons and / or things
resulting from improper or wrong use of the machine or non-observance of the instructions
contained in this manual.
