2. Important remarks
2.1 For your safety
Observe the following remarks before you commission
the device. Kistler accepts no responsibility for damages
that could arise from improper use of this product.
Prerequisite for the proper and safe use of the device
is that it be correctly stored, professionally installed and
commissioned, as well as operated as intended and
carefully maintained. Only persons who are familiar
with the installation, commissioning, operation and
maintenance of comparable devices and who possess the
qualicationsnecessaryforthegiventaskmayworkwith
the device.
Mounting a device on a vehicle invalidates the general
operating permit of the vehicle for use on public roads.
Observe the relevant legal requirements!
Do not look into the lamp; there is a risk of eye damage!
The lamp can become very hot; take this into account
when changing the lamp.
If the sensor is operated for a longer period of time, the
sensor head may become very hot, possibly resulting in
burn injuries. This applies in particular if the sensor is
operated in hot ambient conditions.
Do not use any defective or damaged devices.
Makenounauthorizedmodicationsandchangestothe
device and/or its accessories.
Improperinstallationofthedevicewillaectthesafetyof
the vehicle and the occupants! Install the device in such
a way that equipment necessary for the safety of the
vehicle is not impaired or disabled.

When connecting to the power supply, data acquisition
and evaluation systems and other usable components,
pay attention to the proper pin assignment and correct
operating voltage.
The sensor and/or sensor components could be damaged
if the sensor is operated for a long period of time in hot
ambientconditions.Switchothesensorifthevehicleis
not moved for a longer period of time.
Only use the original components included in the scope
of delivery.
Should it be necessary to use your own cables, always
pay attention to the correct pin assignment.
Kistler accepts no liability for damages caused by the use
of cables other than those supplied by Kistler.

3. Product description
3.1 General
Correvit S-Motion DTI sensors enable direct, slip-free
measurement of longitudinal and transverse speed as
well as slip angle in vehicle driving dynamics tests.
Due to their properties, the high-resolution variants
(S-Motion DTI HR) are particularly suitable for low speeds
(e.g. industrial trucks, parking tests).
Correvit S-Motion DTI sensors use the proven Correvit
technology. A new algorithm signicantly reduces the
signal noise. This algorithm and the high measurement
frequency of 500 Hz enable a minimal signal delay of 6
ms.
A built-in 5 Hz GPS receiver enables determination of
position data and time. The external magnetic antenna
allowsexibleandquickmountingonthevehicle.
Integrated accelerometers enable the determination
of additional measurands like longitudinal and trans-
verse acceleration of the vehicle. Integrated angular rate
sensors enable measurement of the pitch and roll angle
as well as the rotation around the vertical axis of the vehi-
cle.
Moreover, further signals such as leveled acceleration
or curve radius are already calculated inside the sensor.
A conversion of speed to any point of the vehicle, e.g.
center of gravity or rear axis is possible.
The output of these additional signals provides the option
to perform a large number of measurands required for
drivingdynamicsstandardtests.Thissimpliestheinstru-
mentation of the vehicle and minimizes application errors.
Correvit S-Motion DTI sensors produce unparalleled
accuracy on all standard testing surfaces, even under the
most challenging conditions. They feature high-quality
optical elements, the newest optoelectronical components
and state-of-the-art high-performance signal processing
based on DSP and FPGA’s. Speed and distance informa-
tion is updated at 500 Hz to track every highly dynamic
maneuver.

5. Mounting and connection
5.1 Mounting options
For optimum performance and accuracy, the mounting
distance between the bottom of the sensor (without splash
guard) and the road surface must be in the specied
range (see chapter 4.1).
Fig. 3: Possible mounting positions

Note the mounting direction of the S-Motion DTI sensor:
longitudinal/transverse variant.
In case of rain or snow, mount the sensor at the front of
the vehicle. This will prevent the measurement from being
impacted by splashing water or snow.
No special running-in procedure is necessary!

5.3.3 Bandwidth or cut-o frequency
The cut-o frequency of a system is dened as the fre-
quency where the amplitude of the original signal is
reduced by factor 1/sqrt(2) = 0.707.
The bandwidth is the range between upper and lower cut-
ofrequency.
Usually, we are dealing with low-pass lters where low
frequency or DC signals pass uninuenced but higher
frequencies are blocked. In that case the bandwidth is
identicaltothecut-ofrequency.
In case of a sensor - as for example Correvit S-350 - the
main limitation will be the processor cycle rate.
AS-350 sensor with a processor rate of250 Hz and l-
ter deactivated has a bandwidth of approximately 110 Hz.
Theuseofamovingaveragelterwillreducetheband-
width. As a rule of thumb the following formula can be
used:bandwidth=110Hz*4ms/ltertime
On the other hand, without ltering the resolution of the
signals will decrease. So it is only possible to detect mea-
sure signals whose frequency is below the cut-o fre-
quency and whose amplitude is higher than the sensor
resolution.
5.3.4 Filter setting and acquisition rate
If the acquisition rate is lower than the processor rate of
the sensor, the data acquisition system will only pick sin-
gle values from the sensor. To prevent loss of information
andaliasingeectthemovingaveragelterofthesensor
shouldbeactivated.Theltertimeshouldbeatleastthe
time between two acquisition samples. For example, if the
acquisitionrateis100Hztheltertimeshouldbeatleast
10 ms. The same applies if the CAN send rate of the sen-
sor is reduced.
