Silicon Nitride for
Aerospace Applications
3M
Silicon Nitride 147-31N
In the aerospace industry, every
component must meet exacting
standards for performance and
reliability. Ceradyne, Inc., a 3M
company, supplies a family of
advanced ceramic materials that
have been used in jet engine
applications since the 1990s.
Lightweight, high-strength
3M
Silicon Nitride 147-31N oers
an ideal material solution for some of the aerospace industry’s
toughest challenges.
3M silicon nitride 147-31N features high temperature strength,
excellent fracture toughness and tribological properties. It is
produced at fully dedicated manufacturing plants in the U.S.
using unique compositions and processing techniques. These
processes yield a fully dense and nonporous microstructure
of interlocking needle-shaped grains. This microstructure
toughens the silicon nitride by a crack-deection process
similar to that found in composite materials. The result is a
monolithic silicon nitride with extremely high hardness and
increased fracture toughness. This can translate to improved
mechanical reliability compared to other ceramic materials.
3M silicon nitride 147-31N can thereby help reduce or
eliminate the need for expensive diamond grinding.
Aerospace Applications
Jet engine igniters
3M silicon nitride 147-31N is used as an insulator in jet engine
igniters for applications where aluminum oxide insulators fail.
An electrically insulating material, silicon nitride provides the
high dielectric strength and thermal shock resistance required
for this application.
Wear components
3M silicon nitride 147-31N can potentially be used for bearings,
bushings, seal rings, wear plates and other components in
both aircraft engines and hydraulic systems. Its high strength,
hardness and unique low-friction tribological properties allow
components to be used with only minimal lubrication, with
less wear compared to non-ceramic materials.
