Rules Summary
Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles. The rules
remain the same for each option.
The ball is served underhanded and diagonally to the
opponent’s cou without bouncing the ball o the cou.
The server must clear the “Non-Volley Zone
Non-Volley Zone (also known as the “kitchen or NVZ”): A
player cannot volley the ball within this zone. This zone is
located immediately around the net area
Points are scored only by the serving side and only when
the opponent commits a fault. (see “Faults”)
The serve must bounce before being hit by the receiver
The serving side continues serving until they fault. Volleys
can only be made aer the ball has bounced once
The first side to score 11 points and lead by at least 2
points wins. You must win by a 2-point lead
Players must announce the score prior to serving. Always
call the server's score first
Aer the ball is served, each side must hit one
ground-stroke (serving the ball to bounce on the cou)
before volleying the ball (hiing the ball before it bounces)

The Serving Process
At the sta of each new game, only one player in the first
serving team can serve and score points until a fault occurs.
Both members (if playing in doubles) of one team will serve
and fault before the ball is turned over to the opposing team.
The first serve of every service change must always sta in
the right-hand service square
Serving is always underhanded
Paddle contact with the ball must be below the server’s
waist
One foot must be behind the baseline and neither foot can
touch the baseline or cou until aer the ball is served
The serve is always hit diagonally to the crosscou and
must land in the opponent’s diagonal cou
Only one serve aempt is allowed unless the ball is hit into
the net and it lands on the other side in the proper service
cou (known as a “let”)
Both players on each team of a doubles game (or each
player on a singles game) serve(s) until a fault is commied
The server alternates their position aer every serve when
a point is scored
In a doubles team, when the first server loses the serve,
the paner moves to serve from the same side of the cou
that their paner last served from
Faults
A fault is any action that causes a violation in the game. A fault
by the receiving team results in the serving team earning a

out of bounds
ball does not clear the net
ball is volleyed within the non-volley zone
ball is volleyed before a bounce takes place on each side
ball is hit out of bounds

when a player makes contact of any so with the net
during play
ball bounces twice before being hit by the receiver
is in violation of a service rule
Vol l eys
Volleying means to hit the ball in the air without leing it
bounce first.
A legal volley occurs when:
The player is outside of the NVZ
The player must have both feet outside of the NVZ before
staing the volley
The player cannot touch the NVZ during or aer the volley
serve
Scoring
A team can only score a point when serving and continues
until a fault is made by their team
The server calls the score

keeps serving until a fault occurs, then the serve goes to
the opposing team. At the sta of each new game, the first
serving team is only allowed one fault (one person serves
instead of two)
