Gateway Features
Manyexistingmeters,dataloggers,RTUʹs,PLCʹs,point‐of‐
sale,andotherremotedevicesonlyhavephysicalinterfaces
designedtoaccessthetelephonenetwork.Theydonothave
serialorEthernetports.Theycurrentlyuseanalogcellularor
standardphonelinestoconnectincircuit‐switchedmodefor
data
transfer.
Analogcellularphoneserviceisbeingdiscontinued.The
combinationoftheHostRJ‐11IPGateway,RJ‐11IPGateway
andaSierraWirelessAirLinkRavenwithEthernetport,
enablesremoteconnectivitybetweenhostapplicationsand
theseremotedevicesovercellularpacketdatanetworks.The
RJ‐11IPGatewayprovidesthe
bridgebetweenadevice
requiringanRJ‐11interfaceandtheRaven,withitsEthernet
interface.TheHostRJ‐11IPGatewaycanprovideEthernet‐
basedInternetconnectivitytoaLegacyHostsystemwithonly
RJ‐11ports.

toconnectdial‐updevices,withinternalmodems,totheRJ‐11
IPGateway,whichthenroutesdatafromthedevicesoverthe
network.TheRJ‐11IPGateway
andHostRJ‐11IPGateway
mimicsthephonecompany,answeringincomingcallsand

routingthemtoaninternalmodemattachedtothephoneport,
orgeneratingcallsfromaninternalmodemtoanattached
device.
Caution: The Host RJ-11 IP Gateway's RJ-11 phone port should
never be connected into the Public Switched Telephone Network
(PSTN). This device is designed to emulate the PSTN for other
devices. The Host RJ-11 IP Gateway may sustain damage not
covered by warranty if it is connected to the Public Switched
Telephone Network.

Caution: If the Host RJ-11 IP Gateway and Raven X or Raven-E (as
applicable) are going to be on a hub which is connected to a local
network, you will need to be sure the addresses you select are not
used by any other device on the network. Consult with your network
administrator if you are unsure.

Gateway with a Raven X, the RJ-11 IP Gateway is also designed to
work with the Raven-E and any other Airlink modem with an Ethernet
connection, using the same configuration outlined here

Note: The Host RJ-11 IP Gateway is set to a default static IP address
of 192.168.1.3, if you want to keep that IP address for the Host RJ-11
IP Gateway, use Public Mode to set the static IP address for the
modem and gateway.
Private Mode
ConfiguretheRavenXforPrivateMode.Inthismode,the
modemcommunicateswiththeHostRJ‐11IPGatewayviaa
staticlocalIPaddress.
Tip: If the modem and the Host RJ-11 IP Gateway are going to be on
a LAN with other computers and devices you may want to use Private
Mode. On a LAN, a DHCP server other than the modem may give the
Host RJ-11 IP Gateway an IP address to which the modem would not
know to send its messages.

Configuring the Host RJ-11 IP Gateway
1. ConnecttheHostRJ‐11IPGatewaytopowerandconnect
theEthernetcablefromyourRavenXcomputertothe
HostRJ‐11IPGateway.
Caution: If the modem has been disconnected from power between
the steps of the previous section and this section, it may have a
different IP address than what you noted. You will need to reconnect
the modem to your computer, reconnect Wireless Ace and repeat step
5 above (page 7) to determine the new IP address given to the
modem by the cellular provider
2. Type“http://”,the IPaddressfromthemodem,and
“192.168.1.3:9080”(seetheexampleinthescreenshot
