The device has a salt container that must contain dishwasher salt at all times to regenerate the water softener. The machine will automatically regenerate the water softener using some of the salt from the salt container. It is important not to use more salt than necessary. To prevent salt from entering the washing cycle, close the cap of the salt container firmly since cloudy glassware may result from salt getting into the washing water.
