You will have to experiment with temperature and dwell times, depending on the substrate, foil and room temperature but once you get the hang of it
you will find your ImPress simple and fun to use. Just to make sure you and your ImPress get off on the right footing, follow these simple rules for setting
up to get the best out of your unit right from the start.
Ÿ Make sure the CraftDragon® ImPress is sitting firm and level on a solid surface such as a kitchen worktop, solid desk, table or workbench, as
any give in the supporting surface will affect the resulting print.
Ÿ Make sure that the working height is comfortable, but at the right height to allow you to apply pressure to the press.
Ÿ Keep the room you are working in at a steady temperature if possible.
Ÿ For hot foil stamping, stick the make-ready mat in position on the platen using the following method:
1. Remove the backing sheet from the make ready
2. Trim 2cm off 2 adjacent edges of the backing sheet
3. Reapply the backing sheet to the centre of the adhesive layer of the Make-ready mat.
4. Place the Make-ready mat blue face up and press down the edges to enhance adhesion
Ÿ Before switching on, insert your chosen die in the centre channel.
Ÿ Swivel the retaining clip on the end of the channel into a down position to retain the die in place.
Ÿ Turn the temperature dial up to the required setting and allow the print head to warm through thoroughly for at least 10 minutes (the longer the
better)
Ÿ Test the printing temperature of your foils (normally between 4 and 5 on the dial , depending on the foil and the substrate you are using) before
proceeding to your actual project.
Ÿ You’re ready to go - have fun!

How to use the CraftDragon® ImPress for Hot foil Stamping
What is Hot Foil Stamping?
Hot Foil Stamping can be used to decorate and embellish many surfaces and add value to any project. Sometimes also known as foil blocking or
hot foil blocking, it is a high added value dry printing process in which the image is transferred to the surface to be printed by a combination of
heat and pressure.
Ÿ It can be used to produce true 'reflective metal' printing, and other effects impossible with ink based systems. As a result, hot foil printing can
be used to enhance and add value to conventionally printed stationery, greetings cards, certificates etc.
Ÿ Being a dry process, there are no problems with fumes or solvent vapours, or mixing inks, and the printed goods can be handled immediately.
Ÿ The printed image is 100% opaque.
The basic kit you will need to Hot Foil Stamp is:
1. CraftDragon® ImPress
2. Die
3. Make Ready Mat
4. Foil
5. Chosen substrate
All of these can be purchased at www.craftdragon.com
Before you plug in the CraftDragon® ImPress refer to the safety instruction section of this user manual.
Make sure the CraftDragon® ImPress is sitting firm and level on a solid surface such as a kitchen worktop, solid desk, table or workbench. Any
give in the supporting surface will affect the resulting print.

5. Switch on power to the CraftDragon® ImPress using the green switch on the control panel. This will light up with a steady glow showing
that power is reaching the unit.
6. The red pilot light will come on to indicate that the unit is heating up.
7. Leave the unit to heat up for at least three cycles (ie the red light going on and off) and preferably for approximately 10 to 15 minutes to
ensure that heat is distributed evenly across the printing surface to give the best result.
8. It is recommended that trial pieces are tested before commencing actual project.
· Position a test piece of your selected material (paper, card, etc) on top of the make-ready mat
· Place foil shiny side up on top of your test piece.
· Using both hands, hold the handle of the press and bring it down firmly and with some pressure.
· Hold for only a short time and then bring the handle back up with one hand whilst holding the work in place.
9. Gently and slowly peel back the foil revealing your foiled print.
10. The Platen (7) can be modified, using the tool provided, in the adjustment apertures in the well underneath the platen.

Using your CraftDragon® ImPress
DO’S AND DON’TS to achieve the best printing results
DO
Ÿ Use the make-ready mat when hot foil stamping onto paper or card.
Ÿ Ensure that the make-ready mat is completely clean and free from debris as this can effect the resulting print.
Ÿ Work on a solid stable surface.
Ÿ Work in an area with a stable ambient temperature (any fluctuation in room temperature can affect results)
Ÿ Make sure the die is correctly positioned in the channel ie., pushed in as far as possible.
Ÿ Ensure that the die is orientated the correct way up before stamping.
Ÿ Test the die is heated thoroughly by doing a test print before proceeding to final work.
Ÿ Preferably use the centre channel of the Imp to insert a single die.
Ÿ Use a positioning mat (available from www.craftdragon.com) to easily align and hold your work in place.
Ÿ Use substrates that are high quality, preferably smooth, even and flat.
Ÿ The ImPress will print on some textured or ‘dry’ materials, but these should be thoroughly tested before using for actual projects.
Ÿ Test for:
1. Correct temperature - If the temperature is too high or low the final image may be affected.
2. Dwell time - If the dwell time is too long or short the resulting image may be affected.
(If bleeding occurs due to excess heat or dwell time the excess foil may be removed with a finishing brush.)
Ÿ Store dies correctly as follows
1. keep the dies stored in dry conditions to avoid degradation of the metal
2. shim between dies when storing to avoid scratching of the printing surface
3. if any pitting does occur the die surface can be lightly sanded with extremely fine sand paper (or flour paper) although this
may shorten the life of the die.
Ÿ Keep foils on the roll to avoid creasing or tearing as this will affect the resulting print.
Ÿ Store foils in dry conditions.
Ÿ Keep the CraftDragon® ImPress clean by following the relevant section in the instruction manual.
DON’T
Ÿ Bring Press handle too sharply as this can cause bounce and result in a double image or cause damage to the ImPress.
Ÿ Allow the arms of the press to spring back too quickly.
Ÿ Put undue strain on the arms of the press.
Ÿ Use a damaged or dirty make ready mat. If the make ready mat is damaged by inadvertently foiling or ink stamping onto it, further prints
may be affected.
Connection to the mains supply
WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED.
Mains Plug
This product is fitted with a standard UK mains outlet 3 pin plug complying with BS1363 and is designed to operate from a mains supply of

Ÿ Always replace the fuse with one of the same rating.
Ÿ Check that the voltage marked on the product corresponds with your supply voltage.
Ÿ If the plug is unsuitable for your mains socket or needs to be replaced, please note the following:
Ÿ DO NOT cut off the mains plug from this equipment. If the plug fitted is not suitable for the power points in your home/office or the cable is
too short to reach a power point, then obtain a proper safety approved extension lead /adaptor or consult with Craft Dragon Limited.
Ÿ Important: The wires in the mains lead must be connected as per the following diagram
Always ensure that the plug cord grip is fastened correctly
Mains lead
The mains lead should reach from the socket to the base unit without straining the connections.
Do not let the mains lead hang over the edge of a worktop where a child or pet could reach it.
Do not let the lead run across an open space e.g. between a low socket and table.
Do not let the lead run across a cooker or toaster or other hot area which might damage the cable.
Ÿ If the mains lead of this appliance is damaged do not use it. The lead may only be replaced by Craft Dragon Ltd or an agent of the company.
Ÿ With the thermostat control switch and power setting switches in the “OFF” Position; plug the CraftDragon® ImPress into the main power supply.
