(EN) Step 2: Controls
(1) SOURCE 1 and SOURCE 2/USB buttons
control which input sources are active.
When a source is active, the LED ring
around the button lights up.
(2) MONO button collapses the left-right
stereo image down to mono.
(3) DIM button reduces the listening volume
by about 15 dB. Use this function to
switch quickly between loud and quiet
volume levels when mixing. You can
also use this function when plugging
in, removing or switching between
headphones to protect your hearing
from loud clicks, pops or damaging
volume di erences between two
sets of headphones with di ering
impedance values.
(4) VOLUME control adjusts the overall
volume level for all speaker outputs.
WARNING! Make sure all volume
and level controls are turned fully
counterclockwise before powering on
the unit.
WARNING! Excessive, sustained volume
levels can cause hearing damage.
(5) CROSSFEED control blends the left and
right headphone channels to simulate
the characteristic stereo panorama
produced by monitor speakers in an
open acoustic space. In an open room,
the sound from each monitor speaker
enters both ears and gives the brain
additional timing information about
the sound, which then a ects the
listener’s perception of the stereo  eld.
In contrast, headphones feed each ear
a starkly separated stereo channel,
with no crossover to the opposite ear.
This lack of crossover can cause mixes
to sound very di erent on headphones,
as well as being a more fatiguing
listening experience. By using the
CROSSFEED function, you can more
closely simulate the stereo sound of
monitors while mixing on headphones,
which means your headphone mixes
will more closely match the mixes you
produce on monitors, and you will
experience less ear fatigue from long
sessions wearing headphones.
(6) PHONES knobs control the volume level
for each of the two headphone outputs.
(7) MONITOR buttons activate and
deactivate the A, B and C speaker
groups connected to the related
MONITOR OUT XLR jacks. By using
these buttons, you can compare mixes
on di erent sets of stereo speakers
(groups A and B), or you can activate a
single fullrange speaker for an additional
option to monitor in mono (group
C, which has only a single output).
The group C output can also be used to
connect a separate subwoofer to check
the extreme low frequencies in your
mix. When a particular MONITOR group
is active, the LED ring around the related
button will light up.
(8) CROSSFEED ON button activates the
CROSSFEED function. When CROSSFEED
is active the LED ring around the button
will light up.
(9) PHONES 1 and PHONES 2 outputs
accept headphone connections over
¼ " TRS stereo connectors. Each output
has a dedicated knob for individual
volume control. Whenever you change
headphones, press the DIM button
to protect your hearing from clicks,
pops or unexpected volume di erences
between headphones with di ering
impedance ratings.
(10) POWER LED lights up when the unit is
powered on.
(11) USB type B connection allows you to
stream audio into the MONITOR2USB
directly from your computer.
The USB connection is activated by
the SOURCE 2/USB button. When the
USB connection is in use, the INPUT 2
analog connections will still be active,
and the audio from both connections will
be summed together. In this summed
USB/INPUT 2 signal, the relative
signal levels will need to be matched
by using the level controls on the
source equipment.
NOTE! The USB audio interface
is class-compliant, so no special
software drivers are required, and low
latency ASIO* drivers can also be used
(such as ASIO4ALL). However, depending
on host software used, the default USB
input may be set in software as a mono
microphone with excessive software
gain available, the user may need
to recon gure USB input as a stereo
source and reduce software gain to an
appropriate level.
*ASIO is a trademark and software of
Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH.
(12) +4 dBu / -10 dBV button allows you to
change the level sensitivity of the INPUT
2 group of XLR jacks. The +4 dBu setting
matches the line-level standard for pro
audio gear, while the -10 dBV setting
matches the sensitivity standard for
consumer audio (e.g., CD/DVD players).
By properly matching the input
sensitivity, you can more easily match
levels between the two groups of stereo
inputs, and therefore avoid large volume
di erences at the outputs.
(13) INPUT 2 accepts balanced audio
signals from devices using
XLR cables. To activate INPUT 2, press the
SOURCE 2/USB button on the front panel.
The sensitivity for these inputs can be
changed to match pro audio gear
(+4 dBu) or consumer electronics
(-10 dBV) by using the +4 dBu / -10 dBV
button. The INPUT 2 analog connections
remain active when the USB audio
connection is being used, and the audio
from both connections will be summed
together. In this summed USB/INPUT 2
signal, the relative signal levels will need
to be matched by using the level controls
on the source equipment.
NOTE! If you are using only the INPUT 2
analog inputs, disconnect the USB cable
from the back panel to avoid additional
noise that may be introduced by the
USB D/A converters.
(14) INPUT 1 accepts balanced
audio signals from devices using XLR
cables. To activate INPUT 1, press the
SOURCE 1 button. INPUT 1 is set to the
+4 dBu sensitivity standard for use with
pro audio gear.
(15) AC INPUT jack is where you connect the
included power cable.
(16) POWER buttons switches the unit
on and o .
(17) MONITOR OUT C section has a single
XLR output jack for use with a single
fullrange speaker or a subwoofer. To
activate the MONITOR OUT C connection,
press the MONITOR C button on the
front panel.
(18) MONITOR OUT B section has dual left
and right XLR outputs for use with
a stereo pair of monitor speakers.
To activate the MONITOR OUT B
connections, press the MONITOR B
button on the front panel.
(19) MONITOR OUT A section has dual left
and right XLR outputs for use with
a stereo pair of monitor speakers.
To activate the MONITOR OUT A
connections, press the MONITOR A
button on the front panel.
(EN) Step 3: Getting
started
MONITOR2USB Getting started
Make all necessary connections.
DO NOT turn on the power yet.
Make sure your monitor speakers
are switched o .
Turn on your audio sources
(mixers, computers,
recording interfaces).
Set the VOLUME, CROSSFEED
and PHONES knobs to the full
counter-clockwise position.
Turn the unit on.
Power on your monitor speakers.
Press the SOURCE 1 button.
TheLED ring around
the button will light up.
Begin audio playback on
the device connected to
the INPUT 1 jacks.
Choose a set of monitor
speakers by pressing the
MONITOR A or B buttons.
Slowly turn the VOLUME knob
clockwise until you reach your
desired listening level.
Your ideal listening level should be
somewhere between the VOLUME knob’s
20 and 80 settings. If your favored listening
level is outside this range, increase or reduce
the signal levels on your audio sources
to compensate.
Turn the VOLUME knob full
counter-clockwise to begin
checking levels for the
audio source connected to the
INPUT 2/USB connections.
If the device connected INPUT 2 is
a consumer audio device, such as
a CD/DVD player, place the
+4dBu / -10 dBV sensitivity button in the
-10dBV setting. For pro audio gear, use the
+4 dBu sensitivity setting.
Begin audio playback on the
device connected to the INPUT 2
or USB connections.
Slowly turn the VOLUME knob
clockwise until you reach your
desire listening level. Again, your
ideal listening level should be somewhere
between the VOLUME knob’s 20 and 80
settings. If your favored listening level is
outside this control range, increase or
reduce the signal levels on your audio
source to compensate.
Calibrate levels between your
INPUT 1 and INPUT 2/USB sources.
Begin audio playback on
both devices, and then switch back and
forth by the using the SOURCE 1 and
SOURCE 2/USB buttons. Adjust the output
level from each device until you achieve
similar levels between sources while keeping
the VOLUME knob in the same position.
Using the CROSSFEED function
Make sure the PHONES knobs are
turned fully counter-clockwise.
Turn the CROSSFEED knob
fully counter-clockwise.
Make sure the CROSSFEED
function is switched o .
The LED around the CROSSFEED
ON button should not be illuminated.
Activate a set of monitor
speakers by pressing the
MONITOR A or B buttons.
Begin audio playback from
one of your audio devices.
Plug a set of headphones into
the PHONES 1 output.
While wearing the headphones,
turn the PHONES 1 volume knob
clockwise until you  nd a
comfortable level that perceptually matches
the monitor speaker volume.
Take o the headphones and
listen to the stereo  eld from
the monitor speakers.
Activate the CROSSFEED
function by pressing the
CROSSFEED ON button.
The LED ring around the CROSSFEED ON
button will light up.
Put the headphones back on
and listen to the stereo  eld
in the headphones.
Turn the CROSSFEED
knob clockwise in small
increments and listen to how
the CROSSFEED function a ects the stereo
eld in the headphones.
Periodically take o the
headphones so you can compare
the monitor speakers’ stereo
panorama with the headphone stereo  eld.
(If necessary, switch the monitor speakers
o and on by pressing the MONITOR buttons
so you can hear the headphone sound
more clearly.)
Keep comparing and gradually
turning the CROSSFEED knob
clockwise until you  nd a setting
that makes the headphone stereo  eld sound
as similar as possible to the sound from the
monitor speakers.
Alternately, you may simply set
the CROSSFEED knob to a level
that suits your headphone
listening preferences, without direct
reference to the monitor speakers.
